How "canon" is Equestria Girls going to be?

Pony Of The Month

Recommended Posts

I ask this because the synopsis for Equestria Girls has people worried that it will affect the canon of FiM. If you don't know, the synopsis is that Twilight's crown is stolen, and she goes into a magical mirror, which takes her into an alternate universe, to find it.

Here's what I think: This is most likely going to be made by different people than FiM. It'll still be DHX studios, but it's not going to have the same writers, animators, voice actors, etc. As FiM. Sure, Daniel Ingram is still doing the music, but that doesn't mean this isn't just an adaptation.

I think this is just going to be an adaptation of the show. Which means that it won't be canon.

But what do you think?

We have had confirmation that this will not affect the canon of the show and that this is more of a what if come to life. I think that the cast will remain the same to make it easier on Hasbro so they dont have to host an audition for voice actors. It isnt something to concern ourselves with because overall we still have the option to not even watch it.

The mind of the host will desperately try to create memories where none exist. Simple right?

Hmmm...probably non-canon, to say the least. But then again, It COULD be canon. For all we know, they could also introduce G1 characters into FiM. I can see it now...

Hm. This poses an interesting question. I'm conflicted, because we don't know enough, yet.

Arguing for canon:

It could very well be canon. We have had no proof otherwise so far. It could easily be recounted by Twilight and friends in her future adventures as a "Remember when...?" Besides, just because it was created by other people than the FiM team does not mean it must immediately be non-canon. For any Zelda fans out there, you may recall that the Oracle series for the GBC was created by Capcom, yet it is still considered canon by Nintendo, even receiving a place in the official timeline shown in Hyrule Historia. </Zelda nerdiness>

Arguing for non-canon:

Should the show itself introduce paradoxes and contradictions with the canonicity of FiM, the show will most likely be non-canon. However, this is simply a speculative argument, and cannot be confirmed or denied at this time.

In all honesty, I must reserve my judgment until I see the show. As of now, I have no way of knowing.

I'm pretty sure they said this would be a spinoff for the show. It's not going to be canon, or as you might say, affect Season 4 and beyond in anyway. I do wish that they make a full movie with the ponies though, that would be fun.

Spinoff. It seems so in-canon, making it canon will be generally accepted as a bad move. Also, it looks like it SUUUUUUUUUUCKS!

I think that Equestria Girls are going to be good in my opinion. I know its the same, but I'm gonna give it chance to shine like I did with MLP FiM

Well, we didn't really get any proof of it becoming canon yet. But, there could be a slight possibility of the spin-off becoming canon. Unless, it has flashbacks from the show and other evidence of canon material.

It depends for me

The legend of Zelda series had things that where produced that where considere cannon to the storyline. (However I admit that all Zelda fans want to forget CD-i Zelda games).

Anyways depending on how things are they could be canon. Unless there Is a cop-out a the end, then that would be stupid.

Anyways I'll wait and then make judgments.

Yes, but it depends on who's writing it after all. Does anyone know if M.C. Larson or Amy K. Rogers is in part of the writing team for EQ girls? Just curious.

Canon is such a weird concept really, when you think about it. Given that writers, producers, and the like change their minds on stuff throughout the creative process, and they may even change jobs/roles, there's really no way of knowing if something is truly 'canon' or not until long after the series has ended and everything about it is frozen.

As the new trailer shows (pinned topic), it actually begins in the canon universe, so it's not some completely separate entity. That said, I imagine plenty of people can simply discard it as something made up that didn't actually happen.

I think it'll have the little place in the cannon world for a little bit, but after the things over it won't really have any affect on anything else in the future.

So basically it won't affect the rest of the show really. I imagine it could be discarded really.

This?

Not sure, but from this I can say that EQGirls took place in a wholly different parallel dimension from the Canon Realm. There will be nothing to worry about, maybe :derp:

I think the show's going to end up being "Half-Canon"

As in it happens within MLP. but you'll never actually see it referred in the main series episodes.

Depending on how that portal works, the most I can see is Sunset Shimmer being moved back and forth from EQG to MLP.

Okay, so I'm kinda confused here. I just saw the Equestria Girls trailer (

) and I understand that she turns human and all that. But, what will happen to the main show? Will there be references and talks of the happenings in EG in the main show, or will it be disregarded and not talked of? Also, will Sunset Shimmer be in the main show? Of course, anything outside of the trailer is speculation, but what do you think? Thanks wink.png .

P.S. Do the characters remember each other in the human world? Some of them, like when Fluttershy was eating at the table, seemed like she didn't know Twilight.

From what my understanding is (and trust me, most of this is conjecture based on the limited information we have on the movie thus far), the movie will not affect the show's continuity.  My guess is that, aside from possible future references in the show of new pony characters (the only one of which we know of thus far being Sunset Shimmer), there will be no other references or mention of Equestria Girls in MLP: FiM, and that would make a lot of sense really.

Movie spin-offs of cartoon shows, whether they be made for TV or released in theaters, usually leave their show's continuity completely unaffected, at least as far as direct references are concerned.  In this way, although the events of the movie are technically canon within a show's continuity, by completely neglecting to mention or reference said events, the movie practically doesn't in effect end up affecting the show's continuity at all; a few good examples of this are "The Powerpuff Girls Movie" or the many TV movies released for "The Fairly OddParents", the latter of which were usually just two-parter or three-parter episodes.  One of the rare exceptions to this rule was the "Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends" movie (really the first three episodes of the show), which actually served as the pilot for the entire show and established important information/introduced main characters that affected the show's entire canon.  However, this latter example as stated is more the exception than the rule.

In conclusion, while "Equestria Girls" events may end up being a part of MLP: FiM's continuity, my guess is they will largely, if not completely, go unmentioned in the normal show's episodes in any remaining future seasons, save for possible references of new pony characters like Sunset Shimmer.  This may not even be so much to not tick off the fandom as it is for the producers' sake; they won't have to take into account as canon the events of the movie (which don't look like they'll really affect Equestria that much anyway) when writing episodes for next season.  Again, this is just a reasonable guess, but based on what I know so far, it's the best answer I can give at the moment.  We'll probably learn more between "Equestria Girls" release and the start of Season 4 next winter.

Meghan McMarthy said on twitter that she wrote EG and that Jayson Thiessen was the director and that the VC will be the same.

Like I said in another thread, i don't think we'll get talks to this event in the show.

However I do believe we'll see Sunset Shimmer in MLP as a pony which I think will be the main link of the two shows.

@@MonoBrony,

Hey there, we already happened to have a topic dedicated to discussing Equestria Girls' relationship to the main show of MLP FiM, and whether the events of the movie will impact the rest of the series and such, so for convenience I have merged your thread with the older one.

As for me, to my understanding (and chagrin) the other Mane Six members are not travelling to this other dimension, so I'm skeptical of this having much of an impact on the show. I that for better or worse, this isn't going to be referenced in the future.
