So, I wonder which of these antivirus programs you ponies have tried and which one you think is the best.

I was in this thread and then I thought it would be quite interesting to know which programs you prefer.

Also, tell us why you like/not like the program.

You might find a new program you like better!

Here are some links to the Antivirus programs on the list:

Avast!

AVG

Avira

Bitdefender

Comodo

ESET

F-Secure

Kaspersky

Norton

Panda

I use AVG for constant background protection and it seems to work quite well. Haven't gotten a virus in over a year i think. I use Malwarebytes for scans though as it seems to find some things AVG misses.

I've used Norton and McAfee, and I'm currently using Webroot. Norton was ok, McAfee was terrible, and Webroot seems to be fine. Webroot seems so simple, and it really is. I think I'm going to stick with Webroot, since it hasn't screwed me over yet.

Microsoft Security Essentials works pretty well, actually

It doesn't take up too much running in the background, either

Yeah, I have been using Microsoft Security Essentials for a while and I have not had any problems with it so far.

It really doesn't seem to be too demanding on the system. It runs quite nicely - even on my 5 year-old laptop.

Been using diffrent programs but are using AVG right now. Norton Does the job well but uses a buckload of resources. Trend Micro is an am wery happt with too... but their firewall was horrible to use..same with AVG.. their Firewall system are slow and hard to configure. Avast I have bad expirienses with and i have never tried Microsofts own Antivirus

I have tried all Antivirus programs on the list exept F-Secure and Panda and I must say Avast! Wins by far.

I want to write about a few of the programs here:

Avast! Is just brilliant. It works perfectly and have discovered all virus I have got. It also has some cool features. Also, it's FREE!

AVG was good too, but I downloaded some viruses on my other computer while I had AVG then after some work to remove them I did the same but with Avast!, and Avast! did better. Also, AVG is a quite annoying program. Sometimes it does really stupid things, such as blocking websites that doesn't need to be blocked, and they can't be un-blocked.

Comodo's antivirus wasn't actually that good. But it's firewall was a beast. Comodo has the best firewall out there imo.

Norton was a program I used before Avast! and it worked okay but now when I compare Norton with other programs, I see that Norton isn't as good as some other programs like Bitdefender, AVG and Avast!. So, my tip is stay away from Norton.

I wouldn't classify any anti-virus software to be the best. Simply because they all work in different ways.

I use "Avast!" on my desktop pc and MSE on my laptop. I'm very pleased with how simply both of them are to use.

Both of them are free as well. However, you can get a paid version of "Avast!".

Microsoft Security Essentials works for me. Super easy to use and does its job. MSE and Spybot have been my combination since I got my computer.

Norton is the best simply because its the most advanced.

Everyone picks Avast just because they got it and its free.

It is good but the free version cant be compared to the big ones like Norton.

"Everyone picks Avast just because they got it and its free." is wrong. I pick Avast because I have tried alot of Antivirus programs and it worked best.

I had the full verision of Norton for about 3 years and I have done a few tests to compare Norton with the free verision of Avast!, and eaven though Norton is more advanced, the free verision of Avast! beated it in all of my tests. I have the full verision of Avast now, btw and I guess Norton works just fine but in my opinion, Norton is evil.

I have Webroot and it's serviceable. Not the best but not the worst. It gets the job done.

On my Linux systems i have used Avast, and ClamAV/Clamtk, they never detected anything (except for false positives) but its not bad to at least have them just in case. Many people don't know these programs exist on Linux, you just have to search for them, in fact almost all that you listed have Linux versions, they just don't always have them listed on there main websites.

Yes, Linux has very few virus threats, but that doesn't mean its immune to malware, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_malware

i like Avast the best IMO, its Linux version has a nice GUI. some of the other scanners (AVG, Avaria) don't have GUI's.

On the Windows world of things i would say Avast, and Microsoft Security Essentials are the Best.

This comes directly from Microsoft:

I had avast professional for about a year and now the license is expired. I do not have money to pay for another year :P:( but I started using Security Essentials from microsoft (installed on my win 7 64). I want to be sure that this software can be as good as stand alone anti virus softwares like avast, norton and others.

It's interesting that you mention Norton. Norton, in my view, and that

of many others of us here, is, along with McAfee, one of the worst

of the anti-virus programs available. I strongly recommend against

it.

But the free Avast is very good, as is Microsoft Security Essentials,

and also Avira. If you are willing to spend a little money, I

recommend NOD32, but if you want a free one, the best are Avast,

Avira, and Microsoft Security Essentials. So you've already made a

good choice.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials and MalwareBytes Anti-Malware.

Additionally, I take a few extra safety measures as well, such as only using the computer as an administrator when necessary, routine backups, etc.

To be honest, the best Antivirus is the Windows Task Manager...

I agree, just need that and you can get away without any antivirus

that is always open on my pc and... still havent been even threatened by anything

Exactly. I keep Malwarebytes for its superior detection, but bulky real-time antiviruses are rather unnecessary.

I've been running a 64-bit OS since window XP and Avast! was the first AV program that I found that would work under the 64-bit version of XP I have run panda, norton, and AVG in the 32-bit days as well as McAfee

Avast is the best. Your argument is invalid.

Avast updates automatically if you set the preferences to that, and since it updates to keep your files protected from even the newest infectious software, it's very rare if you ever do get any sort of infection. When it finds a virus, you get an automatic notification, and it removes it automatically or sometimes if you restart your computer. All viruses go to the virus vault which I have no idea how to use it or what it's for. It doesn't block anything that isn't for a fact infected and you can run any potentially infected things in the Avast sandbox.

I don't only use Avast, though, I use it in combination with AVG, Norton, and McAfee.

Oh, yeah, and Avast is free.
