I remember MA Larson saying at Trotcon that Pinkie Pie is actually really smart and that she just chooses to be silly to be happy

I hate how school tried to teach me there was only one kind of smart....book-smart. Everyone is told to be a "Twilight Sparkle" and absorb factual information that others have written.

Not to criticise Twilight's character, but her friends show more dynamism, creativity, intuition and improvisational thinking. Pinkie Pie is not unintelligent. Ironically she is probably the sharpest of all of them. Twilight is more of a mediator and likes rules.

It's a shame though that schoolteachers (having made a career out of recycling old knowledge) always pull the chair out for the bookworms, and the shy, hyperactive or athletic ones are perceived as having less value even though they likely have the entrepreneurial flare to succeed.

She thinks outside the box, while most common people might not see her intelligence, she's smart at heart.

It's funny, because I used to reprove about 14 assignments per year. Then approving with max results, in less than 5 days of study.

I explained myself at the end.

"You lack enough personality to make the subject interesting to me" "You're not good enough at being at teacher"

You should have seen their faces, when I told them.

Pinkie pie might be an indigo pony, blowing away common minds. She's fourth and fifth dimension, if you catch my meaning :)

Naw, she's just a fool.

As others have pointed out in this here thread, Pinkie is pretty darn smart. If someone in real life could remember everything about everyone in their town, play like 10 instruments at the same time, and so on. We would probably describe this person as a genius.

So yes, Pinkie is a genius (possibly rivaling twilight).

in Luna Eclipsed Pinkie says that it can be really fun to be scared. It isn't that she's slow or anything like that. She just wants to have fun and she wants everyone else to have fun. So she acts like a doofus because it makes everypony laugh.

Unfortunately some of the writers don't seem to realize this so she often gets played off as an idiot. I don't think this is because she's hard to write either, I just don't think they understand her character. MMMystery on the Friendship Express is a good example of this.

She definitely is not mentally handicapped, let's put it that way. I more see her as just a care free person who does not see intellectual pursuits as very interesting. Her main interest is having fun and telling jokes, and that's all she needs in her life.

My answer to this question is heavily influenced by a lexical interpretation of the titular term 'intelligence' (an argument which is admittedly limited in scope but will hopefully serve to provide some contribution to the matter).

Terms such as 'intelligence" and 'intelligent' are Romanic in origin, deriving from the Latin verb intelligere. It is possible that this verb is a compound of a prefix in ('in') and the verb eligere ('to pluck out'), thereby connoting a sense of 'taking something out and putting it in'. As the term refers to the human thought process, the infinitive form can nowadays be translated as 'to understand' or 'to come to know'. This suggests that the base of the concept of 'intelligence' predominantly lies in an ability to understand. From what I have observed in the show thus far, Pinkie has exhibited an incredibly high level of understanding. As Pinkie appears to comprehend seemingly difficult concepts almost instantaneously, this suggests to me that she is conceivably one of the most intelligent ponies in the show.

Pinkie is highly talented, and highly skilled.

For those who think she lacks intelligence because of her oddball social skills:

Persistence does not equal low intelligence.  It means she's determined.  And for someone to have the amount of determination and persistence that she has, shows a strong will.

I don't see why being bubbly, fun and hyperactive should equate to less intelligence. Pinkie is sharp, alert and focused in ways others are not. Personality, emotion and intellect are often vastly differing matters and should not be categorized the same way. Pinkie may be different, but not less by any means.  :ooh:

Haha, that is really funny because there was one mlp comic I read, Luna said that Twilight was like Celestia when she was young, but Pinkie Pie was like Starswirl the bearded--they were both..different.(personality wise and maybe more), Lets be real, starswirl was more of an inventor than a fighter/magician

Pinkie may be 'loud', but hey, someone has to lighten up the mood.

Look at this guy. I mean I sometimes read a thesaurus to find smart ways to say stuff, but jeez, you must have written many essay papers in your day.

I don't think she's stupid, I just think she operates with vastly different parameters than most others. She's just looking for the fun in everything and she doesn't care much if something makes sense or not, but that doesn't make her any less intelligent than any of the other ponies. Her less-than-smart moments are mostly naiveté, which is not a sign of lesser intelligence but of incomplete knowledge, and is also something all of the other Mane 6 display from time to time.

...I don't know how I always end up sounding so pretentious, but I assume it's just a gift.

Well, since pinkie and I are like twins, especially in our way of thinking, I think I can say I know that she's smart. Really smart. She only uses her smartness in a different way. Her randomness is on a whole different level as normal randomness, achive that you need inteligence and creativity which she has both. I think that if you would be able to give pinkie an IQ she would be highly intelectual :)

I wouldn't say Pinkie's stupid. Most of the time she's just there to make comical jokes and be her funny, adorable self but when she's the main focus of an episode is where we can see her shine. Episodes like Party Of One, Pinkie Pride and that one where she meets Cranky (I forget the name) really show who she is. She can make intelligent decisions and even take care of babies, as shown in her episode with Mr and Mrs Cake's kids.

Please check out this awesome looking My Little Pony fan game being developed by Rikifive. Here's a link to It's post: https://mlpforums.com/topic/156773-my-little-pony-the-game/

Pinkie Pie is probably smarter than a lot of ponies. She just sees the world differently than most. Not to mention she is quite creative, which helps explain her randomness. And no matter what her IQ is, she is so much more than her level of intelligence. She's a funny, adorable, optimistic, and downright random party pony with a near-constant smile on her face. That's really all there is to it. :)
