Alicorn OC's..are they really that bad?

They are mostly fanfic alicorns with not so ridiculously OP powers but usually leaders and capable ones. They have flaws, strengths, weaknesses, character, they are not godmoddy, they are not bullies or anything like that. They have a good color combination, they are artistically beautiful without having to be intricate to do that. They do not try to be badass and they handle their power carefully. They are not always immortal, they are great to be around. 

 

I generally don't hate alicorn OCs... but i just don't see the current point of having one.

On topic, Im not too crazy about Alicorn OC's b/c most of them are Mary-Sue/Gary-Stu's, however, it depends on how the character is "executed" in a story.   IMO, the execution is not the only thing I worry about, but the characters background and his/her resemblances (when i make OC's I always try to add a historical, science-fiction, etc. references).

Um, the only good alicorn OC, or ponysona, that I can think of is @ OC. 

Appreciate this though it's purely an opinon to most, I'm sure others wouldn't agree that my OC is a good alicorn OC. Though I have strived to create a good backstory for her thats based off my personal experiences and in between life happiness and struggles.

 

And being an animator myself, seeing a rainbowbarf OC of ANY kind whether they be alicorn or not, is a nightmare on the eyes, as well as noncreative in my opinion. This is why I tried to keep my alicorn design simple, to the point, but still have her own personality and color traits.

 

 

 

 

 

I love alicorn OCs, but only if they are done right, this includes design, personality, traits/talents, and storyline or backstory.

But I don't mind them. Long as they aren't overpowered or anything it's cool.

Im quite neutral in this case if people wanna make ridiculously op characters with less flaws than a pony with just wings or horns then let them. I personally like my weaknesses and i like even adding some extras while im at it.

   One of my first friends here was Lightning Bliss, an alicorn OC, I am very supportive of alicorn OCs, despite some bronies qualms for "Mary Sue" characters, then again the Mary Sue bronies say that about other ponysonas too, are we so desensitized by characters flaws that characters that seem perfect are now taboo? If you want a character too perfect watch Sofia the First, that is a clear example of character too perfect, for she is so generic and bereft of conflict that she is boring, ponysonas however have at least more care and development, whether they are unicorns, pegasi, earth ponies or alicorns. I want to have my own alicorn OC, but right now my only OC is a stallion pegasus pony, however I am waiting for the stigma against alicorn OCs to loosen, before I think about creating a new ponysona, yet if anyone wants to have a alicorn character, you have my support and I will defend your choice, from bronies that have a hard time accepting, especially from those who have an elitist attitude, I hope in time the brony fandom with be more appreciative of alicorn ponies, after all the British airborne had an alicorn on their unit patch, a testament of the majesty wings and a horn that makes friendship is magic.

Some are good. Some are bad. It really depends on how you write them.
 

I wrote a deliberately bad alicorn OC story recently.. highlighting some of the obvious issues which can be found in alicorn OC stories...the story I wrote was an obvious exaggeration of those issues... by the time I deleted it, the story had 9 thumbs up and 40 thumbs down.
 

The worst kinds are the ridiculous self-inserts where the character has no flaws (the character doesn't even need to be an alicorn..but alicorns are quite common), even though admittedly Alicorn the Alicorn is such a cocky SOB that could be considered a flaw in itself. I suppose that doesn't matter though in the alternate universe I created where every pony desires Alicorn.  

 

Took the story off FiMFiction, but a FiMFiction user did a well-done audio reading of the story if you want to hear it.

I'm in a Skype group with a few writers, and the running joke is coming up with the most idiotic OCs imaginable. Things like "the black and red Double Alicorn (she has two horns and two tails!) who is a brave survivor of severe autism."

 

Mine is named Epony D'arkness De-mane-Tia Raven Neigh, a ponified rip off of Ebony D'arkness Dementia Raven Way of the infamously shitty "My Immortal" Harry Potter fanfic.

I tend to roll my eyes when I see alicorn OCs. Generally it is an excuse to be overpowered, with both magic and flight.

Mary Sue is the first thing I think when I see the word, Alicorn.

 

Pegasus fly. Unicorns do Magic. Earth ponies do what they are told. Just pick one and join the rest of the herd.

The point is all these ponies are limited, Alicorns are not.

Alicorn OCs are a way of saying, "Look at Meeeeee! Look at Meeee!" It really says, "I'm a munchkin."

Giving flaws to an Alicorn is pointless, they are still OP.

 

If you are up to a challenge, play a canon pony race. Special ponies ride the short bus, you are NOT special.

I think if you're RPing with your OC, then it's courtesy not to be an alicorn, otherwise it's just cringeworthy when done really badly. But all OCs are subject to that.

 

My OC is black pegasus with a rainbow mane, and I know he's awful but I don't really care. There are meaningful reasons for why, but I could incorporate them another way without making a beeline for juvenile design choices, but I like to straddle the line between irony and sincerity, and anyone who gets to know me well enough knows that. So I never thought about changing him (or her, it seems to change at random) because in context it's actually kind of fitting.

As long as the character is justified,  it can be whatever it wants.

 

 

It's just a little harder to justify an alicorn.  They get a fair chance in my book.....just if they arent' any good,  no mercy is given.

 

If I haven't rambled on long enough,  then when one is planning ot make an alicorn.  just ask yourself "Why do they NEED to be an alicorn"

If you're making an Alicorn OC, the biggest question you should ask of yourself is "Would this character still work as a Pegasus or Unicorn?" If the answer is yes, don't make them an Alicorn.

 

Good writers prune their characters. If something does not add to a character's personality or overall theme, it's snipped away. Your character's personality should be informed by their backstory, and their behavioural traits should then be informed by their personality. (Behavioural traits being likes, dislikes, situational reactions and so forth.) In most Alicorn OC's I've seen, their being an Alicorn has been irrelevant to the character as a whole. Snip it away, and with a slightly altered backstory they'd still be nearly the same.

 

I've read a grand total of one good Alicorn concept so far. That character is Paige (Princess Charming) by AJ. She's not overpowered, being an Alicorn is actually a disadvantage to her, and the core foundation of her character relies on her being an Alicorn. (Her character would be completely different if that were removed.) AJ hasn't been active in the fandom for a while, and it's a shame because I'd love to see where Paige's story leads.

 

I've also read Lightning Bliss's backstory, since she's the most prominent Alicorn OC here, it seems. While I think it's creative, to me the character seemed much lovelier and more relatable as a simple Pegasus.

• Are close friends with princesses
• Demonology

My alicorn OC isn't at all related to either one of the Princesses, she was just a regular citizen, a born Pegasus from Cloudsdale who moved to Apploosa with her mother (a pegasus) and her step father (a mustang earth pony) ((I need to make a pic of her whole family lol)

 

Anyways she's detatched in relations to the princesses and twilight sparkle. When she ascended into an alicorn it was at a special location (yes I made it up so it could possible fit in the cannon of the show) where a war nearly exploded out of control between the dragon clans and the gryphons. Long story short just look up her story in the link on my sig. She ascended into an alicorn because she understood the true meaning of "loving your neighbor" and keeping the peace between them. She got married to a dragon, her husband Night Lights (NEW he has his own character page too in my sig) and ascended into an alicorn. She did meet Celestia in the alicorn dimension and explained to her the importance of her role as a alicorn of peace and unity. Her husband was also designated her personal protector or bodyguard.

 

Now as far goes as her being a "Princess" i figured that was only cannon for her to become one, not one alicorn in the show is NOT a princess... So i gritted my teeth and accepted that trat with her, but I wanted to keep her has hummble as possible. Which means she does her best to hide who she is amongst society, she does low diplomatic works that Celestia and Luna don't have as much time for, like being a diplomat between nations. In her case she serves as a keeper of the peace between dragons and gryphons when they need help keeping their treaties in order. And that's it.

 

In a way she does work with the magic of harmony, one must have peace in harmony I would think.

 

Point is I worked very hard to keep her down on the alicorn/princess thing. She does her duties in secret while trying to live a life in Ponyville with her dragon husband in normal society. When she's not traveling Equestria to do diplomat duties, she's at home making paintings while her husband in pony form, teaches about dragon lore as an extra credit class for Mrs. Cherliee's students.

 

Of course everypony here has an opinion, I even risked hearing an opinion about my OC from a member who rated OCs. According to him, she needed a little more developement in her 'quirks' (which I cleared up. I orginally kept them out cause I didn't want it to sound emo), but overall she had about 8 out of 10. So I guess I did something right for her

 

Edit: And as far goes as the OP issue... She's only been an alicorn for 3yrs and she's just mastered levitation, making her horn glow, oh and teleporting several miles in one sitting. She's still trying to figure out her magic, however her primary source of magic (being able to protect herself when threaten and making a space of peace around others) that all happends out of reflex, she can't control it nor really knows how to control it to start with. Point is, if I were to compare her to Twilight, she's very weak magic wise.

She's not a mary sue, I made sure of that. She's still a work in progress and shows up in stories I write. But she's great. Not a mary sue. Not a perfect princess. Okay?

I usually have a problem with people making ridiculously overpowered OC's and the like, but generally I don't really mind alicorn OC's.

I know what people are getting at, saying that it loses it's "specialness" but MLP is pretty special. So I don't mind.
