  1. The feeling of nostalgia isn't that odd. A lot of the big songs from the show are pastiches of broadway showtunes. The ones I notice tend to be Sondheim, but I'm sure they're not the only ones. Plus Daniel Ingram is an accomplished composer, so provoking an emotional response is something he's striving for. I was listening to some of the songs last night, and I hadn't noticed how uplifting Winter Wrap Up is before.
  2. You also might be interested to know that the webcomic Something Positive is currently running an arc about real-life heroes. The comic's resident buttmonkey is experiencing a sort of redemption by trying to be a hero (sorry, no linky as the comic occasionaly has NSFW content, but I'm sure you can do a search!)
  3. Hah! That's a very clever and inventive solution
  4. Thanks for the friend add. And I'd choose Shapechanging for my superpower. (See! I read it!)

  5. That may pass as "refined" in the colonies, but thhis is refined and elegant gentlemans attire: I think the word you are looking for is "classic"
  6. Work: Business casual - trousers, shirt, maybe a tie Home: casual - jogging bottoms and t-shirt Going out: casual or cyber/punk/goth depending on the venue
  7. Easy decision - No. Those conditions are terrible. I'd love to live in Equestria, but to lose everyone I love (and everyone who loves me), and everything I care about, and not even get to be a pony? That would suck. Let me know when you've got a two-way stable (haha) portal up and running
  8. The whole idea amused me. In fasntasy fiction we see that the oldest (and therefore largest) dragons have the largest hordes. Normally it is assumed that they accumulate more treasure as they mature/grow. Buit to see this cause/effect turned on its head was a clever idea. It doesn't contradict the fiction it is inspired by, and makes a twisted kind of sense. Also reminded me of Warhammer Orcs, where the most successful leaders grow in size, and the largest orcs tend to be more successful
  9. I have to chuckle when I overhear people talking about the Twilight films thanks to MLP.
  10. Those crazy Romans! Check out Elgabalus/Heliogabalus too! So decadent and depraved he was assassinated while he was just 18 years old! Although you might be interested to know he officially replaced Jupiter, the head of the Roman gods, with Sol Invictus (the sun god - sounds like anypony we know?)
  11. I can't speak for the group in question, but a lot of art groups I watch on DA have rules that only 100% original artwork is accepted. Anything involving manipulating existing images is rejected. So the the screen grab in the first pic above, and the dream bubble in the second, would be enough ti reject it, no matter how good the rest of the work is.
  12. Not many of us oldies about! And I think you can guess my favourite colour from my avatar I'm the other Other. I identify as Genderfluid. Google it if you care, but it might not make much sense if you are not familiar with the diffrences between sex, gender identity, and gender expression.
  13. I'd prefer that the aprehension of criminals was left to professionals. But if these heroes want to fight the other problems of society (littering or illiteracy for example) or just raise awareness of things (like the dangers of date-rape drugs in nightclubs, or how to stay safe on the streets at night) then I'm all for them.
  14. "War is merely the continuation of policy by other means." - Carl von Clausewitz Wars start for a few reasons. Land and/or resources are the main one. But sometimes they are an attempt to impose your country's rule over another (whether that's bringing democracy to the Iraqis or stopping the Vietnamese becoming communist); or even a way to distract an unhappy population from other matters closer to home (like invading the Falklands). Religion is never the reason for war. It is often the excuse though. The Age of Enlightenment begs to differ. Historically at least, Western organised religion has been opposed to education of the masses (no pun intended).
  15. With Spike and the Diamond Dogs we almost have those already! They'd fit in nicely. Creatures made of elements (like the Windigoes and Timber Wolves*) have already appeared. A smokey, fiery balrog wouldn't be a stretch. Although we'd have to watch out for "concerned parents" worried about "satantic influences" Two Appleoosian Earth Ponies named Valentine and Earl save the day
  16. So far it looks like Equestria is populated by characters from the D&D Monster Manual! I think trolls seem quite likely to appear. But all the other missing creatures of myth seem to be human hybrids, or not offering anything new compared to what has been seem before. Harpies, satyrs, fauns, giants, ogres, and animated skeletons all fail at the first. And lizardfolk, hippogriffs, goblins, etc fail at the second. Hmm, what about landsharks? Or is that too close to Quarry Eels?
  17. Thank you! I can't believe it took 50 posts. I know she's had her own episode, and got namechecked or cameo'ed, but she needs more airtime, she's awesome. And I can't wait for the toy!
  18. Come a Little Bit Closer in my pants (Sung by Jay & The Americans)
  19. It would be interesting to know if the people that thought that way found Rainbow Dash annoying for always trying to get into the Wonderbolts
  20. I'm of the opinion she's currently the third most powerful pony in the show (after Celestia and Luna). Celestia was surprised by her raw ability when she did her entrance exam* and we've see her perform a surprising number of magical effects. She could possibly be as powerful as Luna (or NMM) if she could get over her neuroses and self doubt. And obviously get more practice and experience. I quite like the fan theory that Celestia has spotted Twi's potential to become a new NMM, and instigated the Friendship project to keep her from going over to the dark side. *=An even funnier fan theory I've read suggests the dragon egg test is a Kobyashi Maru designed to test a students response to an impossbile task, and that actually hatching the egg wasn't expected. Not sure I buy it, but its amusing.
  21. Cheers dude. Its easy to forget most groups have an overlooked sane majority when the only ones you seen in mainstream media are the crazy extremeists. (Just like with Christians, Muslims, bronies, furries, anime fans, etc, etc)
  22. Seconding The Discworld series and Skullduggery Pleasant. I also enjoyed: Phillip Reeve's Mortal Engines series Edgar Rice Burroughs's John Carter of Mars books I used to enjoy Laurel K Hamilton's Anita Blake series before they became all-smut all-the-time
  23. Fox News (and factions within the right-wing media) make a living from conflict, hatred and demonisation of "the other". MLP (and bronies, pegasisters, etc) is based around love, tolerance, and peaceful conflict resolution. Of course we're their enemy
