movies/tv The Worst Video Game Movies

As most of you know, video game movies are a sad affair. Despite the countless amount of great games made over the years, anytime these are translate to a movie, it tends to end horribly for everyone involved. Could be because a long game doesn't translate to a movie of much shorter length, could be greedy movie producers that do not have a clue on what made the game good, could be a dark lord that has pledged to ruin all video game based films. The last one is the least likely.

With so many terrible movies to choose from and rightfully deserving of the hatred they get, let's pick and choose some and poke them with a stick! What are the worst video game based films to you?

Mine are probably the live action Resident Evil films, all of them. These movies are simply a mockery of the games. While the games don't necessarily have the best acting and in the case of the first game it is laughable, the games still manage to invoke an eerie atmosphere with a haunting score, great scenery and making the zombies seem terrifying despite their slowness. The movies instead go for action, with guns and explosions being at the forefront. The only hint of them 'trying' is in the first film but by the end it is complete nonsense. So glad this series is finally over. Hopefully.

The Resident Evil movies, especially for the fact that they won't stop making them, nor does it have the entertainment value of "so bad it's good"(like Street Fighter or Mario), it's just bad and boring

Same goes for the Assassin's Creed movie, especially considering they chose to focus instead on Modern Day stuff, the things every one hates

I think I'd be hard pressed to think of a video game movie that wasn't offensively bad

Super Mario Bros. Do I need to even say why...?

Mario Bros is a good example of a movie where the director completely missed the point of the source material like Final Fantasy Spirits Within. I admit making adaptions can be really hard especially with VERY basic story of monster kidnaps princess and plumber has to go save her but you'd think straying that far away from the story doesnt even make it "Mario" anymore.

Then you have other movies which while stayed pretty accurate just sucked on a technical level like Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and Silent Hill.

I will defend the 1994 Street Fighter movie as that is one that should not be on here at all. That film did some things right. Like tons of action, fair screen time to all the characters, keeping reasonably faithful to the story,  and getting big hollywood names attached to it in Jean Claud Van Damme and Raul Julia, the former having a blast in the role of Guile, and the latter putting on a fantastic performance as M.Bison. For a 1990's video game movie, it did okay.

On the other hand, Street Fighter: Legend of Chun Li, has every reason to be here. Lousy choreography. Cheap CGI for a mid 00s film. Characters randomly introduced and then forgotten about. And changing M.Bison to a suit and tie corporate villain? Add in a bit more camp and you could toss this onto the Sci-Fi channel.

Even though I do like it from a certain perspective, the Super Mario Bros. movie completely ignored the source material and decided to go in a direction that could be described as taking Mario as a brand and turning it into an alternate reality that isn't Mario. Only the character names are consistent.

The Super Mario Bros. movie. That is all.Damn it, you beat me to the punch.

Third. In fact, most video game movies that isn't Wreck-it Ralph. While everyone just wanted to see it for famous video game character cameos, the viewers then got drawn into the original story and characters.

Scott Pilgrim vs The World is also a really good gaming-themed movie.

So many terrible films to choose from!  Wing Commander was godawful, but Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat were both utter dreck as well.

I don't think either of those two count, Wreck-It Ralph was a film based on an imaginary game that only existed for the film itself, and Scott Pilgrim, although heavily influenced by games of course, was based on a comic series, not on an actual game.

Wait, why is everyone hitting on Super Mario Bros.? Yes it's true most movies based on games are pretty bad, but Super Mario Bros. was an amazing one. They somehow did everything right when they made that movie. My only complaint is that no one ever rode Yoshi. And that's not really a complaint because it would've been far too goofy. xD

Top three worst for me are smb, for obvious reasons, the fall of reach (below) and doom. They only thing that made it doom was the fps scenes. They're decent movies for being just films but video game adaptations they are trash.

On the flip side the halo films, while two being more of a series, another being barely more than a cgi half book, and the last being more of a character intro, were somewhat good. Out of the four/five (legends, fall of reach, foreward unto dawn, and nightfall) I'd have to say foreward is the best. Love how accurate they were with the covies, even though the aliens were all cgi. Nightfall was a web series turned film that intro'd spartan lock and had mainly hunter worms. Legends was just a series of short stories in various animation styles. Reach was a total crap shot. They skipped a lot of events in the story, and it was all cgi.  Reach could've been done with the full story and as a live action like foreward was.

I have not found one I dislike. But the new resi movie does look pretty shit from the trailer, and that assassins creed film will probably be less interesting than a lobotomy.

I read this thing that said they were all high or drunk the while filming that into movie.

Thats only one part of the story

Apparently, the filming was so laborious that the lead actors had to get drunk to do it. John Leguizamo brought some scotch onto the set and he and Bob Hoskins would drink between scenes. Leguizamo ended up getting so drunk that he braked too hard while driving a van and slammed the door on Hoskins' hand. As a result, you can see Hoskins wearing a pink cast in some scenes.

For me it has to be the dreaded Resident Evil ones. Even though I like most of the video game titles. I just get so upset at how stupid people can get when trying to make the most simple of choices.

Still I know that this is acting, yet it goes to show how naive people can get in the real. Seriously you see a zombie running at you and don't have a weapon just your hands. You don't know any skills to defend yourself what do you do? Well run or find a weapon like a lead pipe.

Depending on the location and where you are at. It always happens and really why does the African American have to go first in every single horror film? I just don't get, still I do find it pretty hilarious.

Note: I do respect African Americans and have nothing against them. Just like to point that out.

I actually like the Resident Evil film series and the original Mortal Kombat film. From the video game movies I have seen, I think I would have to go with either Mortal Kombat Annihilation or the Super Mario Bros. film. To be fair though, I don't know how you could make Super Mario Bros. into a decent film.

Doom! enough said. They turned demons from hell..into human turn into devils because..science! Stupid stupid stuipd.

Rachet and Clank movie, while I never played the games I know it was just cutscenes form the game shoved into a 2 hour feature.

the Super Mario Bros. film. To be fair though, I don't know how you could make Super Mario Bros. into a decent film.

Well one suggestion woudl b to have it in thier world and not the real world. That way they can go all out silly. pastel colours and insale land of monsters. like why our world..mario has tons of silly stuff that could make a decent film...just NOT in our universe.
