Selfies: What Do You Think Of Them?

Selfies are okay as long as they don't get out of hand and turn into a battle of 'who can fish for the most compliments and get the most likes on their picture' sort of deal. I don't mind em, but once people start saying "Ohhh my god, take a selfie with me, so I can post it on instagram!" I say no. I don't do selfies.

*clearly doesn't know who that user is*

and most people don't, some on the other hand...I'm not even sure if excessive is an adequate word.

*eyes squint intensely*

While I personally feel selfies almost always look like horseapples, I do agree it's for an ego boost.

----

I admit what I say is harsh, but the truth isn't always pretty or nice. I ain't gonna sugarcoat a rebuke when one posts vain, pretentious nonsense that's just begging to be set alight. I'm earnestly sorry if jimmies got rustled and applecarts overturned in the process. As they say, wake up and smell the roses 'n all.

At the end of the day, to each their own. Just be aware of when too much is really, glaringly too much. 4chan would have an absolute field day.

OOH KILL EM

I just now got around to reading this. We might butt heads on this topic, but there's no need to apologize for your opinions. They are the only thing that no one can take away from you.

If you think selfies are terrible and those that post them should feel terrible that's alright. We can agree to disagree. No hard feelings right?

And let's leave 4chan out of this, as it is the toilet bowl of the internet

To me, it seems like the only people who don't like em are the ones who find themselves unattractive and lack confidence. ;)

I like them. I usually get 20 likes or more on each one so I assume they like them too. If you got it, flaunt it. If not... sucks for you.

Oooooh that was brutally honest eh?

Two reasons to be against "selfies", as they're called:

1. Life is meant to be lived and experienced. It's not a series of photography sessions starring you in the title role, taken for the purpose of gaining attention and admiration from others. It's time to get over yourself.

2. Supply and demand. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Youtube have exponentially multiplied the amount of video and photographs in the world without increasing the demand exponentially. Which has made film and photography increasingly worthless. One big solution to this problem is to accept that some images just are not supposed to go on the internet. As Don Hertzfeldt of "Rejected" fame commented: "If you've only seen a film downgraded on the Internet or some strange miniature device, in many ways you haven't really seen it yet. Youtube is great for home videos of your cat falling off the roof, but it is not really the proper setting for "cinema"… Movies are meant to be seen in the dark, hopefully with an audience, and with your undivided attention; this last one is non-negotiable."

I don't mind it when I see epic selfies. Ones with the president, ones in space, something very important in the person's life..

But it's pretty stupid to see one on a random day with them saying "just ate cereal". Like damn.

Though, I wouldn't mind taking one if I reached a big goal. If my dream was to perform on some well known stage, I'd selfie with the audience in the background, and treasure it.

Other than that, I'm a hipster who's sick of this old trend.

Seconded. A selfie should have a real purpose, like this one:

I find stupid selfies where the sole purpose is vanity, like many stated here "OMG, Im sooooo ogly", and take like 5 of those a day. I hate attention whores. Hell, I saw one of those typical selfies in the bathroom, with a notable difference....... the girl had her feet inside the toilet  :eww:

Those with something interesting in the background are cool though

Annoying. Who actually takes pictures of themselves everyday other than to impress friends? Most of them I see are either making a funny face, "duck face" that girls do a lot (that's the worst), or they're showing their muscles off. I rarely take pictures of myself, just to keep updated with my current style of clothing before I go out somewhere so I don't keep my old photos in case I need to post a current photo of myself somewhere.

If someone likes to take pictures of themselves, that's cool with me. Wish I was confident enough in my appearance to do so.

I don't take selfies. If you want to take selfies go ahead and do what you want. I don't hate them I just don't like taking them.

The only one i took was to see if i could spot something dirty in my teeth. I don't dislike selfies or the self-absorbed people who often take them though. I just think taking many pictures trying to pose yourself for a perfect picture is a waste of time.

All we do on the campus is taking selfies. You have like 50 to 70 notifications by the end of the day.  :P

A point Britney Spears has made is that selfies have almost completely replaced autographs. She has not recieved one autograph request in the past year, yet she gets so many people wanting to take selfies with her. I think selfies are good in the respect that they are better than autographs.

You could also want to take a selfie when you're touring something nice like the Grand Canyon.

Or if your in a nice suit/dress that you rarely wear.

However, taking hundreds of selfies over small things is pretty pointless.

I think it's hilarious when people take selfies in class.

Like in my pre cal class this one chick in the front desk in the corner took a duck face selfie while the teacher had her back turned writing math stuff on the board. Me and one other girl were the only ones to notice her, so we like made eye contact and just started laughing about it.

I don't take selfies, but I don't mind it. It kind of makes me sad when people think that taking selfies is such a bad thing. Why? If people feel good about their appearance and want to take a pretty picture of themselves, why not? If they have the self-esteem to do so, good for them. Why mock someone who is confident in their appearance? I wish I had that kind of self-esteem. Hell, even if the pictures are stupid (duck faces), that doesn't mean it's right to laugh at them.

I think they're silly, with all the duck faces and pretty girls saying "I'm ugly!", it's annoying and shouting "attention whore" at everyone viewing. Take those two cons out, and you can actually have a pretty decent profile picture worthy photo. ^^

tbh, I can't stand it...even the word...

the dreaded word...

Listen...

This is a Selphie...

Not This...

selfie-taking-picture1.jpg

(10 points to those who actually GET that reference)

But seriously...

I just hate the whole aspect of it...and here's why.

I feel like people are treating the internet differently nowadays.

It's become infested with really arrogant super popular ego tripping maniacs

who want nothing more than to make themselves even more popular, and put down others.

It's like, at one point in time, the internet was mainly geeks and workers...

We had creative people, intelligent minds, and those who wanted to share "the future" with others.

But as OP said, society has become so self absorbed that they're constantly seeking attention via "selfies" and "snapchats"...

And on that notion...has anyone noticed no one seems to care about privacy anymore?

they're more than happy to post pictures of themselves on facebook/twitter/youtube without a single thought in the world.

I personally like to keep my life personal.

My music persona is an entity on its own...

but me myself? I'm kind of a recluse.

Now I'm not condoning reclusiveness/antisocialism, but privacy is a very valuable and priceless thing...

I find it weird for instance, that apple was sued over a BIG controversy, that it was taking people's

data/information and selling it to 3rd parties and government organizations without letting the user know.

But for some reason, people forgot about that and rushed out to buy the iphone6.

I hate the fact that this popular mentality...this "yoloswag" out of control, childish behaviour, has become a trademark of the current generation. The only thing I can really compare it to, was the hippie movement in the 60's...I just don't understand how this stuff catches on...I mean, it's like..."oh yeah, selfies/snapchats are so cool, I'mma upload all this personal stuff online, and get other people's POV on it." it's like...why?...what is the need? I can understand if you're an artist/musician/businessperson and you're trying to get your name/work out there...but just every day personal stuff? why should that EVER be accessible to anyone who passes you by?

So long story short...no...I don't like them...in fact, I very much dislike them...

If you enjoy them? be my guest to enjoy them...you have that right, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise...

But in my humble opinion?...no. just...no.
