I have not had a Windows XP computer for years.  Personally, I have Windows 7 (Windows 8 looks atrocious and impossible to learn).

On the other hand, my HS is entirely XP computers.  When they bought new computers with Win7 preinstalled a couple of years back, THEY INSTALLED XP ON ALL OF THEM!  What the heck were they thinking?!?!

Incoming unpopular opinion, brace yourself;

I find Windows 8 to be absolutely perfect. I don't even have a touchscreen, but I find the interface to be quite alright. It's more stable than Windows 7 or Vista and it's had support for any app I've really had a reason to run. It's been quite good for gaming, and I've run several dozen different games on it with no issues at all. People complain about Windows 8 but I don't think it's really that different from Windows 7, in fact, it's better for me, because I find it's search function very useful.

I like how in Windows 8, you can search for things by category, in either Apps, Settings, or Files. It's much more convenient than having to look through everything that shares the title.

Everybody picks on Windows 8, when it's actually a really robust operating system. Unlike Windows 7 and XP, which I've used both of, it's never crashed. Not once.

Most of the things people complain about aren't even mandatory features and can actually be disabled, as I've chosen to do.

I can't do anything. I have a computer which is apparently too old to install the next version of Windows, and I haven't the money to buy a new desktop.

It's all very well people saying smugly, "Well, Windows XP is totally outdated, should have been binned ages ago" when they're safe in the knowledge that they can either ask their parents to get them a new laptop/desktop or draw on their stuffed bank account and do likewise. But not everyone is so fortunate.

I'd download something that would act as a replacement but I don't know how to do it. :( I use Firefox for internet, and I don't even know if there's anything there to help.

People still run on XP? o.O

I've been using Windows 7 for years, and haven't seen even the slightest bit of a reason to look back.

I haven't run XP in years. I run Win 7 64 Ultimate on my PC and Ubuntu on my netbook.

So, I dont' really care if they stop support for it.

Besides, it's not like come April 8th, you won't be able to use your PC that has XP on it. You just won't be that well protected against security threats and the like.

Heck I have a server up in the attic that still runs on XP. Running on Service pack 2 I think.

30% of computers connected to the Internet actually.

Well, hate to say it.But they're gonna have to upgrade, that is if they don't want viruses.

As come April 8th. you'll be more susceptible to virus attacks and other security things, because there won't be any support to combat said viruses. And new programs (video games included) coming out won't be supported by Windows XP either.

I don't bother playing games on computers, I use the Xbox for that. I'll probably stay with XP for now.

Oh god, I haven't used XP in years. I've used Vista, 7, and now Windows 8/8.1 I gotta say, I prefer 7 over 8, though just slightly. I like the faster boot up, the new UI doesn't bother me in the slightest. I guess I'll say the compatibility was nice and Windows Aero was cool in Windows 7.

This has probably been said to you, but to keep it simple: The main vulnerabilities are to do with internet usage. As usual, I doubt anyone can reach across the internet and put a keylogger in your computer while it's just sitting there. But, navigating through websites, especially on a less-secure browser, could trigger any number of unwanted activities.

That said, some companies with software limitations are keeping Windows XP for some systems, but keeping them on an isolated network so that they likely can't be infected. Whether you should be worried depends on your internet use. But given that you're on this forum, I'd recommend you reconsider; who knows, maybe on April 8th, somebody could embed a virus in their forum signature image...

Doesn't matter if I have faith in them or not really, it's the OS I pretty much will always go with for my main rig. I can't stand Linux, and OS X is only something I run on my laptops. I've been using Windows since 3.1

LOL!! I remember windows 3.1! I used to use my aunt's computer at my grandparents when I was like 5 (1994) to use the paint program. I actually thought it was the BEST THING EVER, sadly. Then I would print it in black and white on a Dot Matrix printer with the continuous paper with the sides with holes that you had to tear off. (It printed HORRIBLE)

Then when I was like 10 my cousins had a crappy old laptop with it that they had some cool old games on.

Wow I feel old now

^ Agreed, you might not think it'd be worth trouble now... but... just wait and see if you must.

It almost seems as you think I want to keep it. I don't really, I just have to. I don't have the money to buy a new computer right now.

I gotta ask, but what are your specs? Unless you're running some old Pentium 4 from pre-XP days, almost any XP based machine should be able to run 7. My little mini 10v netbook can run 7 Ultimate, and that thing is not speedy at all.

7 and 8 can be acquired really cheap if you are in college, or know someone in college that would help you out. I've even got spare copies sitting around I'd be willing to sell for cheap.

You don't need a computer to change windows XP, Linux is free and works out fairly well*.

To answer this shortly, it can only run XP, or Vista, very poorly, I may add.

It's a Dell Inspiron 6400

It's running on a Centrino Duo

It has 2GB of RAM

It's fairly old also, and works very slowly.

Oh man, I'm preparing to blare Beethoven's 9th on April 8th... I have nothing against XP, but its older than internet explorer 6 and it's really about time we finally let the poor thing retire. Windows 8 is a mess, but it can be tamed with the right tools like a third party application menu. I haven't ever had to look at the crappy touch screen interface since my first boot.

I guess this is a good time to push Linux as well... Give it a shot, you might as well. The tablet interface will probably be less intuitive to you than anything any Linux distro will throw your way.

Oh man, I used to have one of those 6400's but it got killed in a lightning storm, wish I still had that thing. Loved the placement of the media buttons. I have a feeling 7 would run okay on it, it does run smoother than Vista, but it might not be worth it to you just to test the water. If you haven't already that is.
