Opinions of pop music?

I think music to a downward turn once synths became accessible to everyone, instead of being incredibly expensive (e.g. the original synth, the Moog).

I don't know if I agree with that. Thanks to synths being cheaper and more accessible, we had artists like Gary Numan, Depeche Mode, Soft Cell, Ah-Ha, Eurythmics, The Human League, Ultravox, and countless of other projects.

Not to mention plenty of "non-mainstream" modern bands and artists that use synths.

If you mean Pop as in back in the days, I love that music.

But modern pop, or hip-hop, is very lame. All modern pop nearly has the same style and it's never anything new.

Depends on the decade.

60s/70s pop? YES. The Beach Boys, The Mamas and The Papas, Elton John, The Beatles (I consider them pop), The Miracles (techinacally RnB, but closer to pop), and so much more. Pop after that, unless we're talkin' Michael Jackson, is much less good. I think music to a downward turn once synths became accessible to everyone, instead of being incredibly expensive (e.g. the original synth, the Moog).

I would so 100% agree with this post, except for Michael Jackson. I will never understand the love for Michael Jackson (which seemed to magically pop up in spades the day he died [even though I knew his music was revered before the point, everybody seemed to forget about his music and hate him, but become huge fans the day he died. -_-]), and when I hear his music it just sounds like the rest of the cringeworthy pop from the 80s.

Even though some of the songs made little sense, They were still beautiful, Just listen to the intro of "Let's Go To San Francisco" by The Flower Pot Men, It's hauntingly beautiful.

Omg I found it xD

This is by far one of the worst thing in this universe.

Music is supposed to be an art. And to be an art, it must be artistic, share emotions, ideas, opinions. But now... repetitive sound made by a program and random lyrics, talking about sex, ALL THE TIME.

And not only that: What I like in music is actually THE music. I like all the emotions shown and shared in these sounds, and it's the only time I can feel my emtions, because they are buried far away in me.

But Pop... feels depressive. Seriously, pop music ruined my whole entire life, anytime I would hear it, I would feel depressive. And when we were cleaning the house, my mother used to put loud pop music. And now, everytime I clean the house, I become sick.. Pop music shares no idea, no emotions, just plain nothing.

Music is now a product, ever since pop music started being crap, 2000's. Since it is plain simple, it is available and enjoyable with people with a musical intelligence not really developped. So well, the music critics being some of them, everything they enjoyed, they said it was pop, and everything they disliked because it was too complex, they putted it prog rock category, then belittling this genre like it was pest.

In a way, it's not so "bad", because prog rock now regroup hundred of different and wonderful styles, easily available. But for pop...

They make a repetitive sound medley, put awful lyrics and then play it again and again on the radio, pulling it down your throat until it get stuck in your head, and you "like" it. It's the case for most of them. And for a bonus, videoclips. Nude girls bring a lot of people right?

Sadly, Prog Rock never got the recognition they deserve, the style only lasted 10 years until other styles start belittling it, getting simpler all the time, until it became a product, for money.

One of my favorite group, Gentle Giant, said: "We don't care if we don't make money, if we are not popular, we just want to make music." Yet, they disbanded in 1980. In 10 years, they wrote simply amazing songs, produced a bunch of concept album. But their songs are still not forgotten by all the fans. Do you remember the Black Eyed Peas? Not until you readed this, probably.

Go explore the vast universe of the music, stop being manipulated by these "products", explore, you might find incredible stuff.

I wrote this when I was drunk, a few months ago. :P

Thank you.

The one common element in pop that bugs the crap out of me: It's all about the lyrics. I don't particularly care for lyrics in most songs. I listen for the melodies, the beats and the instruments. Hell, I even like vocals in general...but lyrics? I can live without lyrics in all of the music I've ever listened to.

The reason I don't like pop as much is they don't particularly have much besides the lyrics. They've got the background music but that's all it really is. There's nothing special about the guitar or electronic sounds in them. It's not even about them being repetitive, as that's common in a lot of music, it just doesn't really stand out at all.

But of course, like most other music, I still find stuff I like in it. Things I like because they do have lyrics I like or a singer I enjoy listening to. Hell, my whole thing about the "background music" isn't even a rule, just a pattern I've witnessed so there's plenty of songs that don't have that.

I guess my only REAL issue with pop is that it can't really be put into any other genre...which is why it's in pop. That's how I've defined pop for a long time, even if the technical definition is "popular".

I concur but would like to say that I dislike most pop for the reason that most of it is made in the pursuit of fortune.  A lot of pop music is made not for the love of the music itself, but the thought of the monetary gain that it may profit.  I for one do not wish to support music that was made for such a purpose.  I believe music should come from the heart.  There are some pop artists that do make music for the sake of it, and I support them and listen to them alone.

After the King of pop died, so does pop music. I hate modern pop music, all the lyrics is written poorly and most vocals sounded so fake.

I bet this thread already exists, but I couldn't find it.

I'm not too big into music, but I always hear pop music wherever I go.  I hate pop music and I don't see how anyone could like it.  My theory is that people don't care about the music as much as they do about what's in it.  Not only do I mean people (especially Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry), but also things in the videos.  I just watched parts of the music video for that Happy song and I saw Despicable Me minions in it.  All of the songs sound the same and it doesn't seem like there's as much talent in them as there is in other genres.

Anyways, do you like pop music?  Why/why not?

I feel like all the songs seem to repeat themselves. They either talk about love or thrive for of bubbly sounding beats. I’m okay with early 2000s stuff, but nowadays it’s like anyone can make a song and put it on the radio.

Pop music is fine/ok! But I am going to say one thing about you autotune people (Cher), and melodyne people (Rhianna): Why you destroy your singing voice using filters? I will never accept that! Bring back the real singers from the 80s.
