Season 3 Premiere Prediction
Espelancer replied to MatrixChicken's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
Considering the premiere episodes of both season one and two involved the Elements of Harmony, I think that the third season will begin on the same premise. Perhaps some villain tries to steal the power of the Elements themselves, and the Mane 6 by themselves cannot stop said villain. However, they soon discover that by living out their element in their daily lives, they pass their element off to everypony around them. Collectively, many ponies are able to band together, amplifying the power of each Element exponentially and overcoming energy stolen from the original Elements. Or maybe it will just be another CMC episode. Who knows? -

gaming Why do People Insist on Purchasing New Consoles from Japan?
Espelancer replied to Otter's topic in Media Discussion
While there is no longer any reason to import consoles or handheld systems due to the video game industry effectively doing away with region codes (something that the film industry needs to let go on DVD's), there are plenty of reasons to import games from Japan (or elsewhere). Personally, I am studying Japanese, so playing Japanese games is actually a very effective way of learning because not only am I reading Japanese text -- in most modern games I am also listening to a considerable amount of voice acted segments while reading along. There are also plenty of great games that come out overseas that never reach US shores, and many which you really don't need to understand Japanese to play and enjoy. You can play Valkyria Chronicles 3 without knowing a spit of Japanese and have fun doing it since the gameplay is easy to master (yet addictingly fun and challenging) and there are plenty of visuals to give you a pretty good idea of what is going on in the story (although you will be missing all of the details of the story if you don't know Japanese). There are even some games that are released in Europe that haven't been released in America. The Tales of Eternia PSP port is one such example, which is why I have imported the British version of the game. Even just being able to play a game several months early is a valid enough reason. The video game industry is no longer tied to region codes because region codes are just wrong and are not conducive to the free market as a whole. If you are a company selling another game, do you really care where the purchaser lives? In fact, if said game gets localized, that same person may even buy the localized version, effectively buying the same game twice. Even if you don't agree with any of these above reasons, every consumer has the right to spend their money how they choose, whether it is on overseas imports or domestic products, and nobody has the right to tell them otherwise. -
Psychological Analyses Entry Two: Applejack
Espelancer replied to Queen Cassie's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
I find it highly difficult to believe Applejack would foster any ill feelings towards either one of her parents, or really anyone for that matter. Applejack isn't really the type to hold grudges for very long. She may have had her differences with Rarity during the sleepover episode, and she was extremely upset with Apple Bloom in Ponyville Confidential, but she was able to accept her differences with Rarity and was eventually forgiving for her little sister. It seems that one of her parents comes from the Orange family, so would have been born into a significant amount of wealth; it is quite possible that the Orange family is in the upper echelons of a large corporation. These executive types tend to live for their work, and also travel frequently on business trips. Perhaps the Orange spouse met the Apple spouse on a business trip to Ponyville, they became involved romantically, and eventually eloped and had 3 foals. I would further speculate that given traditional familial roles, Applejack's father was the Orange, so Applejack's mother would possibly move in with her new husband and travel with him whenever possible, perhaps even working together as partners. (Of course, in a world where males are outnumbered by females 10 to 1, perhaps this should be reversed.) Realizing that life on the road is not a conducive environment to raise children in, Applejack's mother sent Big Macintosh, Applejack, and later Apple Bloom to live on the farm with Granny Smith, and they would later help in running the Apple side of the business on the farm. I think that Applejack and her siblings love their parents very much, and at the very least their mother loves them back, however it is clear that their parents have other priorities that come before their children, such as expanding their business. This happens in the real world as well -- some parents believe that being a good parent means advancing their careers in order to be a better caretaker, and somewhere along the way their career becomes the number one priority. If this is the case, the Apple siblings are actually quite fortunate that they were able to live with someone who can give them the time and dedication they needed in order to grow up and lead healthy lives, rather than being forced to move from place to place with parents that could not make the time for them.- 29 replies

Psychological Analyses Entry One: Fluttershy
Espelancer replied to Queen Cassie's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
I think that Fluttershy is afraid to express how she truly feels, mostly out of fear of being judged by others. The result is that she is constantly repressing her own emotions. However, Fluttershy often reaches a breaking point and we see her built up emotions completely burst out, whether positively or negatively. This is especially true in things that she is most passionate about. When she does finally snap, she becomes completely fixated on one thing, and when she is showing negative emotion, tends to take things entirely too far. Some examples: In the first episode, Fluttershy is afraid to introduce herself to Twilight, however she becomes extremely excited when she has the opportunity to meet a talking baby dragon. She becomes so excited, in fact, that she completely forgets that Twilight is somepony she does not know and it allows them to become friends. In Sonic Rainboom, when Fluttershy tries to meet Rainbow Dash's expectations to cheer her on, her performance is rather meek. It's not that she doesn't want to support Rainbow Dash; I think she is afraid of what her friends (or even worse, bystanders) would think if she stood out as being too excited. However, when Rainbow Dash finally does succeed in performing her Sonic Rainboom, the joy she feels for her friend's accomplishment overcomes her shyness, and Fluttershy's cheers resonate throughout Cloudsdale Coliseum. She becomes so excited for RD, in fact, that she completely forgets that Rarity is falling to her death. At the gala, we see Fluttershy's frustration build up to a breaking point, as you mentioned. Obviously, caring for animals is her purpose in life, and the one thing that she is the most passionate about, so failing that would probably be the hardest thing for Fluttershy to deal with. I think Fluttershy has come to accept her shortcomings in her early life over time, as it takes an incredible amount of inner strength to maintain a kind and considerate attitude towards others (most of the time), even when she is being given a hard time, so it is no wonder that when she fails to woo the animals in the garden -- something that she is supposed to be good at -- her frustration builds and she becomes, well, a monster. I think her tough childhood caused her to repress her emotions whenever possible, but I think her snapping is the result of pent up feelings from the last instance that she expressed herself moreso than a life of pent up emotion -- she operates on a cycle so to speak.Obviously we have the assertiveness training given by Iron Will in season 2, where we see Fluttershy at her worst. We know from Sonic Rainboom that she has always wanted to be more assertive, and I think that is one of the reasons why she looks up to Rainbow Dash as one of her closest friends. In this instance, we see Fluttershy seeking outside help to deal with problems in her personal life, and as always, she takes things much too far. At first, she is excited that she is able to stand up to the gardener when he is overwatering her flowers. This excitement translates into confidence, and since she is so completely fixated on her assertive training, she thinks of nothing else. Her assertiveness soon turns into downright aggressiveness, and finally culminates in Fluttershy sending Rarity and Pinkie Pie crying. I don't think that she really meant what she said at all, but I think there is more to it than just a life of pent up anger. I think that it has been a long time since Fluttershy's emotions truly came out, and with the help of Iron Will, they came out in the most negative way possible. In Hurricane Fluttershy, we again see how fixated Fluttershy becomes when she finally does let loose. The entire episode, she was afraid of being judged by other ponies, but since Rainbow Dash is her best friend, she tries her hardest anyways. Once again, we see Fluttershy trying to tackle a personal problem head-on, and once again there are no other ponies involved in helping her face her fears. Although she comes up short in her training, she finds the inner courage to help out on the day that matters. Even though she is terrified of what the other ponies might think of her flying ability, she completely forgets about all of that and becomes completely fixated on trying her best, whether it is for Rainbow Dash who believes in her or for herself. She becomes so fixated, in fact, that she forgets to stop when the hurricane is all over.- 22 replies

Alys Brangwin from Phantasy Star IV, of course. She has such a profound impact on the life of the main protagonist Chaz from even before the game, taking in a young orphan who would survive by stealing and living on the streets and teaching him how to make an honest living being a hunter. She was much more than a mentor -- she was also a friend, a parental figure, and a role model. (Big spoiler in tag below) I don't think any other video game protagonist can stack up to Alys.

I think my Japanese handwriting actually might BE better than my native handwriting.....

Espelancer means "to lay a path of hope", as mentioned in the ending of The Legend of Heroes: A Tear of Vermilion. I think the sword Espelancer was mistranslated from "Esperanza", which means "hope"in Latin, but I actually like "Espelancer" a lot better. (in the Japanese version it is エスペランサー, or Esuperansaa). I do not recommend playing that game in English, though. The Gagharv trilogy got the worst translation I have ever seen in a video game. You can't go 10 minutes without running out of fingers to count all of the awkward translation, and even worse, all of the English spelling and grammatical mistakes. It was like it was translated and edited by third graders. It's sad, because the Japanese version has some of the most beautifully written dialogue I've ever understood half of, and is a treasure chest of the Japanese language. However, that should not deter anyone from playing Trails in the Sky. XSeed did an excellent job localizing the first chapter. Where was I? So, yeah, that is why I chose Espelancer as my username. Whew.

MLP Series Finale - How will it all end?

You guys use your hands to write?

This is for those of you who know a little Japanese: 弟は何歳ですか。 うるさい! How old is your little brother? Annoying! 靴は何歳ですか。 臭い! How old are your shoes? Smelly! 奥さんは何歳ですか。 面倒くさい! How old is your wife? A pain in the ass! Now, here's an explanation of these jokes. When asking how old someone or something is, you use the interrogative 何歳 (Nan-sai, or what age). A person would typically respond something like 二十五歳 (Ni-Juu-Go-Sai, or 25 years old), since -Sai is the counter for age. There are, however, a handful of Japanese adjectives that also end in -sai, such as うるさい (urusai, or annoying or loud), くさい (kusai, or smelly), めんどうくさい (Mendoukusai, or pain in the ass), てんさい (Tensai, or genius), and the list goes on and on. Basically the idea here is to ask how old something is, and they respond 知らない (Shiranai, or I don't know), and you deliver a -Sai adjective as the punchline. And that is how Equestria was made. Next time I will have to tell you about puns from overseas, it's a gem!

Which pony least lives up to her element?
Espelancer replied to Ezynell's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
Definitely Rarity, although I've always thought that Applejack's element should have been Loyalty and that Rainbow Dash should have been Honesty. Rainbow Dash is honest to the point of being completely tactless at times. Applejack's only disloyal moment was in The Last Roundup, and even then she wanted to return. In fact, that entire episode was about her trying to cover up the truth about her performance at the rodeo. -
I always enjoyed some of the extra stuff thrown into Working Designs games back in the day, although I guess they weren't all that "hidden". Magic Knight Rayearth (Saturn) Alundra (PlayStation) and Lunar: Eternal Blue (Sega CD and Playstation) Working Designs games were full of stuff like that just randomly thrown into the dialogue.

Confess something to another forum member!
Espelancer replied to Crystal Sparkle's topic in Forum Games
I had the biggest crush on Clarissa Darling as a kid, in fact Clarissa Explains It All was my favorite television show at the time. I never missed a new episode. Even now, the show is still enjoyable and the problems that Clarissa faces are sill relevant to today. Even though it was a Nickelodeon sitcom whose target audience was adolescent girls, it was extremely well crafted and enjoyed high ratings and recieved an Emmy nomination as well as a few Young Artist awards and nominations. It pushed a lot of boundaries, too, and was littered with pop culture references and explored more mature themes that other shows would normally not even address. This is probably why I was willing to give My Little Pony a try when I first heard about it after returning home from deployment. -
This was a game on the PC, and it was great. It was basically an adventure game similar to Myst or Escape from Monkey Island, and the plot and setting felt like it was film noir. A reboot of this franchise would be the best thing ever. I'm not talking about a new Phantasy Star Online or Universe game here, or the current portable renditions of them. I'm talking about a return to the original plotline of the Phantasy Star series, either as an enhanced port or a sequel/prequel. I think this would work well on a portable console such as the PSP, Vita, or 3DS. (The first two games of the series actually did get enhanced remakes earlier in the PSP's life, but of course those never reached America.) OK, so this is a newer game, but it needs to come to America, like, right now. It is the most ambitious game Namco Tales Studio has ever done, and is certainly the most beautiful.

I will try to be as vague as possible to avoid any major spoilers from Xenogears and Tales of Vesperia. Fei Fong Wong from Xenogears is probably the most complex character I have ever seen in a video game. Throughout the entire game he is constantly at conflict with himself and his own personal desires and apprehensions, while at the same time being unwillingly swept up in a much larger struggle that shakes the entire foundations of the world. How is that for being vague enough without giving away any spoilers? Yuri Lowell from Tales of Vesperia is one of the most interesting protagonists I have seen in a long time, and it is mostly because of the stark contrasts between him and his closest friend, Flynn. Most games would have you playing Flynn -- a well respected knight of unshakable integrity, who serves his country to protect its citizens and change his country for the better, preferably without any bloodshed and within the means of the law. Instead, you play as Yuri, who has the exact same ideals as Flynn, but pursues those ideals in a completely different manner. He has no problems circumventing the law in order to protect the less-priveleged -- like a Robin Hood so to speak. He would even bloody his own hands to punish the corrupt politicians he sees as destroying his country when the law fails to make them answer for their crimes. This dynamic between Flynn and Yuri causes them to clash from time to time, yet they each rely on the other to do what they cannot.
