Season 6 gives one the impression that Haber has a grudge against Twilight and friends.

I have to admit that's a new one I've heard about Haber. "A grudge against Twilight and her friends..." is this because of a one time finale? The premiere clearly dedicated a good side story to at least Twilight and Pinkie serving some relevance to the plot. Now if you mean it's because he's the editor that let these stories go to final draft. I think that's a stretch he sough out stories to bring the Mane 6 down. His priorities seemed to be more, "does this teach a lesson, is it coherent, is there anything heinously risky?" Yes, yes, and no, send it off then. Those stories could have been about any character.

I meant more how she basically had only one focus episode. The finale, well, it's not that she was captured (she's been captured before), but that she was captured offscreen with no explanation.

  • The brony fandom is a much friendlier and more secure place than it was circa 2011 (good lord, at least most of the people who dislike the show/specific episodes of it are rational about it now, instead of masquerading on various social websites as a fan then hammily claiming they disliked it. Yes, that is unfortunately one such case I remember from back in the day).
  • I like the new changeling designs. They are more unique and reflect the new coda of the changelings well. Not to mention I will never cease associating Thorax with the term 'gay fairy moose' again (it's so bizarre it's beautiful).
  • 'Slice of Life' is highly misunderstood and is one of the best episodes of season 5 and possibly of the whole show.
  • 'Newbie Dash' is miles better than 'Parental Glideance', being more subtle and engaging and less loud and obnoxious (Scootaloo is clearly not a chicken, if only because no chicken's vocal chords could produce such a sound as she did in the latter).
  • I feel that 'Magical Mystery Cure' was too fast-paced for a reason, if by accident - it represents just how abrupt Twilight's ascension actually was, setting up her confusion and insecurity regarding her new role in the season 4 premiere.
  • I liked 'MMMystery on the Friendship Express' and do not consider it a bad episode.
  • 'The Perfect Pear' is FiM's version of candy - it's good on the first try, but seems to falter more with every taste.
  • I dislike 'A Royal Problem' due to the sudden, unexplained, rushed and overly simplistic conflict between Celestia and Luna, the overlong, cheesy climax, Twilight's out-of-character hyperactivity (is she a wise mentor now or not? Please pick one option and stick with it, Lady Writers) and the shoehorning of Starlight into the plot for the sake of promoting her (the conflict virtually resolved itself, rendering her pointless, even if she was well-written).
  • 'A Hearth's Warming Tail' sucked in most regards.
  • Mike Vogel is a better writer in general than Josh Haber, though, and deserves to be story editor more than the latter (I swear, not a single episode written by Josh Haber either alone or with others is better than a 7/10 - at least the Lady Writers had 'Rarity Investigates!' by the end of their first season on the show).
  • 'The Times They Are A Changeling' was pretentious and sappy, and does not deserve to be given a personal rating above a 6/10.
  • Pretty much every episode featuring Starlight has botched her characterization - even her better appearances, such as 'Every Little Thing She Does', seem to bleed from severe wounds regarding her characterization. Not many writers actually seem to know what to do with her - this is actually pretty tragic, as Starlight has potential to be the best character on the show.

  • 5 months later...

Having Rainbow Dash NOT get manipulated by a villain is a waste of a good idea. (Think about it. The villain could trick her into helping him take over Equestria by playing on her fears of losing her friends. Granted, this could also be done with Twilight.)

Some people like Slice of Life a liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitle too much. (I don't care how many times Ponyville's been attacked by monsters. A monster attack is the worst time to worry about a wedding. In fact.... couldn't they have just rescheduled the wedding?)

Why do people make a big deal about villains being redeemed? Isn't forgiveness a part of friendship? You get the impression these people should be watching the Punisher or something.

Starlight was painfully underutilized in Season 6.

They wasted a perfectly good opportunity to have Queen Chrysalis exploit Flurry Heart's powerful magic in Season 6.

I thought that it was a bit rushed to have Twilight ascend & become an alicorn after only three seasons. I would have had Twilight undergo more adventures & lessons as a pony & had her ascend to become an alicorn at the end of season five.

Season 7 / Equestria Girls mini-series update!

  • Season 1 is still one of the most consistently entertaining batches of episodes in the whole show.
  • Season 6 is by some margin the strongest year the show has had since season 2.
  • By the same token, the popular seasons 5 and 7 are both largely boring.
  • "The Perfect Pear," while terrific, is not the best episode in the show, and suffers from the show's limitations in the same way that all of the show's most ambitious episodes do.
  • Upon rewatch, I have concluded that "Amending Fences" is not very good at all.
  • I haven't enjoyed most of M.A. Larson's episodes.
  • After a certain point, characters acting "more mature" merely makes them more boring.
  • Starlight Glimmer was better in season 6 than in season 7, in no small part due to the above. She never quite built a distinct post-reformation personality, yet she had more starring roles in season 7 than any other character.
  • "Fame and Misfortune" was not entirely coherent and focused far too much on refuting dated criticisms.
  • Four seasons later, the show has still largely failed to justify Twilight becoming an alicorn princess.
  • My Little Pony: The Movie is not only tedious and generic, it's also not visually appealing.
  • The Equestria Girls short series is the best thing that series has done since Rainbow Rocks, including "Forgotten Friendship."
  • Those shorts and the aforementioned "Forgotten Friendship" went a long way to making Sunset a more well-rounded character, but now she's lacking a particular direction for her character arc.
  • The inconsistent quality of most Rainbow Dash episodes is offset by the her own character depth and development in all but the worst of them.
  • Twilight Sparkle is way more relatable and entertaining when she's anxious and dorky than when she acts as a wise mentor.
  • I wish Rainbow Dash hadn't totally accepted her parents' over-enthusiastic attitude.
  • "Shadow Play" is one of the show's weakest two-parters, because it's more focused on moralizing, expository world-building, and showing characters at their most admirable than actually emphasizing the small moments which the show excels at, and also because it's not very funny.
  • Starswirl is better in the comics, from what little I've read.
  • I really don't care about the Pillars and hope they don't become a recurring part of the series.
  • Princess Cadance has a lot of potential as a character, as she's the most down-to-earth princess and has some interesting backstory in secondary material. She should get more development.

In general, most of the negative-sounding "popular opinions" don't bother me.

like the "worst episode of each season" are not worth getting angry over.

"Daring Do being real" can be confusing, but ultimately harmless in my eyes.

"Most characters seen as Scrappies by the vocal critics" don't bother me as they all played their parts, no matter how small.

I would've liked if the MLP Movie were like the first Equestria Girls where it felt like it had a reason to exist within the shows canon.

In the first Equestria Girls, Twilight Sparkle is still coming to terms with being a new Alicorn Princess

while in the MLP Movie, it didn't really feel like there was an important reason for it to be there since the

story didn't really feel like it had any stakes, IMO.

It's been a while since I posted on this topic, so here are my current unpopular opinions.

Marble Pie is worst pony and is less interesting than what someone who absolutely hates and views Fluttershy as a one dimensional character sees Fluttershy as.

Flash Sentry despite being a victim of poorly written romance, never deserved the vitriolic hate he received from the fandom.

I don't care very much for the background ponies, and it kinda annoys me that the fandom puts more attention to them than actual characters with defined personalities.

I don't hate Zephyr Breeze.

Mirror Magic is my favorite of the 3 22 minute EQG specials.

The main 7 in Equestria Girls have have more distinct and varied character designs than the mane 6 in MLP.

Bloom and Gloom is a dull boring waste of time and is grossly overrated.

The movie has one flaw that i afraid they will transfer it to the upcoming season: add a ton of new characters/races that people may not care about for the sake of lore building, then forgot the main characters of the show. Seriously i want they write a truly great AJ episode that revolves around her before the series ends.

I dont like Friendship School idea, it make friendship look more silly than it should be even its FIM that we talking about. How about a mini adventure episode that our main character learn friendship lesson along the way instead of ..... friendship school teaching sitcom.

The movie gave me some bad sign about the direction that the staffs are going to take. It getting worse everytime i think about it.

I like Fame & Misfortune, it like the other side of the same coin to Slice of Life to me, nothing better than other, just different.

I dont like Daring Done for the same reason with Daring Do, they make RD look more stupid to advance the plot. They did it a little bit in Stranger but at least the episode is just amazing at everything else.

I like What About Discord, i didnt even think it a guilty pleasure kind of episode, i think it a good one.

The map called Spike for friendship mission just come from no where and too stupid, it the worst part of Triple Threat.

The map just call everyone now, it just undermined the mane 6 role of the show. If Starlight will be the next element, it make sense, but if it just because the staff like it then i will go back to my first sentence.

Just to be honest when Twilight became an Alicorn, Starlight was born as Twilight's other Half....much like when Roxas was Sora's Nobody...Make sense? Right?

That's a nice theory but I don't think that's the direction the show will go in.

This I agree with, though Sunset has had some improvements recently.

On the Starlight personality thing, I kinda do think she has one. Though of all criticisms against star, that she's boring is the one I get the most.

I feel like she's got this personable, slightly socially awkward veneer but right underneath it she's dry, sad and quite fearfully desperate.

That might just be how I read her though.

The "charecter developmet" everyone raved about has been little to no existent. The only real examples are basic like Twilight becoming a princess. Other than that, things have been inconsistent.

Later through the seasons we see Fluttershy tackle with stage fright, but hang on a minute, she never had stage fright in season 1. Remember how she interupted Twilight's speech in front of the whole town to add her own comment? She didn't even break a sweat.

What about Rainbow Dash? Apparently she's less cocky and more noble in the later seasons. Ugh, what? Seriously?

I'm okay with the show how it is, but people need to stop making things up and overhyping it. The charecters are intresting, not ground breaking; the animation is great, not revolutionary; the subjects are important, but not unique.

The show is awesome. Just don't higher expectations. :fluttershy:

This show has one of the subtler character developments ever shown in a cartoon, and it makes sense given the slice of life format. Yes sometimes it feels like the characters re-learn the same lessons over and over again, but rl works like that: people often makes the same mistakes more then once, because acting like that is part of their personality, part of what they are; you don't change who you are in the snap of a finger.

I don't expect to see Rainbow Dash ever stopping bragging about how awesome she is, or Rarity never being a drama queen for the most little thing anymore; what's most obvious after all this seasons however, is that they know there are times when acting like that is more detrimental for them, and those around them, then positive.

I think the song "Works in Progress" says it better: they are always learning on how being better, just like most people do ^^
