Twilight Sparkle Alicorn/Princess Speculation [SPOILERS]

A Princess For The Rest Of Us

After seeing some photos of Princess Twilight, I'm kind of liking the look. I mean, I guess it doesn't fit in with the rest of the mane six, but who says she has to dress like a princess all the time?

That's just it. This is Twilight we're talking about here, one of the most unpretentious ponies in Equestria. She will not expect everyone to bow to her all the time any more than her brother and sister-in-law do, though I'm sure many citizens of Equestria will be inspired to do so whether she likes it or not.

Or maybe, like all the times she and her friends saved Equestria before, no one outside Ponyville will seem to recognize her as the heroine she is. Sort of like the running gag on The Simpsons where Mr. Burns always asks who Homer Simpson is despite two decades of adventures.

I'm sure the writers are sensitive to changing the group dynamic of the Mane Six. They do, after all, do this for a living, know what "jumping the shark" means and know what happened after Mork married Mindy.

Meghan McCarthy -- who's a damn good writer, by the way -- has given us both hints and flat-out statements about how Twilight's princessdom will be handled, and assures us she will still be the same Twilight we all know and love. As always and forever, she and her friends are going to have much to learn about The Magic Of Friendship.

She's also going to have to get used to her new wings.



Perhaps Princess Twilight's first official assignment will be to complete summer flight camp.

Alright, it is only for 1 episode, so, it isn't death. Basically, the destineys of all the characters are switched around and Twilight takes Princess Celstias place. Now, I wonder if they make Fluttershy responsible for Sugar Cube Corner. Imagine a hyper active Fluttershy and a Fashion Loving Applejack. I don't mind this for it will be amazing.

What annoys me about Twilight-as-princess is that it smacks of pandering to a stereotype that should have been tossed in the cultural dust bin long ago. Meghan McCarthy puts a good face on it, but I still hear Hasbro corporate forcing the princess stereotype in our faces.  Yuck.  <_<

Are you telling me you don't want to be a princess? Cause I totally would...if I weren't a male :C 

 

Though it is a fantasy type that is very common among children in general. Having fantasies of being an awesome member of royalty. In this case a princess, wether it be Celestia or Liea. That said it is a clique.

Odds are, bronies weren't even in the business model for Hasbro when they approved it. Yes, this is a ploy to sell more toys; yes, it's another way for Hasbro to sell another talking princess doll and castle set, but so was Cadance. You can certainly make the argument that this is just appealing to another girly stereotype, and you'd be right just looking at it like that. However, DHX didn't create your stereotypical princesses when they made Celestia and Luna, did they? Of course little girls are going to look at them and think "Oooh, pretty princess," but we're a little older and have noticed the nuances--even if they seem a bit sinister at times--in the Alicorn sisters' personalities. This proves that the writers--who have gone far out of their way to be as much a part of this fandom as they can--are not a bunch of dime a dozen amateurs. It's exactly what ponyvangelist alluded to: they know what kills a story and what doesn't. They do their best with what's handed to them.

The first second I saw this all I could think was "I bet Twilight is going to be an awful flyer. Can't wait to see that." And at this point that is pretty much my feelings about it.

 

I'm just glad that she keeps her pony proportions in the transformation, rather than getting the full-blown Alicorn proportions Celestia (and to a lesser extent Luna) have. Twilight's just so much more adorable as a short little pony. I can't see her as majestic at all, and I think that's why I'm having fun toying with this idea.

 

Ultimately I'd still prefer her as a unicorn but hey, it's not the end of the world.

Sweet And Sour

I've seen quite a few fans berate others for freaking out about "Twilicorn" becoming canon, and have pretty much made peace with it myself, but I fully understand why this change upsets so many of us.

Wings or no wings, Twilight graduating from a student to a princess is a major change to the premise of the show. To draw on The Simpsons again, it's as big a deal as if Homer Simpson were to have become Mayor of Springfield at the end of Season Three, and stayed mayor ever since. Goodbye Sector 7-G.

Now add a significant visual change to the mix. In Twilight's case, she's going to have wings, and they will always remind us she's different now. Referring to the Simpsons analogy again, not only is Homer Simpson the mayor now, he also has, let's say, a full head of hair.



How could anyone not consider that important?

Thus I utterly reject the idea that fans should be expected to accept this development without comment or have their concerns dismissed out of hand. This is not something that can simply be swept under the rug, and I think the showrunners have a major challenge making this work in Season Four.

I encourage all fans to give the matter as much thought and soul-searching as they need, and ask that those of us who are okay with it appreciate the fact that those of us who are not have very legitimate reasons for feeling that way.

If nothing else, it's a matter of mutual respect, and the importance of that is a lesson all true fans of this wonderful show should already know. For those who may have missed it, I suggest a refresher starting with Season one, Episode One.

As if anyone needs an excuse to watch the show in the first place...

As we all know we always loved MLP episodes, unfortunately, the structure of the episodes are growing old. We pretty much knew everything about Mane6, Spike and CMC already. That's when wings come in, it adds new variation and something we can be interested to know about. Take a look at what Meghan McCarthy wrote:

 

'But don’t worry, Pony fans — though Twilight will undergo a physical transformation, her personality will remain the same. “What we didn’t want to do was change who she is as a character, because she’s certainly someone that everyone’s proud to know and love,” McCarthy says. “I don’t think becoming a princess really changes her; I think it’s going to introduce some new challenges for her.”'

 

And as she says, she will have extra pair of wings and nothing else, she won't be OP or Mary Sue. And that princess dress? She'll probably take them off when new season comes out.

Seriously, though. Can you imagine Twilight learning to fly along with Scoots? That would be so AWESOME!

It occurs to me that the fear is based on two things regarding Twilicorn.

 

First, alot of the fear comes from the idea that so far Alicorns are all portrayed to be Princesses and that means Twilight will have to become one too. To this I say, 'Says who?'. I challenge anyone to tell me where it says in canon that every Alicorn has to be royalty. You show me this, and that's all I have to say.

 

Second, is the fear that making her a Princess would somehow cause her to have to leave her friends. I have no idea who first started this, but this notion is completely absurd, and I will tell you why. This is My Little Pony. This show's message is about friendship, and how it can solve almost any problem the ponies might face, up to and including threats by demons from Hell itself. Do you honestly think that Twilight would just outright give up on ever being with her friends again, if she became a Princess or an Alicorn? I don't think so. That would completely defeat the whole purpose of the show being about friendship. So if I were a betting man, I'd put my money on her doing the opposite, giving up being a Princess to stay with her friends.

 

In fact, that could be the reason they're doing this. Maybe this is a way to bring everything full circle for the Season Finale. After all, the series started with Twilight wanting to stay with her friends. What better way to end Season 3, than to have them revisit this prospect?

i'm honestly not overly bothered by this now, i love Twilight's alicorn design and since it's been confirmed that her personality will not change, so i personally think that we should all calm down, relax, and wait untill we actually see this episode before making any assumptions.

Frankly that's probably what at least some of the writers have in mind as well. I have no doubt Hasbro is sitting up there screaming they want more alicorn toys, but really, looking at things from a time perspective, three seasons of the same general setting is doomed to turn into monotony in S4 and S5 if things kept as the way they are. Since I have faith in the show writers who have never let me down, I'm fairly open-minded about this whole thing too.

I was thinking about the Twilight Alicorn situation today when a plausible theory suddenly hit me. In a few episodes' time is "Magical Mystery Cure" where Twilight changes everypony's futures and cutiemarks... you get where I am going with this?

 

What if Twilight Alicorn is Twiight's alternate future? I know that it is more likely her failing the exam test, but who knows? Maybe something else happens to make her an Alicorn... am I just being hopeful here?

Well (this is far fetched but) we all know that Twilight is royalty and that she is very special, having the most raw power, being an element, and celestia's personal prodigy.  Also based off of evidence it seems Celestia has a plan for Twi.  As we see in The Crystal Empire eps. Twilight's test is learning self sacrifice and letting others help.  Well long conspiracy short...

 

Celestia is day right?  Obviously Luna is night.  So the happy median here is... Thats right!  Twilight! 

What I'm saying is that perhaps Twi is being prepared for leadership and with this she maybe one of the rulers of Equestria with the two sisters...

As for your second point about a simple life in ponyville.  Well, their lives were never really that simple to begin with.  Twilight initially came to Ponyville because of a reawakining Moon God of Destruction.  She had to step up for a mayor who was never able to handle Winter Wrap-Up properly (and openly admitted this).  She was called in to deal with a Dragon, and let's not forget the fact that monsters and demons from Hell itself attack the place on a daily basis.  I hate to say it, but there's no such thing as a 'simple life' if you live in Ponyville, and this kind of change in Twilight was inevitable, given all the stuff she's been through.

I think there's a problem comparing MLP to Sailor Moon: in Sailor Moon Usagi (or Bunny, I think it's how she was named in the US) is a member of a dead government. In Equestria, unless otherwise specified, Twilight would have authority over her friends. The problem with this is that what is at stake here is not that Twilight would become faster than Rainbow Dash, but that she would get to order her friends around. This is an opportunity for a great episode but has to be done right or will feel forced, especially to the ones, like me, who thought that Keep Calm and Flutter On felt rushed.

1) They all have strengths and weaknesses, but nothing that would put them anywhere near the level of an *alicorn princess*.  It's like saying that I'm an equal of Bill Gates because I;m very good at math. 

 

2) You know what I meant by "simple life in Ponyville".  If this comes to pass, it'll be a major change and likely permanent to the status quo.  And i don't know if your Sailor Moon comparison is a fair one because that assumes that she could stop being Alicorn Princess Twilight at any point.  Being a princess should mean something, otherwise it's an utterly pointless change.

I am not 100% sure if that is what's going to happen on the show. However I often wondered if the main 6 will have the honer of damehood. I wasn't sure if females could get knighted so I looked it up through a search engine and found that damehood is the female version of being knighted.
