@@Jeric, to be fair, I think most all Americans "know" all 50 states (if you say 'Iowa', I know its a state, even though it's one of the ones I couldn't name ), it's just that since elementary school, it isn't exactly something that's requisite for life.

Well, ever since I was 9, I've loved geography.  Along with memorizing all 50 states, I memorized the nations of South America and the former republics of the Soviet Union IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER!!!  This was for my own personal amusement.  Once I reached the age of 11, we as a class had to "learn the states alphabetically via song."  I chose to prove to my instructor that I already knew and refused to sing that stupid song by writing them all down in less than a minute.  She was pissed, but accepted it.
