web YouTube comments: getting worse since the Google+ update?

The fact that comments are linked on YouTube now, could be part of the reason. Flamewars are easier to spot now, as all answers are listed beneath the comment they're responding to, and not mixed along with the rest of the comments.

It seems to me that Reddit also has pretty mature comments in general. When bronies are the topic, for example, you may see a lot of insults and profanity, but take a look at how these people handle it:

Comments on YouTube were once fun. They were pretty good when only new thing by YouTube was "best comment" option (for lolz, those were epic most times XD) and there was an option to give thumb up or down to comments. Now they are... messy, full of spam or worthless unfunny jokes. I don't remember when it started, but I honestly miss old YouTube. Recently everything - design, comments, even rating system is just getting worse. Anyone still remember 5 stars rating?

I think it definitely has. Literally every single music video I view has the top comments saying how much the band/song sucks. I think the dislike button actually doesn't work as well which only makes it worse.

YouTube's comment section is, and has always been, a vile cesspool of venom and shit.

 

One of things I love about the comments is whenever a Brony comments and their comment gets bombarded with comments from Anti-Bronies for something as simple as a Pony avatar or Username...

Remember when Youtube was a fun place for everyone where small channels meant a lot, you could leave video responses to other videos, the layout was super simple and the comment section was a fun place to be?

 

 

Yes, the comments have gotten dumber over the last three years and Youtube keeps changing everything to make it extremely annoying to the users.

 

Also having Google+ integrated into the system doesn't help.

Well two things:

 

1: Yes because people are now less restricted to post whatever they want.

 

2: Not as much as you might think. Highly negative and terrible comments end up, ironically, becoming more "popular" as more people respond to it. The way Youtube works now, most popular comments hit the top of the list, so you end up with all the shit piled on top.

 

This is why people like PewDiePie, NerdCubed and TotalBiscuit turned their comments off.

   I have been with YouTube since 2006, it has always been a place where fools rush in, so I don't leave comments except on pony videos, however it seems to be getting worse, I have grown weary of the constant bickering and heated debates, as if people are trying to win a prize. The comments section has changed a lot on YouTube over the years, at one time you could vote down a remark and it would be removed, yet even if the comment section on YouTube was upgraded, there are other websites with equal quarreling, and wrath, it's not the internet's fault, it is people, the public has gotten shallower and more wicked by the day, so I just go to websites for facts and leave, but MLP forums does give me a major break from the unscrupulous cretins out there, as well as other brony sites, the feeling of respect we see here, is so liberating from the torrent of modern life, especially on the internet, perhaps someday we can comment on YouTube without some troll lying in wait.

It is a combination of the new google+ "upboat" system (the same one that led to reddit being filled with shit) and that the internet has become widely more accessible to the public. And remember, the public is stupid. So the more you have the public interacting with something, the more stupid it becomes.

I think they've gotten much worse as a whole.

 

The only positive addition I can itemize is the fact that replies are added to a chain of comments, so I can just view them all at once instead of hitting "see reply" a zillion times. With that, I can view more comments in total.

 

Other than that, it's trash. Comments can't be downvoted, so a giant, unitelligent, maundering wall of text gets way too many upvotes. The Flag for Spam feature doesn't work as well as it used to (I know there were intelligent and insightful comments that would unfairly get that, but it was good for the most part). There are some good comments here and there as well as some good conversations to have, but now it's just a place to spout some imbecilic drivel and get 100 undeserved upvotes. I have a hard time not getting distracted by some posts that are purely moronic, and make me want to yell at them for being so boneheaded more than anything else.

 

Makes me lose some faith in humanity, really.

To be fair, I leave youtube comments of praising videos I like, such as the "My Little Disney videos" by Daga Yemar, defending what I believe is misunderstood, like in "What's with the Princess Hate?" by League of Super Critics and answer a series of questions the uploader would end their videos with, like Dr. Wolf and his MLP Analysis videos

 

My main complaint since the Google+ update is that there's no easy list that keeps track of all the videos I've left a comment/reply on. I like to be able to easily get back to the comments I left, when I want to show someone or to refresh my memory of that day. At least here on MLPForums, there's a "My Content" button to get me easily back to my posts. There should be a private "Comments I Made" list, 'cause it's hard to recall which videos you've commented on.

I avoid the YT community like the plague for that very reason. I usually just sit back and watch, although some are quite funny and not so hurtful, then there are those that are.

I haven't heard of them, the only ones I keep up to date with are LAHWF and QuietAssassins. I'm also a fan of soundboard phone prank calls.
