Tommy Oliver Rage Quits the Fandom

Moved to Elsewhere

Recommended Posts

What i don't get is, if he really wants to seperate himself from this fandom and be at peace now, why was he so stupid and made this vid?

The backlash against him will now be bigger then before and alot of bronies will be at his throat, especially those guys from 4chan. This was just a stupid move from him, not only for his credibility, but also for his future as a reviewer and in general on the internet.

I actually sat through all 1:45:00 of Drowning in Horshoes Finale were he also rage quit the fandom. Apparently the two of them are in the same clique of friends.

I could do without all of the soap opera bickering and shenanigans within a large section of the youtube community. Their nothing but a bunch of narcissistic prima donnas. They should be doing what their doing because they enjoy it, not because they see dollar signs, and if they truly no longer enjoy the show it's probably best that they quit.

Sorry to bring this up but if you really watched the whole thing and you think he rage quit then you missed the entire point. His reviews were PARODY. He flat out said so and I could tell they were early on.

Where exactly was all the "love and tolerate" when that was going on?

It was either or both a common response to trolls or anti-Bronies and/or an idealized vision of Brony community in which we have no care for those who are anti-Brony and more generally very accepting as a fandom (in case of latter clearly failed).

He probably wants to garner attention so that people will feel sorry for him, which is why he acted in such a deplorable manner.

Some people love to feed off of negative attention/hate...DSP anyone?

His move to act like a martyr will fire back badly. He has no idea what he just created and i will promise you, that he will really regret it.

Maybe "rage quit" was the wrong wording. He still through the entire fandom under the bus like Tommy did, only in a much more flamboyant way.

The crazy thing is that he wants to go to the Steven Universe fandom next. Not exactly a group welcoming to bronies or former bronies...

Also, yeah, the thing a lot of people forget on the internet is that everyone can see what you do. You can't just whitewash a post and pretend it never happened, not without changing all your accounts or some crap. To be perfectly honest, I was never really big into the analysis community anyway—I just watch for the ponies and chat with some friends—but this wasn't really the brightest thing he could've done. Certainly, there are some legitimate criticisms of the show and fanbase (let's not pretend otherwise), but one can leave gracefully and not stir up drama.

Oh well. Not my problem. I'm just going to keep staring at your trippy avatar...

Hmmm don't follow this guy, try not to pay attention to popular brony personalities, REALLY don't like analysis community at all, but listening to his video I agree with a TON of his points.  The fandom has drastically changed since '11 and not sure it has been for the better. It's really easy to feel soured by the changes in the show and also just how the fandom operates. I consider myself a pretty hardcore brony but just feel like its hard to feel like the community supports one another or that we have a lot of love left ....I think Tommy did pick up that the diagnosis community is its own cancerous part of the fandom. I don't know many in that part of the fanbase that aren't attention whores, gather a ton of criticism themselves, or that don't eventually turn on their audience.  The fact that this is news and has a multi-page forum post somewhat validates how quick people are to grab their pitchforks if they disagree with an opinion that's critical of the fanbase and how quick people are to kick them out.

Another brony leaving is just another drop in the bucket, but that pail is getting pretty full these days.

I couldn't care less about the SU fandom, so whatever.

Don't get me wrong, i am also critical of the show and think that it has it's flaws (Appleloosas most wanted anybody?) But it's the wrong way to be a doomsayer and then call the fandom mindless sheep. He did that already in his Cutie Map review and this just puts the icing on the cake. Everyone will remember the name tommy oliver and most people will recognize his voice, so if he dosen't want to be find out, he should give himself a new name and write his reviews in blogs.

Here's my thoughts on this: I disagree often with Tommy in his videos and sometimes he's even rubbed me the wrong way. Regardless though, I do not seriously hate him or even dislike him. In fact, I have a ton of respect for all of the work he's put into his craft.

In this video, he speaks the freakin truth. I'm not sure what percentage of the fandom is actually like this, in that they get butthurt over dissenting opinions or negative opinions of the show, but it's certainly our there.

Every time I go to Equestria Daily and see the featured reviews, all I see are a pile of "these people are stupid" "these people ruin the fandom" "all of these guys suck except Silver Quill & Dr. Wolf" type comments.

I myself walked on eggshells writing my Appleoosa's Most Wanted Review, because I knew people would get pissed about even a hint of a negative opinion. Like Tommy said, it doesn't matter how hard you try to pander to an audience and dumb yourself down, people are still going to hate you for it. Hate you!

I have people on Fimfiction calling me retarded and creepy because I satirized rabid fanboy shipping. I can't have fun in my reviews without people going crazy!

Point is, I get where Tommy's coming from and respect his decision to step away. I think he's perhaps a little cynical, but then again he has a far bigger audience than I do. At least I haven't encountered anyone with the gall to send their hatemail to me personally.

It's a varient of Ad Hominem, which is attacking somebody's character as a means of dismissing their argument, and that's exactly what you are engaging in.

There's every reason to call his character into question. If you're going to completely lose interest in something, then your reason had better be good. If he lost interest solely because of the quality, then we wouldn't have this discussion. But the second he applied the fandom as another reason why, then you're saying, "You're why I don't like the show." That's pure spite. His whole attitude toward the fandom and the show altogether is open for criticism, because his attitude toward the fandom is horrific.

Furthermore, stereotypes are not the same as confirmation bias, and furtherfurthermore, he based everything in the video on his own personal experiences with the fandom. It is not a stereotype, it is an anecdote.

It doesn't matter if it's anecdotal. It's still stereotyping. Why? Because he blanketed the entire fandom under one brush. The fandom is eclectic with varying opinions. Anyone who reviews this fandom objectively won't pull the shit that he did in that video.

That's subjective to be honest, there were a lot of people that liked the new direction. So you're saying he should have carried on his reviews without the criticisms? Just blinding giving the people who watched his videos what they wanted?

  1. Just because people liked the direction doesn't make it good. The extremely sarcastic approach tells the people who watch the video, "You can't handle it when I criticize something in an episode." It's not just valid criticism. It's all criticism. It's downright demeaning to your audience.
  2. Everything you make is subject to criticism. But that doesn't mean you have to listen to all of it and take every single bit of advice. Not all advice is sound; sometimes it's best to take dumb critiques with a grain of salt.

It's literally just an opinion. He has every right to assume this fandom's full of twats. And meeting too many can ruin the fandom for you >.< because you'll end up thinking "oh God why am I associating myself with this"

His opinions fine. I can't really disagree with the idea the fandoms borderline cancerous at the best of tubes l times.

Just because it's an "opinion" doesn't make it okay. Opinions can be ignorant. They can lack plenty of logic. Opinions can be wrong. Tommy Oliver's opinions are wrong because he's spewing bigotry. He has the "right" to assume it, but in consequence, others have the right to call him out for his overall BS.

Anyone who thinks the fandom will ruin your enjoyment is fooling themselves. It doesn't matter which fandom you're in. There's always going to be crazies. So what will he do next once he sees plenty of crazies in other fandoms like Steven Universe infiltrating his messages, whine and cry there, too, like he did here? They didn't ruin his enjoyment. He ruined his enjoyment and shifted the blame.

One thing to remember is that a fandom rarely keeps all of it's members over time. Give a few years some things may change which does not set well with some people; and they leave. I've seen it happen in the Spyro fandom, in the racing fandom, and even happen the furry community. A property rarely stays the same, and the same applies to MLP. It will not conform to everyone's tastes, and that's fine. Human have varying degrees of similar and different likes, and that's just one thing that makes us human.

My main problem with Tommy isn't the departure; nor even some of the arguments he makes. He is correct that there are some within the fan base that are a bit sensitive about what they like, and can get a tad too defensive. However, that's pretty in any fandom out there. Again, I saw it with the Spyro fandom too. You're not gonna escape that.

My main issue is the condescending tone he makes, and the general blanket statements he makes in regards to bronies. We're not a hive mind, not everyone is ultra defensive, and not everyone is going to hold the same opinion regarding an episode. I enjoyed listening to him; even though I disagreed with him on a large number of points over varying episodes.

Someone brought up Jerry Peet, and I think he is a good example of someone who can be critical of something without sounding nitpicky or elitist. Of course that's my own opinion, so take it for what it's worth.

My point still stands; you don't have to be condescending towards a fan base. You may have some issues here and there, but there is no excuse to paint a general negative picture like that.

That is the weirdest thing about this for me. He claims the fandom basically is nothing more that a giant hug box/echo chamber anymore, cites his detractors, and yet this rant has an overwhelming amount of upvotes and understanding 'fare thee well's' in the comments. You would think if he was accurate the numbers would reflect that.

Not to invalidate his opinion, but I think he was managing his channel to the exception/vocal minority.

I'm critical to a point, but I usually go in watching for pure enjoyment and I can take differing opinions without feeling like I've been personally slighted. For example, I don't mind Appleoosa's Most Wanted at all. Come at me, Hypno.

Actually, at least let me finish my reply before you hypnotize me >.>

But yeah, you touched on the problem. He's a known reviewer from our community—he's not gonna be able to get away from that without changing quite a bit of his format. I don't have my crystal ball out, but I daresay it'll be interesting to see just how thing progress.

Of course, I say that, but I really mean "It'll be interesting to hear from the pair of friends who watched him" :P

The fandom is slowly dying out. It's not as hyped as it used to. There is no reaction from anyone when it is referenced in the movie or by any famous person. Brony phenomena was ridden ot the ground along with 2 documentaries. Old analytists and reviewers no longer see any profit with videos about MLP because at this point is like doing AVGN shtick. It's overdone. KP and Silver Quill will soon follow Horseshoes, Digibrony, Tommy Oliver and Gibbontake. Any also seem to lose interest.

It all went downhill after Princesshood of Twilight was declared and no amount of background ponies pandering or ressurecting the old characters from S1 will repair that. Not even Octavia/Vinyl or Derpy talking.

It will be over after S6 and the show will be canceled after long hiatus of S7

Another "Fandom doomsday" post. Fandom has been through multiple phases of death paranoia (such as people fearing end of fandom shortly before season 2); clearly none of them happened. I believe Brony fandom will continue to exist for a very long time even after official end of MLPFIM.

Don't walk on eggshells. If something honestly is an issue with an episode, point it out. Yes you are going to get some viewers that scream because of what Tommy talks about in his message. Just don't sacrifice artistisic or intellectual integrity because of a few less thoughtful comments may arise.

As an aside, even if you dialed the critique up a notch on Appleoosa, the rest of your body of work shows you are fair which balances things out. Also, it looks like you are having fun with it, (or you are a damn fine actor). Either way good job. XD

Really? Because a few weeks ago I saw a big reaction by EQD over Robert Downy Jr. Referencing ponies.

Also, this happens with every fandom. After a few years, people tend to get sick of a fandom, but that doesn't mean it will die out completely. The Star Trek fandom is still around after all these years. Heck, look at Pokemon. The series got a backlash in the early 2000s and even today, they still have a large fandom.

The fandom dying? I'm still pretty new and it sure doesn't seem dead to me, in fact aren't I proof that there is still life here? A fandom can really only be dead if no new people join and all the old fans all leave.

Should i get the bunker? Because i cramed it out alot of tiimes in the last 4 years and the fandom still stands.

It still lived after Derpygate, it still lived after Alicorn Twilight, it still lived after Equestria Girls, etc.

Those doomposts are nothing worth anymore.

It never existed. People just use it as a stupid defense, after they don't get their way, and expect everyone to fall into their stupid ideals of what a fan should be.

No, I think it did exist at some point---back when the fandom was still fairly small and the show had not yet hit its stride.
