Just because a writer has no experience doesn't make him bad. Maybe he was hired based on a spec script, maybe even this  was the spec script and the writing team gave it to him. Episodes have a lot of hands in them, and they work together on assigning the episode outline to a particular writer. Maybe it'll be the best written Dashie episode of the series, who knows. Outright skipping it based on experience only, without even seeing his writing samples, seems really silly to me.

This!  So much this!

J. K. Rowling didn't have any novels previously published when she wrote Harry Potter.  Imagine if we applied the logic you guys are using on this new writer and you'll find it quite sad!  "But you don't have any other novels previously published, Ms. Rowling!  This novel is gonna suck!"

Or imagine getting your first job and we applied that logic; all your co-workers treat you like trash and complain.  "Why didn't our boss hire someone with more experience?  Our company is going downhill now!"

actually, that's actual legitimate corporate logic nowadays in business: If you don't have prior experience you're going to have to spend a few years doing unpaid internship to get hired, businesses almost never hire straight out of the box unless they're near minimum wage ones :P

It's really just a different job, and the Mane Six's jobs never interfere with the plot. Applejack probably does hours and hours of farmwork every day, and being a princess is presumably a big responsibility too, and these things never seem to matter. When you're as fast as Rainbow Dash, commute to Cloudsdale and back really isn't a big deal :P

Working on a farm and being in what is essentially the Equestrian Air Force are (pardon the pun) two horses of different colors. And with Twilight, spending time with her friends and making new ones IS part of her job.

Don't be a nerd. Join the herd!

I didn't even mention whether your first position was entry-level or not though.  Typically, you'd assume that and entry-level people are still given leniency and are mentored; I'm pretty sure this new writer was treated as an entry-level person and was highly watched over and mentored.  They didn't just leave him alone so he could write some poor, pony, fanfic smut that other fans are fond of doing.

If all entry-level positions were treated like a brick wall, we wouldn't get genius writers.

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that this is supposed to be the big "Rainbow Dash becomes a Wonderbolt"(and a lot of this is definitely towards my bias for the character talking), yet they're giving it to someone who's practically green, which is a bold, borderline crazy move, but one that doesn't sit well with some fans

I'm willing to admit though that's definitely unfair on my part to judge though, as these kinds of things happened in the past yet I wound up fairly surprised. I remember when Corey Powell was tasked for writing Scootaloo's first episode within 3 seasons despite being new to the show, and she ended up making one of the show's best episodes with her debut. Hell I remember when Double Helix was tasked with making the first new Strider game in years, despite their portfolio consisting mostly of shitty shooters and having no experience in a game like Strider, and yet the game ended up being awesome. We know pretty much nothing other than a vague 30 second clip and the synopsis, and we should at least reserve judgement on the episode until it airs, the guy should be given a chance

The fandom continues to find things to complain about! What a surprise :P

I don't care if it's a new writer; after all, he wouldn't be working on the show if DHX didn't think he was good at what he does, and given DHX's track record, I'd say we can trust them ;)

Honestly, this preview was pretty funny, and overall it looks like this could be a fun episode. I'm excited! :D

While they are something of a military organization, the Wonderbolts have been more analogous to a professional sports team since their introduction. Sure, it's a time commitment. But professional athletes (and people in the air force, for that matter) have personal lives just like everybody else does. Until Spitfire or somebody says "Hey you have to live in Cloudsdale and you can't leave unless I say so" there's no reason to assume that would be the case. We can just assume Dash will be Wonderbolting offscreen whenever she used to do weather team things offscreen.

This is a prequel to Rainbow Factory...

If in this vids, RD just fly like she used to, completely perfect, then why should I care about this ep? A really intriguing trailer/teaser make us think the main character will fall...

RD fan's comments are over the place in EQD. I like RD too but I will stay calm until I watch this ep. If this ep is bad, you guy can type any hateful comments about new writer, episode or even Josh Haber but not now...

I hope you don't think I disagree with this. I was asking why Hasbro doesn't hire fans to write for episodes.

You realize hiring doesn't work that way, right? The company doesn't call you up and offer you a job out of nowhere unless you're already a big established name, you have to actually go out and apply for it. So don't ask why doesn't Hasbro hire fans, ask why fans aren't trying to apply themselves.

Of course, that requires that they either are screenwriters or are trying to get into the business, because you actually can't support yourself being hired to just write a few episodes per season on one show. They're going to have to apply to not only MLP, but to other shows as well, and you can't always find work in your field. Pretty sure you actually have to be there for meetings, so there's relocation unless you already live in LA. The application process can be hard, since you'll likely need a portfolio or some kind of past experience to point to, and then there's the interview process. One misspelling on the cover letter, one messed answer during an interview, that's enough to lose the job. Harsh, but that's usually how it is.

Plus, maybe those people have other career plans and/or only write fanfiction for fun in their spare time.

Some of the writers on the show didn't and still don't have very long IMDB pages.

People don't submit their IMDB page when applying. IMDB is only the stuff other people can uncover, if they bother too for that specific person, kind of like Wikipedia, not the actually collection of the writer's past working experience that they keep track of and chose to show to potential employers. You don't even need notable work in television at first, you can have play scripts or other writing experiences be the stuff you submit.

Locking this for cleanup. This thread is about the preview for an upcoming episode. If you want to discuss professional writers vs. fan writers you can do it elsewhere in a separate topic.
