Does anyone else think G3 is underrated?

For staters it was just plain god awful. Second it was playing off every single gender stereotypes. The show had no conflict and it showed that as long as you dont do anything everything will resolve itself. In the end it just seemed like it went for that every little girl is a princess and if your cute your problemsbwill be solved no matter what. Also they were horrid animations. I actually stopped letting my cousin watch them and got her hooked on old seasme street and thundercats. Both of which my aunt was more than happy about.

Actually, I kinda agree. It was made for little girls. In the same way Michael Bay's Transformers movies are considered garbage but people keep watching them, we can't criticize little girls for watching something meant to appeal to them.

Why can't we?

I mean, Friendship is Magic was meant for little girls, but critics have been kind to it.

Okay, I'm sorry for double posting, but the edit function refuses to cooperate.

Stancet, I misread your post. Sorry.

Don't get me wrong, we can criticize it but we have to criticize it from a little girl's point of view. If a boy actually sat through it and criticized it for being girly, well, he was nobody to blame but himself. But do we believe G3 is being a bad influence on our children? Not since the last time I heard.

But how do we truly measure how good it is? The only sure way in my opinion is how much care and/or effort was put into it. And it would seem apparent there was less effort in G3 than in G4, so in the most practical sense G3 is a pretty bad installment to the franchise.

With MLP Friendship is magic, I can watch. It's not for little girls who think they can be a pony. ( The Pink is mad at G3.  :okiedokielokie: )

G3 always had a horrid plot, bad animation, and waaaaaay to much girly-girl stuff. G4 is best!!

Actually, it doesn't appeal to little girls, it panders to them. Too many bright colors, cardboard characters, awful singing.

But we humans want to be pandered to. We want people telling us we are always right. We want everything to go our way. And we are suckers for whatever junk can pander to our desires (and I'm definitely no exception to the rule). But pandering to little girls can't be the worst kind in the world. And either way, G3 is done and over, and Michael Bay's reign of terror still continues.  :eww:

Of course; G3 is the second best toyline! (G1 is the best  ;) )

While the G3 toys are the generation that started the whole “symbols on only one side” thing, they're still very good and without a doubt better than then the horrid G4 toys (in my opinion). They look like ponies, which is a good thing; with their nostrils, good proportions, and etc. They're painted very well and they have such a well variety of flank emblems; again, better then G4. They also have a good variety of ideas for other G3 waves (Jewel ponies, scented ponies, etc) without getting too gimmicky.

Now, if you're talking about the marketing TV show that supports the toys, then here's my opinion on that. The show qualities itself are pretty good, like the animation, pony styles (I love their hair!), and voices (most of the voices). The problem is that most of the plots are safe; now, while I say "safe", that doesn't mean that it won't be entertaining for others. Most of the episodes are fun and enjoyable, like "Come back Lilly Lightly" and "A very Minty Christmas". Those two episodes that I listed aren't girly at all, and while I'm on topic, most of the episodes aren't as girly as some of you FIM obsessed Bronies make it out to be.

The thing is that, during G3, MLP's focus was not the shows and movies. The shows and movies were simply an afterthought to the toys - an extension to the merchandise usually, not even a free-standing product. For example, you'd buy a Sparkleworks plushie and it would come with some random videotape. It wasn't something that was really taken seriously. Therefore, I judge G3 like 80% on the toys and 20% on the show.

I think G3 toys are much cooler than G4 toys. G3 toys had many different poses for the figures and didn't rely on using the same mold for every singly pony. They also seemed to have more intricate cutie marks, body designs, eyes, and facial expressions. Plus, there were so many different characters to pick from! They repeated a few popular ponies (like Pinkie Pie, Minty, Toola Loolra etc), but that was rare. They constantly came out with new characters and each had cool little biographies on the back of the box. My sister and I loved those toys so much when we were younger, and I still collect them. I collect G4 too - I think they're cute, but their designs seem to be weaker than G3.

And as far as the shows? Keep in mind they were targeting very, very young girls aged approximately 2-10. I agree that they could have been less stereotypical in their character portrayals, but I'm not surprised that they didn't... they were obviously trying to sell to a different kind of girl than they try to sell to now. The demographic for FiM is still girls, but it's now aimed at a wider age range of girls, evident by the more complex nature of the show. And once again, it almost seems pointless to compare the shows since the shows were not the priority of G3 (I can't stress this enough!).

It was just a different type of show because of that. I don't think "different from FiM" necessarily means "worse than FiM."  I enjoyed G3 for what it was, and I still can watch it and smile today when I'm in the mood for it. G3 is light, fluffy, super girly... It has a different feel, but it's not bad.

Watching G3 is like eating a bag of cotton candy, and watching G4 is like eating a robust breakfast. A robust breakfast is healthier, and given the choice, I will usually eat the robust breakfast... but sometimes I just want to shove cotton candy in my face, you know? :P

I'm really sorry, and this'll probably offend you but...

G3 and G3.5 are abominations. The characters have no depth. PINKIE IS CALM FOR CELESTIAS SAKE! And it's all about boys. Ugh. Because all that matters in life is who you have crushes on, right? G3.5's art style is horrible, but G3's is repulsive.

G1 is still very bad, but compared to those two is amazing.

Sorry, that's just my opinion - and just because I dislike them doesn't mean you have to too!

I can't really judge the plot and characters because I haven't seen it. I will say though that the animation from what I've seen in 3.5 looks objectively bad.

No, I think it's fairly rated. Unlike G1 which has merit and can still be mined for great ideas for G4 ... G3 is seen for what it is. Same with G3.5 which gets the most criticism.

  • 1 month later...

Hey everyone, does anyone else think that G3 of MLP is way too underrated? I mean, what's so bad about in for starters?

Well, it's overly girly, unlike FiM. I can't watch it all. I tried to, but I just can't! Boring, girly, just about it! There are barely any non-girly characters. The only good thing about it is all the different characters there are. Otherwise, it's horrid.

I don't really like any of the pre-FiM generations mainly because of the art style. I didn't even really like MLP when I was a kid.

The quasi-anime look of FiM is one of the main reasons it appeals to me. I feel that FiM is more the spiritual successor to Sailor Moon (and maybe even Seinfeld to a certain extent) than the previous MLP cartoons.

While I do think that there are lots of bronies who judge it simply because it isn't FiM, or because it's past gen(which I think is unfair), at the same time I think a lot of the criticism is somewhat justified

First we must make the distinction between G3 and G3.5. G3.5 is unrepentant garbage, a rushed cash grab w/ half assed production, sub par voice acting, overly simplified dialogue and amateur animation compounded by flawed tastes in design & style.

Now G3 proper is a bit different. For it's time, it had good animation, competent voice actors who did try with their characters, a descent music score and diversity among it's cast.

I do enjoy watching G3, but I don't look for the same things there that I do in G4. The two are completely different. G3 is just a fun, chill ride, entertaining that kiddish, imaginative fantasy part of my brain that still thinks anything is possible.

Underrated? Probably. Overhated? Most definitely.

Just chillax dudes. Don't be so harsh.

The first thing I look for in any cartoon is plot and writing. If those don't hold my interest, it doesn't stand much chance with me.

G3 and 3.5's writing was horrible. The stories came across like they were aimed at an audience even younger than the one they were targeting. The acting and animation were adequate, but the plotlines had no depth to them at all.

In short, I think the best part of G3 and 3.5 were that they paved the way for FiM.

I like G3 personally! It's not the same as FiM bit that doesn't mean it's not good for what it is... It's a cute, fun show for the kid in all of us... It just depends on whether you let the kid watch it; or you inner critic... Just my two bits!

All I can tell you is that my inner child hated this kind of stuff, he needed some form of violence to find something appealing, heck when I was younger I remember specifically preferring swords to guns. So no for me no matter what way I look at it G3 in my eyes will always be a steaming pile of horses**t(pun intended).
