When government wants to censor Internet

Bojo

Recommended Posts

Hi everypony! The thing is Mexican government will likely approve Telecom Bill, which allows them to censor any TV/Internet content that they consider it shouldn't be there. They will also remove intenert access in any regions within Mexico that they want. I know this situation already happened in some countries, and I remember when SOPA Bill striked some time ago, but then again, what can a person do to stop this? I'm not even an adult but I know tweeting stuff about this will not solve the whole problem. What would you do? Has your country experienced this thing too? What do you think about all of this? Thanks for reading and replying :)

Honestly, having been in Mexico quite recently, I would be very very surprised if their government had the resources of infrastructure to do this. I mean, in the region I visited last summer (the Baja area) outside the tourist areas the government had almost no presence, and my friends that work in Academia (the company) say that it has even less of a control in more rural areas. So this comes as quite a surprise to me.

Even if they pass the bill, Mexico just doesn't seem like the country to have the resources that can do these kind of things.

That's were you would be wrong; as the largest channel networks there are well known to be on the payroll of the Mexican government. As for blocking internet access, well they have already shown that they are more of capable of doing that when they cutoff internet access during protest against the current Mexican president a couple of years ago.

It's like, they're nowhere to be seen till' it's time to screw you over.

Sad to say but the American government and a few others are also trying to do the same thing. The internet is being used to expose a lot of corruption and those in power just can't have that. I dare these criminals to try, it may work in Mexico but I think it will backfire big time in America.

I doubt that they can do this.

Do they really need more expences? They are poor enough, no need to make it worse.

I have never experienced cenorship, but it is just silly after all.

If you screw over the internet, the internet will screw you over twice as hard.

The US government knows the people will not stand for this, hence they are trying to pursue TREATIES that would allow international bodies to block internet content for us.

So basically they want to censor content they think shouldn't be there, AKA stuff that points out their flaws. I'm pretty sure that goes against freedom of speech.

Also why block internet access in Mexico?

This is what happens when you don't own the wires...

Remember that the Internet has been created by the US government (the DARPA military organization), first for military purposes only, then for spying research facilities and scientists they connected, and then to spy the whole world. They only haven't foreseen that it can quickly go out of their control if made decentralized, as was the original plan. That's why they do what they can to centralize it as much as they can, by centralizing the infrastructure (fibers, star structure connections instead of DAGs, client-server model, Domain Name System etc.).

Why, do you think, they block peer-to-peer networks so hard? Because some people download their favorite music? No. It's because p2p networks are decentralized, and they have great potential for taking control off of their hands. And they know it.

Time to think about some alternatives for the government-controlled and ISP-owned networks. And there are some alternatives already, the most powerful of which are private wireless networks. Everyone can turn his own wireless router into an Access Point and broadcast the signal to other Access Points around, creating an emergent distributed network connecting all the people connected to it. And then they can use the very same protocols used by the Internet to communicate. It's enough if only one of the wireless nodes is connected to the Internet somewhere, making it a gateway, and everyone connected to the same network can use the Internet then.

If the US government tries to block the internet, I know that Anonymous would not stand for it. They should be expecting them, many of them, at DC. Anonymous is legion. They do not forgive. They do not forget. Expect them.

The government's attempts to try to censor the internet could come off as intruding, but with the internet being a powerful conglomerate and corruption is mostly happening on the internet, it needs to at least be decided before they do anything.

It ceases to be "tinfoil hat" when things like this exist in reality.

It is hard to call it conspiracy, when they are knocking on your door.

@,

I can't even read that

And by tinfoil, I mean that the last thread devolved into humans never landed on the Moon and World War 3 is imminent and 9/11 was an inside job

Our government already did this, but subtly, without letting anyone know. They censored our internet memes. There was a 20 minute loop video of our Prime Minister falling on the snow, there were other spoofs of the same man and some stuff with Obama and Putin. And more. Now you can't find any of these.

If I can read it on my tiny phone screen, you have no excuse not to be able to read the image. And as long as they have some evidence to back up those claims, I see no reason to off handedly dismiss them.

@,

"Thre Sapien Unit" is what I see

And their evidence is that people would instantly die from radiation upon leaving the Earth's atmosphere, which is insane by all accounts. Also claiming that NSA is the real space program

A large, deadly belt of radiation does infact surround the planet. And it is very deadly if not shielded against, and shielding against the belt is a costly measure.

Mexico has already been exposed to be one of the most corrupt countries in the world. This would not surprise me in the slightest. I have no other idea than to think about moving out of there if I was you, but there aren't many other options.

In US, our government has been raped so hard by corporations abusing their money and power and taking advantage of loopholes in the Constitution and the division of the people, but it at least still has some semblance of sanity left, as with the SOPA issue when it was struck down by the heavy pushback from the people. That's why our government is so hell-bent on spying and going to war. It's a guaranteed money-maker for the country with the highest military budget on Earth, and just as well the corporations want to spy on your Internet use and censor it directly all under the guise of "delivering targeted ads" and "protecting copyright". Unfortunately, they've kept this country too well distracted by buying the government into deregulating the media and disposing of honest reporting and diverse voices. Now the media is run by no one else but the power elite.

Unfortunately, many countries in the developed world are like this, I'd be hard-pressed to find one that isn't. The only other option is moving to a poor country that doesn't give a damn but what good would that do?

@,

I know that, but it won't kill you instantly. You'll get cancer and die, yeah, but not instantly

@, if you're not into conspiracy theories, you simply don't need to read about them. But honor the freedom of speech and access to information by other people. You may not like conspiracy theories, but this doesn't give you right to forbid other people discussing them or insulting them for doing that. Especially that many conspiracy theories ultimately turned out to be not only "theories" but true (when it was already too late do do anything about it), including the whole "NSA is spying us" thingy which even the mainstream media are discussing openly at present.

And I still don't know what does it all have to do with governments censoring the Internet? If you just wanted to shout out your dislike of conspiracy theories, then you could start your own thread about that.
