gaming Do you enjoy watching/doing speed-runs?

Speed running is something rather crazy within gaming. With many, many popular Youtube channels doing speed runs and huge charity events surrounding it, speed running is as popular as ever. It takes immense skill and dedication to do a proper speed run of a game, regardless of the category of the run itself.

Makes me want to ask, do any of you like to watch or even do speed runs yourself? You can also post some of your favorites in this thread as well. ^__^

I certainly don't enjoy doing speed runs mainly because I have nowhere near the skill to do anything close to that, nor do I like the stress involved.

However, watching them can be a fun time. I always find it strangely entertaining to watch someone absolute destroy a game I love, with hilarious speed and skill, like this run of Megaman X done at AGDQ:

That game was a huge part of my childhood, and he absolutely devastated it. XD In a little over a half hour no less.

I wouldnt enjoy making a speed run, first of all, like you said, i dont have the skills for that and trying something again and again, just to fail at the last part or something, really frustrates me.

I mean, one racing Level in Jak 2 even made me cry after hours of failing to get the gold medal.

And, i rather look at the game and enjoy the view, instead of rushing trough it. ( even though most speed runners have probably beaten the game normally first ) But still. I dont like rushing all that much. Except if i have to, because its a game mechanic, like quick time events or something.

I also dont watch speed runners, i want to play the games myself and then i dont want to watch the game again because i already know what happends.

But i watch Playtroughs, whenever i cant beat a game, to see what happends.

In Walktroughs, you at least still get to look around and appreciate the game, instead of watching someone rush trough things.

But i admit, watching some of those Speed Runners can be really amazing and the real pro players are a blast to watch.

So, they have my respect, but still, i mostly just ignore Speed Runs.

I watched a speed run of Pac Man World 2... mostly for nostalgia since that was one of my favorite platformers as a kid. I mean they're interesting to watch, if they do a childhood favorite, and don't do teleporting/skip glitches.

Now would I do it myself?... in a way I kinda do when I play WoW as the group's tank I try to clear the dungeon like a speed runner but get slowed down by inexperienced players. I've also tried my luck at the Stratholme speedrun record... though I come no where close to the record despite how well I perfect my tactics. I think the record was 2:27, and my time ends up being around 3:30. I think its because the record holder is a Druid, and I played on a Warrior.

Depends on the game, but for the most part I'm not that big of a fan, I prefer more in depth walkthroughs

I'm not skilled enough to actually attempt a speed run of a game. I prefer to take my time with it the first time because of wanting to immerse myself in the world it offers. On subsequent playthoughs, I'll go as fast as I want though not along speed run standards. I have actually watched some speed runs over on YouTube and it amazes me at how good they are.

I can't say I've ever tried speed running, but I highly doubt it's my thing. I prefer to spend time enjoying the environments and exploring in games, and trying to speed through area's for the best time ruins that for me.

Speed Runs as a whole I only really enjoy because of the commentary and the personality of the casters the same for lets plays :)

I absolutely adore sonic game speedrunners, SA2B speedruns are some of the best, and I definitely love watching them.

Honestly, I don't like speed-runs. Perhaps it's just my personal taste of wanting to enjoy the artwork, music, and design of levels instead of wanting to speed right through them. I've never been the type of gamer that wants to show-off skills or achieve all the digital trophies. It's also one of the main reason I play games on the easiest setting.

I can appreciate a speed run in a level, if for instance in Crash Bandicoot 3 time trials, a level can be replayed specifically with a timer as an extra goal.

Not particularly, but I used to be on the XBL leader boards for speed running Banjo Kazooie lol... that and Banjo Tooie (I know I would have for), I literally know where every single collectible item is, and the fastest and most efficient ways to clear the bosses. Someone unfamiliar could clear it in a day or two if they spent nothing but all their time playing, but I had that shit between 2 and 3 hrs, the record beats me by like 13 minutes

I've watched quite a few speedruns recently, and am actively thinking about speed-running Borderlands. It's 2 hours long and it's not that easy (Bone Head at level 6/7 is pretty ridiculous, to be honest.).

Tbh I am not a big fan of speedruns. Games (with exceptions, of course) tell a story someone took a lot of time to write. Then there are graphics, gameplay someone created for us to enjoy. Speedrun literally buries all of it, because instead of embracing entire content of the game it all gets rushed, glitches even get exposed in some cases to finish the game even faster. It is pretty much... pointless to me. But well, it is a personal preference. I want to sink into game. Feel like the character I play as, enjoy the story and the graphics if they are of good quality.

I love watching speedruns, especially during Awesome Games Done Quick, or Summer Games Done Quick.

Super Metroid is one of the most popular games to speedrun, and I enjoy watching people pull off awesome tricks with the game.

I've tried a few speed-runs but I always fail miserably. Especially when it's a platformer. Never been interested in the speed-runs enough to record them, though. I would just embarrass myself if I were to stream a run on Twitch. D:

Changing my mind, I like/dislike speed runs usually because some of them makes me envious of the players' skill. Watching hideofbeast's Megaman X upgradeless speedruns, particularly those of is one of the harder stuff like X2, X3, and X6, is some of the greatest dedication

Speedruns? Did you say SPEEDRUNS? Cause if you did, I love them @Kyoshi and definitely agree you there @Niko. Sonic SpeedRuns are mesmerizingly awesome, but so are Megaman X and Castlevania Speedruns IMO. And S:yay:y Games e.g. Speedruns of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde for the NES.

Yeah I'm oldschool to the point of being ancient :P.

Well yeah, it's just that the Sonic games were by far my favorite, of course all other speedruns are fantastic too. Being that good at the game is admirable at the very least.:D

I love watching speed-runs in video games. For a year or two, I've watched a lot of AGDQ and SGDQ speed-runs. I'm currently watching some speed-runs from this year's SGDQ. Watching those speed-runs makes me want to do a speed-run of my own. I've tried to do a speed-run of Kingdom Hearts, but I didn't really do that well. I've been thinking of giving the game another try in the future.

No, I don't. Not only does it defeat the purpose of having normal fun, but it makes it feel like I'm being a show-off or trying too hard to be famous for speed runs. Its really not my thing and I'd rather have fun and explore the games' environments than to try to speedrun for bragging rights (most speedrunners simply show off by claiming to be better, when they're not really trying).

I feel like you're missing the purpose of them.

Also, "most speedrunners simply show off by claiming to be better, when they're not really trying"

uh, that is not true in the slightest. Speedruns take a ton of practice, it's not something you learn immediately. For instance, all the speedrunning tricks in Super Metroid are really hard to pull off, and take a lot of practice.

Also, speedrunning can be fun, and the purpose is to show off for people who like them. There's even two week long charity streams every year, strictly for speedrunning. Awesome Games Done Quick, and Summer Games Done Quick.
