Rainbow Dash's Feminine Side

Shanks

Recommended Posts

Rainbow Dash has been an obvious tomboy since the start of the show and still is but even tomboys can have feminine side and we have seen some subtle hints of Rainbow Dash having one throughout the series the most recent episode Rarity Takes Manehattan it is considerably more obvious than usual. Rainbow Dash looked just as forward to seeing Hinny of The Hills as everypony else and even shouted "I loved it" after seeing it even if she did down play it afterwords with "its aight" and musicials are commonly viewed as a bit girly. It makes me wonder what other "girly" things Rainbow Dash might like but perhaps might not be willing to admit to or willing to try due to her own insecurities about maintaining her rep. I am not saying Rainbow Dash has to be girly filly like Rarity, but an episode about this could reinforce the lesson she learned in Read it and Weap about willing to try new things and that you should like what you like, be true to yourself and not worry about what other ponies think. We had an Applejack/Rarity episode back in season 1 where Applejack and Rarity butted heads over form vs function, maybe there could be an episode Rarity could get a bit pushy about getting Rainbow Dash to try something a bit "girly" and she tries it to shut her up and pretends to hate it, Applejack knows something is up and could act as a voice of reason which could present some interesting character development for all three of them.

I'm still waiting for an episode like this to happen - I love me some tsundere/feminine Dash

I THOUGHT it was complete bs she suddenly liked musicals.

i mean they pointed out it was a shock,

which they shouldn't have bothered and i wouldn't have said anything

It's funny when even Applejack acknowledges this

"It must be really good if even Rainbow Dash of all ponies likes it"

i'm offended that the inclincation is "now that rainbow likes reading she like glee now!"

I wouldn't exactly put the musical that Hinny Of The Hills is likely referencing in quite the same category as Glee but even if it was I can kind of forgive that a little because Rainbow Dash wasn't the main focus of the episode.

fine les miserable.

wicked.

the book of mormon.

hm what would that be called in pony land?  the book of Cadince?

Crap i just brained myself.

I didn't like how everyone converted over to be more like rarity because it was a rarity episode.

that's why it rubs me the wrong way.

hell it's why i liked jacks "you were pretty rotten line" cause that was apple jack totally in character.

"i'm not letting you off the hook that easy."

It was awesome.

Be careful what you wish for.

In all seriousness, I do like how Rainbow is becoming more comfortable with her feminine side.  It makes her more dynamic and interesting.

.....not sure how i feel about that LOL.

um....what am i looking at?  the expression seals it lol

I wouldn't want to see an RD with a feminine side. That's kinda what makes her Rainbow Dash. My 3 favorite characters are my favorites because they're similar to me: Fluttershy's shyness and timidness, Twilight's analytical mind and RD's tomboyishness. I'm the kind of person who really doesn't have a feminine side. I really don't do anything "girly," per se. Having RD have a feminine side, I feel, would make her unrelatable for someone like me. Especially since we're so far into the series, already. If they were gonna make her into a tomboy with a feminine side, they should've done it already, not change things this late in the game.

Actually, Apple Jack says that RD doesn't usually like musicals. She just liked (or was interested in) the one that was playing at the time. I don't think that changes anything about her. If someone who doesn't usually like action movies likes The Terminator, does that mean s/he suddenly likes all action movies? No. It just means s/he likes that ONE action movie. And if a work is really done well, I don't think you should let your disinterest in that genre prevent you from watching or liking a great work. That's how I saw RD in that episode. She's not a musical junkie. She just likes the one because it's a genuinely great show.

I've wanted an episode focused on Rarity and Rainbow Dash together for a long time, because I think any prolonged interaction between them would be gold and their relationship hasn't been touched on much. I like the idea of Rarity helping Dash realize that it's ok to appreciate girlier things, and Dash in turn teaching her to lighten up and roll with things even if they aren't quite proper in some way. Even though I like AJ, I'd prefer for an episode like that to have just the two of them.

RD's softer side is really played up in Polsky's episodes it seems. I think it adds more dimensions to her character that, I hope isn't too OOC like I've heard a few people say, because this season has really made me appreciate her more than I did in the past :D

i think rainbow and rarity wouldn't jell well.

rarity is a athelte with a hint of fan girl.

rarity is an artist.  if rainbow ended up liking what rarity did she'd go miseray on rarity LOL.

it would be uncomfortable.  rainbow dash bugging rarity for new fashion.  hum...... humm.... i might have to waffle on this one.

It wasn't just this episode though. She hid her liking of books in Read it and Weap, and in Ponyville Confidential she also had a pensive curiosity about spa treatments. Combined with a enjoyment for some musicals, and as Brony Curious puts it, Dashie does appear to have a repressed feminine nerdy side.  I hope DHX does act on this, as this would add dimension to Dashie's character.

Most diehard tomboys do like feminine things. It's just not a big part of their identity. Rainbow likes dresses, she likes musicals, she gets snuggly with Tank. She isn't masculine she's just the least feminine of the six, with applejack close behind.

Going from least to most feminine IMO.

RD > AJ > Twilight > Pinkie > Fluttershy > Rarity

I can't speak for you, but for me personally it is possible for a character to have one of two major differences from me and still be relatable to me. This is the case with me and Applejack, I relate to her the most of any of the characters with Twilight in a pretty close second and Rainbow Dash not far behind that this despite the fact that although I hate my job I do work hard often to the point of overdoing it. I have never worked on a farm and never been to the south (born and raised in Southern California). I am not saying Rainbow Dash has to become like another Rarity, but she has shown evidence of a slight suppressed feminie side with her brief curiosity about hooficure in Ponyville Confidential being another notable  example and I think that has a lot of potential for great character development for her. Even if it is explored it probably still not going to be as obvious as Rarity or even the others, if anything it might be closer to Applejacks approach to her own feminine side in other words although she is not a girly filly she is comfortable with the few "girly" aspects of her character even if it is a tad more subtle.

I think a fan needs to remember that what we want a character to be or what we enjoy about it isn't a set of handcuffs. The writers and staff need freedom to grow the character and sometimes growth is painful, but it's important. We may find we enjoy the change too.

One reason I love MLP and their world and the mane 6 is that there is so much depth, or dense storytelling as Digi says. I want Rainbow to be more than a tomboy or Rarity more than a fashionista or Twilight more than an egg head.

And that is what makes this such a great show is becaue the characters have such depth to them that they are often more than they appear to be. That is why the characters are so relatable and interesting to so many people because people are complicated and apparently now so are ponies. Rainbow Dash having a feminine side wouldn't change the fact that she is a tomboy anymore than her extremely nerdy fanfilly side has with her being an athlete.

I see her interest in musicals as actually pretty in character. She'd be all over the acrobatics and dancing of a Broadway-style production with her athleticism. Maybe the singing's a bit more of what Rainbow Dash would consider a "guilty pleasure", though...  ;)

No doubt Rainbow Dash is my favourite pony, although she is a tomboy, Rainbow does have a sensitive side and that includes femininity. Rainbow Dash is actually a well rounded pony, she is tough but not all too afraid to express an emotion, in "Hurricane Fluttershy", she almost looses it when she could not bring Fluttershy's spirits up, just to see that emotion on her face did get me sort of misty eyed, plus Rainbow does wear dresses like in the Grand Galloping Gala, the Canterlot wedding and Princess Twilight's coronation, even her human counterpart in Equestria Girls was wearing very feminine apparel. However, whether she emboldens her masculine or feminine sides, she is quite congeal especially with her friends and Scootaloo, not matter what gender, we do embrace our softer, gentler sides and it's a these moments where I truly admire Rainbow Dash, just because she is a tomboy does not mean she rebels against being a mare, she is happy and accepting the best of both worlds, in fact Rainbow Dash is nearly a good balance between masculinity and femininity.

I would rank Twilight ahead of Pinkie in femininity. After all, Twilight is a Princess. You can't get much more feminine than that!

Of course she has a feminine side, who remembers how she took scootaloo under her wing in 'sleepless in ponyville'

And yes, she clearly is a tomboy, and they shouldn't mess with that, but she can be allowed to show her other traits now and again, she is, after all, female like the others, so she can do/like what the others do.
