music Does your music define who you are?

I just came up with this thought after listening to a couple songs. I noticed that most of the songs I listen to are usually upbeat and sometimes, just plain happy. And i'm a happy person! mlp-psmile.png

I honestly can't stand things like death metal and screamo. It's too... Dark for me.  :(

I mean, this is the darkest I can handle:

So I wanted to know if anyone else listens to music that reflects their personality. mlp-tcute.png

I suppose I do. I listen to Super upbeat songs at times but then I also listen to darker things as my personality is weird and I'm pretty sure I have a split personality. But yeah I seem to be listening to more darker songs though.

I suppose you could say that.

Many of the songs I listen to can fit into one of two categories: exciting movie trailer music or relaxing classical. It depends on how I feel at the time, for instance, playing qwop would require the most epic of music in the background to raise the adrenaline! Getting home from college would be the appropriate time for the calming sounds of the strings.

Entirely appropriate music for QWOP

I don't really like the darker side of music either. It's way too loud and I just don't feel it.

If music did define who I am, I'd be a man with an unnatural (and outright obscene) hate for a lot of things (at least on a musical level). 75% of what I listen to is angry and aggressive - I'm too lazy, have too much of a need to know all sides of anything, and I'm too boring to be aggressive and angry all the time.

The closest thing that my music could make be would be serious. Because I have a limit to how stupid my friends can be, before I get ma- okay maybe my music DOES define me...

I think it can, but it doesn't necesarily mean it does all the time. I listen to a little bit of metal, but I'm not a metalhead by any means.

Mostly, I like to listen to Alternative, and I find myself to be relaxed and optimistic (for the most part ;) )

I listen to a lot of Linkin Park, and if you've ever heard an LP song, you know they're chock-full of anger and hate. I usually prefer songs with a darker, more depressing tone. Which is not to say I don't enjoy more lighthearted songs, I simply find depressing songs more relevant to my interests.

Not really as I listen to mostly darker songs, like "Angel of Death,"but then I can quickly go from that to a Disney song.  Judging by that i'd say it's bup-kiss.

Heh, I'm listening to Angel of Death as I type this. Reign in Blood is one of my favorite albums :)

Anyway, probably 80% of what I listen to is metal of some kind, and pretty much all of it is dark, not to mention a lot of people would find some of it completely fucked up. I love violent, brutal lyrics paired with fast, heavy, relentless riffs you find in thrash, death, black, and other such genres of metal, but I also love deep, thought provoking lyrics and interesting stories set to the beautiful playing of progressive. And of course, I often sing along to Classic Rock, MLP and Disney soundtracks while driving.

I may seem somewhat dark on here, but that's because I can let it all out without social inhibitions. In real life, I only act like this among close friends and other people I can trust to not judge me for it.

I mean the music I listen to does not describe/define me fully as to who I am. I enjoy a wide variety of Hard Rock, Blues, Heavy Metal, Punk, Grunge, and etc...

Bands including: AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, The Rolling Stones, ZZ Top, Rush, Zeppelin, The Who, Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and etc.

Trust me I could go on and on with all the artists that I like. Music motivates me and in RL I am a very mellow/relax person that goes with the flow.

But I wouldn't say the music I listen to actually defines who I am completely.

I've said it before on this forum a few times; I enjoy simplicity. The music I listen to is very simple. We gots da kick, da hi-hat, da snare, da clapz, da bassline, sum Japanese vocals, and da lead synths nd stuffz.

I listen to J-core, mostly. I love listening to Japanese vocals because:

1. - The language is set up to fit in with music beautifully.

2. - I am a total weeaboo noobface.

3. - The simplicity in the phonetics is appealing.

The "hardcore electronic" part of the J-core scene I love so much is appealing because it gives me a sense of relief from thinking 24/7. I strongly dislike thinking nowadays, because I've always been an overthinker. I can get quite depressing if I go think about certain things, so I like to avoid deeper thought and whatnot most of the time, and listening to 170 - 200bpm J-core is pretty much me mindlessly raving in my head. Music absolutely defines me.

EDIT: For some reason, this was posted twice. I posted it, and nothing happened. I changed it a bit and posted again, and there were 2. This is the good one.

Not at all. Your music won't define who you are. It's the other way around.

Here's how I came to be the way I am and also how I got into the music I like.

As a kid, I was extremely friendly. Everyone loved me. Then, my family moved into a new city. I wound up skipping a grade, making me the youngest in my class. I am still the youngest to this day. It became harder to make friends. I was, and still am, bullied. I met a couple of guys who I thought were my friends, but they were just using me. I developed trust issues. We moved again, and I was bullied more than ever. I learned to not give a fuck. Then I became a brony. Now I'm starting to be more friendly again and I'm making friends.

I was raised on rock. I've been a fan of bands like ACDC, Van Halen, and Guns N' Roses all my life. I got into metal (like Metallica, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, System of a Down, etc.) while being bullied. It reflected my mood. I later got into Grunge (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, etc.) and Blues (Eric Clapton, Chuck Berry, etc.), But I'm mostly a Metal and Classic Rock guy.

Personalities are defined by circumstance. Opinions and taste are defined by personality.

I hate crappy sappy happy music because it's full of shit. Life isn't all sunshine and rainbows. I like metal because it acknowledges that life can suck sometimes, instead of pretending that everything is beautiful. If everything was beautiful, then all the war and killing in the world wouldn't be there. Metal, to me, is about acknowledging the sad truth and moving on. It's not that I hate all happy songs. I just hate the kind that ignore all of the negativity in the world and act like it's not there.

I like MLP for the same reason that I like metal. It shows that life can be challenging, but friends can help you get through it all.

Well I could not have summed it up as well as you just now posted! Totally in 100% agreement with the post above. Life has its ups and downs & you got to learn to live with the ups and downs to life.

I tend to have a really bi-polar music taste as well... I've also wondered, do people play music based on their mood? Because I know several people that play it just because it's catchy... and don't get me wrong I like catchy but it's just that for me a song to be catchy, it has to fit the mood I'm in :)

I'd say the music reflects my current mood, but not who I am in the sense you mean it.

Looking at it, my playlist is mostly mix of metal, classic and pony songs. I wonder what would that make me?

No, definitely not.

I knew this guy back in high school who was into stuff like Slipknot, and he was one of the absolute nicest guys I had ever met in my life. You definitely can't judge someone based on their taste in music. I listen to a lot of rock/metal, but that has nothing to do with who I am or my personality or anything.

mmm, i dunno. personality-wise, i'm not sure how well high-energy music describes me, nor thing that have a more aggressive or mellow tone. i guess, however, that my insane amount of music shows that i am a very open-minded individual about a lot of things. i dunno, maybe these songs remind you of me, somewhat?

If this was true, I'd be a sadomasochistic murderer with utter disregard for morals or human life with an enjoyment of many things such as weapons, blood, murder, etc. Also, I'd have a "fuck the system" attitude.

I can be a dick sometimes, but not like that ^_^

Also, I listen to alot of music from metal to rock to ska to classical to jazz to hard dance music, which does kind of say I'm open minded, which I am. Mostly.

Heheh, nope! I'm a pretty bubbly and optimistic sort of gal, and I love listening to sad instrumental pieces. Well, what I really love are emotional pieces, and oftentimes one of the stronger emotions is that sense of sadness and wistfulness. My favorite music generates an almost visceral reaction.

It's closer to being opposite to my personality than anything, considering that I usually reside in my head and are cerebral in nature.
