Brony Research Study

SCS

Recommended Posts

Sent an email just a moment ago; hopefully I'll be able to participate! We'll see if they're still accepting participants, particularly for phone interviews.

Are there regional Bronycons?

There are MLP conventions all over the place... 'Bronycon' is the largest of these and it is in Baltimore, Maryland for the past two years and will stay there for the foreseeable future.

How would a St. Louisan get to do this survey-thing?

You can do it via phone.

You can sign it using the pencil tool.

1. Open the file in Abobe Reader XI

2. If it is 'sideways' click on view > rotate view > counterclockwise

3. Click on the Comment block in the upper right hand side of the program

4. Click on 'Drawing Markups'

5. Click on the pencil icon.

6. Sign and date

7. Under Annotations (click on the text icon)

8. Click on the 'Printed Name' line and type in your name.

9. Type date as well

10. Save File and email.

Or if you need a word conversion ... Nitro may work.

They are and they are looking to have around 100 respondents by end of year. I can't say anything about the interview itself as that would be what is called 'respondent invalidation', but it was an amazing experience for me.

I live all the way north in BC Canada, but I'm a sociology major. I'm getting pretty close to my bachelor now, and in the off chance I go for my masters, I was thinking of doing my masters thesis on Bronies. Obviously someone else had the same idea.

Yay so she is going to give me a word copy.

How I missed this I don't know. Tablet must have scrolled too fast. Well, hopefully someone else will be able to use it if they run into the same issue. :D

They have researched Star Wars fans and in general nerd culture. In fact there was a comparative study between the average Star Wars fan and Star Trek fan. Oddly enough there were distinct lines of demarcation with some of the personality types. Anyhow ....

The Brony fandom deserves study for these reasons ... printing press ... Marconi ... Bell ... Cronkite  ... Comcast ... Social Media

Give me one fandom that exploded in the public consciousness with the use of new media being coopted by the consumers themselves. Bronies aren't a way of life or a cause ... but we are a harbinger of group celebration in the foreseeable future.

Human civilization is being changed but the way information and entertainment is being shared. This is part of that.

Edit

Did it. 10/10 would discuss again. Seriously, they need more respondents.

What these guys said. The desire to study a particular group doesn't necessarily rise from the idea that that group is "abnormal". (Incidentally, in this particular case that couldn't be further from the researchers' mindset/approach. I won't say anything specific because I participated, but... just take my word for it.) Even the most seemingly trivial of things can actually be important in a way.

Heck, it's entirely possible that the conclusion (and thus the point) of the research might end up being that bronies are by and large NOT in any way "abnormal". And you know what? Call me crazy, but from where I'm sitting, having large studies come out saying those sorts of things seems like it might do us some good.

In conclusion, I'm with Jeric. Give these folks more responses.

I just completed my interview and I can inform anyone worried that it doesn't come across like we're being stereotyped or anything remotely negative. The person I spoke with asked some good questions and was receptive to what I had to say and it never seemed like they had an angle or were trying to lead me at all.

If you can, I'd recommend participating.

You gut the exact same 'impression' I had :D

I like talking to friendly types.

Heh, not going to disclose questions, but I sort of took the 1 hour time limit and shredded it to pieces. I think that the shear time of the interview made me realize exactly how much a fan I actually am of MLP

I'm looking very much forward to it! Got my interview slot lined up for this week, so I'd be more than happy to post an update later.

I would also just like to add that I'm also of the opinion that studies like these aren't offensive or aimed at labeling us as abnormal at all.

To be honest, I'm flattered that someone would want to dedicate many hours of their life to doing research on a subculture to which I claim membership. For all the love and tolerance language that gets preached within fandom, I say preach it somewhere where it has an opportunity to reach more ears. This is a great chance to represent ourselves well!

I wish I could do it, but I'm only 17. :( (P.S. What can't she just use skype?)

I did comment that the research eliminated a portion of the fan base, but I think that the 18+ decision was made to eliminate the extra legal work involved (you you would have to have a parent or guardian sign a release and even possibily be on the call, with can impact the data.

As far as skype, it's complicated, but a skype chat is easier to share and it again opens the study up to litigation. Also, I think they are going to delve into response cues and signals that you simply can't hear or see on a text chat.

This, precisely. They can pick up verbal cues more clearly on a phone call than they could if you had a crappy internet connection as well.

Ooh, sorry, but I can't. Love to, but can't.

Yo! I'm Shenron00, but you can call me “Shen” if you want!

Thanks to WheatleyCore for the sig! BTW, yes, I do realize that's Carnage and not Shenron.

I missed her when she was in town, since I live in Baltimore, but I can still do it over the phone. I don't know if it will be long-distance though, considering I'm still in the same country. If it is I might not be able to participate.
