Is being a nerd a bad thing...?

Being cool is subjective and in the eye of the beholder. If others think you're cool at what you do, even if it's stereotypically "nerdy", then you're cool!

It depends. Did you grow up in the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s or 80s? If so, then yes.

These days being a nerd doesn't even seem to mean anything. It used to be that a nerd was just an awkward, intellectual over-achiever. But now it refers to any topic that a person has even a vague understanding of. I guess it's a good thing that what used to be used as an insult is now a disorienting brand that doesn't even seem to have any meaning to it.

Well, in today's society, 'nerdy' appears to be the 'in-thing' around groups of people, with them usually finding and exhibiting a joined fandom of some kind in a public way. It has become more popular and accepted by society as a whole in the past few years, but to determine whether it is bad or not is entirely based on your personal beliefs. If you things it's bad, than that's your opinion, and your opinion is all that should matter to you, as long as you aren't ignorant and ignore other peoples opinions just because they don't agree with yours. So, in the end, it only matters if you think it's good or bad!

Honestly, I don't think being a brainiac is a bad thing. In fact, they should be proud of how powerful most think. I'm kinda jealous honestly, I wish I could think of long division problems extremely fast. :<

The "nerd" stereotype seemingly has disappeared in our (and hopefully all of the) school system, mostly jocks, band students, gamers, and band students are the main cliques here. Even still, most are open with each other, so I never really been called a nerd before.

I wouldn’t necessary call it a bad thing. I have never been really called a nerd before though because I am far from it. Lol but, I am smart if you wanna come to me with some topics. As long as the conversation is about My little Pony, baseball, wwe, or the loud house I can be smart as heck when it comes to those things( oh and animated movies)

but, basically a nerd isn’t really a bad thing unless you qualify being a nerd a bad thing.

I grew up with people calling me a nerd for liking video games, science fiction, and (more recently) ponies.

What qualifies as "nerdy" is entirely up to one's own perspective and tastes. As for your question, no, it's not a bad thing to be a nerd, geek, Brony, gamer, etc. You be you :)

It's great being a nerd since I feel people similar to me are less judgmental and will appreciate my silly side and understand me better. Plus we share same hobbies which means we can just hang at my home and play games or discuss stories/shows.

The con is with my slight social issue and being oblivious on who wants to talk to me/likes me,  it is hard for fellow nerds to wanna chat since they are shy or have my similar problems.

Nerds wouldn't be labeled as nerds if being a 'nerd' was considered cool. So maybe it's not so cool indeed. But does it matter?

I love books, too - Western, Fantasy, Sci-fi or historical fiction novels especially. I also like computers and programming. I also have other esoteric, and more mundane hobbies. But why bother acting the way someone else thinks it's cool for you to act if you don't get to enjoy what you like most?

No, it's not a bad thing to be a nerd. End of story.

I'd like to class myself as a nerd... (Somewhat like Twilight Sparkle, but with more books/interests about medieval fantasy... Plus I am an avid writer.) Is being a nerd... well, not cool?

What is your definition of cool?

Being a nerd is definitely not bad or weird. Nerd itself shouldn't be used as an insult, but society has deemed it so. Being educated and into reading, or writing, or school, or things of that nature, is great, and will take you places in life. I too am an avid writer, and am on the path to majoring in English, and I have experience with being known as a nerd. The only reason that people look down upon "nerds" is because the media and society in general have deemed nerds to be antisocial and weird. In reality, this is not the case. In fact, so called nerds likely have better problem solving skills than average people, have a wide variety of interests, and are just smarter in general. Have we really reached a point where being smart is not cool? So, to answer your question, being a nerd is completely fine. Different is good.

People are too concerned with acting cool. 20 years from now, no one will care what you wore - they'll care about what you accomplished and where you are now. My definition of cool is being accepting of who you are, and accepting of others and who they are. Those are the only things that matter.

I don't think being a nerd is a bad thing. It just makes you different and there isn't anything wrong with that.

At first I rejected the zero, but that was because I simply didn't understand it. Now I do.

If you’re living in a dated hokey high school TV series, then yeah.

Personally, I think things that are interesting or admirable are cool.

Someone that’s really passionate about a topic I didn’t know much about? They’re cool.

Someone that sticks to their morals and doesn’t take the easy way out? They’re cool.

I would 110% be classified as a “nerd” or a “geek” or a “dork”. I know some people think I’m strange and are put off by it because they don’t know how to respond otherwise. But I also know that there are people who think I’m fascinating and awesome, BECAUSE I’m different. And I know because some of them have said that to me face to face.
