Would you make a bad moderator?

Pan the Fabulous Ferret

Yes, because I'm an idiot. Most people don't think so, since I wasn't public schooled and got a better education, but I am.

This is your average, everyday annoying signature.

Are you seriously reading this?

Really?

Wow. I didn't think you'd actually waste enough time to get to the fourth line.

Or the fifth, for that matter. What, am I interesting or something?

I'd really be a horrible Mod. Like, hands down, worst mod on the entire PLANET. For one, I am barely here, (Which I am trying to fix BTW) And, all the PRESSURE would be way to much for me to handle. I hate confrontation, and really, really, really, let people walk all over me. So would I be the "Fun mod, who you can kick around and get away with all types of crap"? Most likely!!!

I don't know if I would be a good mod or not. I mean, I never thought about ever becoming one.

But if I was one, I would make sure this place is organized and safe. If there was a problem, I would go and fix it to the best of my ability. And the best part about the job would be helping people out. But the only problem I would have is this: I would have to be on here most of the day. I mean yeah I could be on for a few hours, but not an entire day. That would be too much for me. I'm not the type of person who could do such a job.

Just give free coffee to everyone and well you'd be the best mod in my opinion  sig-3769473.mlp-dehappy.png

lol Derpy~

But yeah. I totally agree with your sentiment there. Best Mod for coffee dispensing.  It has a ring to it.

Also, very cute Pinkamena images Airbourne.  :fluttershy:

*Makes probably the most useless, smallest and damn right crappiest post in the thread* > *Gets 4 brohooves* :o seriously? :o

On the subject though. I'd say I would be a decent moderator due to the fact that I generally would know which course of action to take when moderating. The thing that would probably get me stuck is my speed of doing stuff that a moderator would do. Like for example I've seen a few topics; Some needed to be binned for obvious reasons while others needed to be moved, etc. They were all dealt with before I even hit the 'report' button :P

I'm quite slow at this stuff but I know I'd be good due to the fact that I'm fair and will always do what is right. Not sure I'd be up for taking on the position if I was given the chance, though.

Check out his title : P

Meh, honestly?.. I'd think I would do a pretty good job. I've moderated before, not on forums websites, but in game servers. I've received many compliments, and people strongly respected me.

Again, that's what I've seen from my view, not much of others. If there was trash talked about me, then all well. I wouldn't do anything bad in the first place to receive that treatment haha.

I'd probably be an okay mod. I would try and get stuff done for the community but I don't know how well I'd do in the warnings and bans. I would probably be very lenient on what people say because hey it's not hurting anyone.

Oh, and it would be very hard for someone to do something that I would consider warning/ban worthy.

I would bring an age of darkness, which would make even Feld0 shake in fear.

Wait, did you really believed it? You should feel ashamed of yourself

Or...Am I serious?

Nah, just kidding. I would permaban anyone that disliked shipping

  • 1 year later...

I would arbitrarily ban people and justify my actions by claiming that the ban-ee had "crazy eyes" and "tried to stab me."  I'm just kidding: Most of the people who might have inspired me to abuse my minor amount of power are already gone.  I...  I can't wrongfully ban them anymore. ; _ ;  This is about me and my feelings. ; _ ;;; ;

If you would consider my 2007-2012 self, yes, very. Mainly due to the fact I had a certain issue with another forum that got me very depressed.

But as of recent, I have calmed down a bit and let depression influence my decisions a lot less, so yeah, I would make a good one.

Now I'll sound totally selfish and I'll feel extremely bad for this, because I don't like praising myself, but I'll tell you the story, so that perhaps you'll find some tips on how to not be a bad candidate and hopefully will give you some knowledge regarding stuff happening behind the scenes.  :P

My experience and how I became a moderator
I'm a global moderator on other, game developing related forums (also using IPB software by the way) for about a year (I believe) and my 'boss', nor staff never complained on me, it was rather the other way around.
I didn't even apply for that position ~ I was just posting, posting and posting, that I was appearing at the top in Today's Top Posters list very often. One day I've received a private message from administrator with question, if I'd like to help organizing the forums, since I was 'everywhere' anyway (that's also what other members kept saying). After some conversation I agreed and started small as a local mod and later got promoted to a global one. Otherwise I wouldn't be a mod I think, because even though I like organizing things and waving with my helpful hoof all over the place, I don't think I'd be asking if I could become one - as I said, I don't like praising myself, so saying stuff like "I'd be a great mod, pick me!" isn't totally in my style. I just prefer when someone else judges if I'd be good or not, rather than throwing bunch of promises etc..

Now before you'll ever want to apply for that position, it is worth keeping in mind few things:

Becoming a mod isn't just a matter of getting a shiny badge and raise your fame. It gives you many responsibilities as well, so think twice before trying to 'shine'.

You may get private messages with various questions regarding forums and not only

If you like to sacrifice some of your time to help the others - you're good to go!

Members, that are confused or just need advice may ask you for help. If you're a lazy person, who doesn't like explaining things or doing potential troubleshooting, then it might be the first barrier for you, though not exactly. It is understandable, that we all have our real life, but you can't ignore members for ages. You took the responsibility, so at least you should try to guide that member to help him find the next steps or at least redirect him to more experienced staff or place with information. Replying like "I don't know, ask an admin" is a baaaaaad thing, that moderator can do. Instead of that, you could ask an admin yourself and then use acquired information to explain that to the member, or something like this. Just don't be unsociable.

Sometimes I'm receiving PM's with questions regarding some rules, where to post stuff etc.. I always try to help others in need, even if that will require few hours of work and explaining.

You may spend so much time on keeping the forums clean

If you like cleaning and organizing stuff around, you're good to go!

That's one of the main tasks, that moderators have. Move threads to more appropriate area, edit/merge posts if necessary (double posting, for example) and stuff like this.

Believe me, sometimes things may get messy, so you should be prepared for some action if necessary.

I've noticed, that these forums don't really require constantly watching for threads, but I'm sure moderators are busy anyway. By the way, respect their job, because they surely are putting so much of their free time to make this place better for you.  ;)

Sometimes it may even take hours to clean things, that appeared when you were inactive etc..

Be friendly

I don't think anypony would like a moderator, that uses strong language, doesn't really interact with the community or what's worse - doesn't want to help at all, because "I'm busy, go ask admin. k thx."

You should be sociable and easy-going, to not scare members away.

Okay, that's enough of that. ^^

Now to answer the question - I'm doing my best and I truly think, that I'm not/ I wouldn't be a bad moderator.

- I like interacting with people and helping whenever I can, so even moving a huge list of threads for somebody isn't a big deal for me. As long as it will help somepony, I'll gladly give him some time to at least try.

- I'm sociable and easy going - if you've talked with me, then you'll know, that all you have to do to befriend me is just to be yourself (but not be a baaaad pone!). I'm not using foul language and I prefer to not see that in places like this. You can always message me when needing even a tiiiiny help with something.

- I'm always supportive and I don't like insulting. I truly dislike random not-constructive hate feedback/comments on others' work.

- I just like to organize things. I really, really like spending my time doing something, that will make the environment better.

- Though sadly, since I got a job in real life, I have much less time to offer, but still I'm trying to get on forums whenever I can and I'm always* online during weekends.

* - of course let's not forget about some time for sleep or just unexpected rl events.

Pretty irrelevant, but I was picked as one of the 'Hardest Working Members' during Annual Awards 2015.

You don't need to have any super skills to be a good moderator, just be nice and ready to help. (=

Sorry for that wall of text, but hopefully you will find some information useful for future.  ;)

I have been on a mod on a nsfw community (i don't do nsfw anymore) and i was the only one modding (my bf owned it) it had over 3000 people when i was banned (bf got mad and banned me) one week later the community was deleted for child porn so umm i guess i was good at it i worked my hide off and i wasn't going to not finish the job.. my main issue was being to open to removing posts that i didn't think fit the rules... altho I'm a go down with my ship type of person on some things so thats a problem..

It's a good wall of text, actually. I've got quite a bit of computer and admin exeprience myself - I am CompTIA A+ certified, and am working on restarting my portfolio - once I setup my VPS.

I'd be a sucky mod. I love being here but my personal schedule is far too unpredictable and busy to be able to devote the time and focus necessary to doing a good job. And I would want to do a great job, otherwise there'd be no point. I'm also not equipped to handle anything technical in nature. I'd screw something up for sure and watch sheepishly as the whole site came crashing down in a nasty splash of ones and zeros. Most of all, I'd have a hard time being detached and impartial in areas I'm passionate about that might require my attention.

Nope, it just wouldn't be for me. I'd be a nervous wreck.

@@Blackshirt Brony, Yeah, it may kinda get boring over time as you're doing the same, but that's not any different than being a normal member. As a member, you're posting here and there and look - you're not trolling the others, so the same would go with being a mod ~ posting here and there, while doing some cleaning in meanwhile.  :squee: And even if you'd get bored, then banning random users wouldn't be nice, you could just leave.  :-P

@@Dreambiscuit, It's just a matter of getting used to the layout, so there's no need to worry. After a month you'd be a pro-mod. It's more important to be kind, helpful and reliable and don't tend to troll the users - the rest would come with time. Besides, there always would be the rest of staff for you, so you wouldn't be alone.  ;)  I don't think you'd sink that ship down.  :)

id try to be well liked tho but i expect those i punish to dislike me XP

I don't like punishing anypony. It doesn't come easy for me. Whenever I have to remind rules or something, then I'm trying to do that as gentle as possible, to not make the user feel uncomfortable.

Though when it comes to bots and stuff, then ... rekt them all!   jk

Im not sure about myself.

I am a Mod in a few other Forums and also had ( still do, but its inactive ) my own Forum, but these Sides have only a few Users, so i have no Idea how i would do, in such a big Forum.

I probably would have to overcome my shyness and in some Situations, i might have no Idea what to do exactly.

Im not sure, i might be able to be a Mod...i never really had the Chance to try it out on a bigger Side.  :o

But yeah...im a little to shy i guess...i might be a bad Mod, i dont know.

I used to do the janitor thing on 4chan, which is pretty much just a mod that can't ban people. If someone needed to be b&, we would send in a request or just tell the mods about it in IRC. The actual mods said I did a good job and m00t was able to tolerate my presence, so I think that I would do fairly well in an actual moderator position.
