Why hate Mary Sues?

Don't rag on people for them unless they're ignorant and refuse to take advice on how to make them better

And do tell me which Mary Sues are likable because they make horrible plot devices. Don't being up Superman, by definition, a Mary Sue is someone with no flaws(or adorable flaws) who never faces any challenges and if they do, resolve them in seconds

No offense but I really dislike any character thats Mary Sue. Its like they're not even normal because they have no slight imperfections 'bout them.

@@DokiLoki,

The authors are also typically complete and utter hacks. Sadly, this is an actual quote

Imperfections builds character, Mary Sues have too many perfections so they're boring to play as. Mary Sues don't exist in real life, so they would they in a roleplay? I mean look at Twilight Sparkle, her flaws are easily noticed in the episode called Lesson Zero were she basically goes insane. Those are her flaws at work. Flaws make a character interesting.

Even a Mary Sue can fill a role in a story

I agree because some important ponies are Mary sues. Am I the only one that thinks Twilight is a Mary sue? I mean, she is a princess, her brother is married to a princess, and she is Celestia's star pupil.

It all depends on how the story is crafted. Often, Mary Sues are OCs that are rushed in the making.

Yeah, in some ways she has the writings of a Mary Sue with just how much stuff revolves around her character, her talent, and so on. But she has a good personality that's possible to relate to and her own shortcomings, so despite her character being loaded she works just fine.

Yeah...but she gets her ass handed to her power wise, she's outsmarted, and she's got issues with management. If she were a Mary Sue, she would have no flaws

Twilight is almost certainly a Mary Sue, albeit not for those reasons. She's a character created largely by the show's creator. The difference in this case is she was meant from the start to be part of the show rather than a character a fan created who subsequently put in a huge interaction with them or otherwise blew their likely importance in history out of proportion. And, Twilight is not perfect. She was written with plenty of flaws to make her an interesting and entertaining character.

They can be really awful.

But sometimes it's just a young person that's just wanting to have fun. They don't really care about the intricacies of making complex characters. People that actually care, but then get pissy when people give them negative feedback are insufferable. But for the young kids that are just trying to enjoy themselves? Let them have their fun. By harassing and putting them down, you might actually snub out a new and fragile flicker of creative passion.

Yes and no. Twilight us a Mary Sue insofar as a lot of the personality of the creator probably went into her, but she was professional enough not to make her perfect.

There is seriously nothing wrong with a author in disguise, it helps establish a better connection between the writer and their character as well as the way they perceive things in the story/RP.

Now unrealistically rising through the ranks with little effort and god-like powers is another story.

When they're stupidly overpowered, have a power that doesn't fit with the universe they're a part of, and/or forced into canon by having a connection with canon characters, they are absolute crap. Even worse, when you tell the owners those are wrong, and they either flip shit or defend their OC.

I've ran into so many over the years, I ended up making quite possibly the most overpowered character ever, just to deal with these things when I was RPing years ago.

Being a self insert doesn't automatically make a character a Mary Sue.

Where their personality originated doesn't matter as long as they're a well executed character.

Twilight isn't a mary sue, and she's far from perfect. The fact that everyone in the show likes her is moot, since everyone in the show likes everyone else as well. And if Twilight were perfect, she wouldn't need the other five, to accomplish anything, or help in any regards.

One of the many problems with Mary Sues is that they don't even exist in real life. No one is perfect, therefore no characters should be perfect.

"Perfect" however is relative.

I am one of the MANY people who have taken Mary Sue litmus tests using MYSELF as the subject, and come out as a "Mary Sue".

Either I don't exist, or people's standards on what a Sue is can very VERY subjective. I'm voting for the latter.
