I'm contemplating beginning a new Facebook account. I've never had Facebook before and I was wondering if it's got any uses at all.

So it's a poll and a debate of sorts. Is a Facebook account worth starting?

Yeah...probably not.

As a good friend of mine used to put it...

In the end it's your choice...

I voted depends...if it would help you contact people you want to contact, then go for it, but if a.) a lot of your friends don't have Facebooks or b.) you can easily contact your friends in other ways, it's not worth it.

If you're like me and have a lot of friends who don't live close to you, are in different timezones, or are really busy all the time and hard to get ahold of, then Facebook is awesome. There are plenty of people that it's hard for me to communicate with except over Facebook or texting, and Facebook is easier. And not all of them have texting, either :/

If you have a bunch of friends who are the kind of people who post "that awkward moment when X" (where X isn't even awkward) every ten minutes, then you should definitely NOT get a Facebook, but you should probably get some new friends.

It depends really. If you use to keep in touch with people you know, then it can be useful. Then again, there are those people out there that just use it to friend everyone they can find which seems pretty redundant.

I had good use of it, some time ago, because I had lived in another country for 6 years and moved back to here, leaving all my friends. It doesn't work that well for me any more because we all have other friends, and I can't stay up till 2 in the morning every day. at the moment I see it more as a place I can find my friends telephone numbers and e-mails. But really it's all about how you communicate with the you have friends on facebook.

I like using FB to chat with my friends, this way I don't have to have any other messenger lagging my computer. I'm not really into all the photos uploading but sometimes it's fun to look at others' photos. :)

I think fb is a pretty cool thing to have. I like keeping in touch with my friends on it and I have a feeling it will be handy once we all go off to uni. Plus, the over dramatic, childish people are pretty hilarious. They always make me feel so much better about my life. ;)

It's both but it also depends on the person. Some people only have Facebook and don't do forums so you can't contact them here or anything so you can get them there.

On the other hand, Faceboook has groups and random pages for various things. I wouldn't be surprised if there were lots of MLP fan pages on there. I've found a lot of pages there.

Some companies use Facebook for announcements like they use Twitter but Twitter is more popular still.

Back when it was more watered down and restrictive (i.e. needing either a college email or someone in college to verify you) it was useful to keep a catalog of your friends.

But since they've opened it completely up, added trivial and downright annoying games/apps, and companies turned it into a new marketing/advertising weapon, Facebook is a huge source of problems and debauchery. It feels like it's reaching MySpace levels before MySpace ended up being sent to the mainstream graveyard.

If you have some family or friends that are far away from you, it can be a good way to keep in touch. Though, e-mail can be just as useful for that too. Its up to you man. If you get an account and later you feel that it wasn't worth it, then just delete it. :)

Facebook is ok in (grades).

I know a lot of people that only sit on facebook and never does anything active, and I think that's messed up.

But if you regularly visit the site to check up on how people are doing, or to see if anything interesting is happening the next weekend it's ok to have.

but it realy is no need to have it, you have all other kinds of methodes to do the exact same thing. :D

I sparsely log on to my Facebook account these days, but it still serves its fundamental purposes quite nicely. If there's friends of yours that you want to talk to but, for one reason or another, can't contact at all times of day or something, messaging them on Facebook is a good way to keep in touch.

However, if that's all you're going to use Facebook for I could just as easily recommend using E-Mail instead. Rather, if you're interested in the larger social aspects, such as seeing friends' photos and posting up your own it's a great tool for such things. Also, if there's someone you haven't talked to in a while it never hurts looking them up on Facebook and, if they have one, getting in touch with them again.

TL;DR:

If you make a Facebook account and decide you don't like it there's literally no penalty for not logging into it ever again, and you can even just disable your account if you want. I'd personally say go for it and give it a chance.

Don't do it. Their security sucks.

Plus, the only stories I ever seem to hear about Facebook are about how it ruins the lives of people with big mouths (big fingers?) or people with big-mouthed relatives and/or friends.

Hmm... Interesting...

I mean, I've got a couple of friends who I haven't chatted with for years, but I'm not even sure I wanna see them again. And yeah I saw how people were getting addicted to Tetris at my university :|

So at the moment, I'm not too inclined to have an account. Maybe that'll change later.

Facebook is good for staying in touch with people but I feel that it is overrated. I have a facebook account and I might go on it for 10 minutes every day. I hardly ever use it and I only have it to keep in touch with people/arrange days out. I would say that getting Facebook depends on whether or not you feel you want to keep in touch with certain people. :)

It really depends, some people spend way too much time on facebook, its so annoying how my friends think they have more of a social life than me just because they have 400 more friends that they don't even know. Anyway facebook isn't bad in moderation, like everything else.

I'd say don't even bother. I stopped logging into facebook about a year ago. I didn't make a decision to stop using it or anything else like that. I just sort of forgot about it. Most of the things that people sent me on Facebook were completely useless status updates and the occasional message that should have been just sent via email. I don't even miss it a little bit.

I don't know maybe, the only reason I have a facebook is to be able to sign in to other webpages withouth having to actually signing up in said pages. That said the only time I checked facebook wa the same day I created an account there.
