Twilight Sparkle = piano

 

Applejack = acoustic guitar

 

Rainbow Dash = hmmm... I'm split between an electric guitar and a drum set... she could do rocking solos with both that are equally awesome! But... she'd probably go with the electric guitar, simply because electric guitar players are in the spotlight a lot more!

 

Rarity = violin

 

Fluttershy = harp... I think it's a little more soothing and quieter than even a flute, and it would appeal to her gentle nature. Plus, she'd totally be like Orpheus, taming and attracting creatures with her harp playing skills.

 

Pinkie Pie = as the original starter of the thread said, one-pony band, quite obviously, especially considering, well, we've seen it already.

I agree with you except I could see twilight playing the piano and I think pinkie should just be playing trombone.

However that combination of inseterments doesn't really make a whole lot of sense musicaly. But as long as your not concerned about that I think it would fit them best.

I read over most everything, and it all seems very good! Most everything I was going to say was taken So I am going to do something different. I will now take into account the realism of the situation: That fact that everypony has hooves, not hands! Unless the invent their own instruments.

 

So, taking hooves into account! (and their abilities--and yes, I know the show doesn't realistically compensate for hooves...but like I said, all the other ideas were taken!)

 

Twilight: Clarinet (Can use magic to compensate)

 

Rainbow Dash: Drums-requires only two sticks = two hooves (Electric guitar only if they invent a special pony pick!)

 

Fluttershy: Her voice would be her musical instrument! Lead singer in a band/show! (if she can get over the nerves)

 

Applejack: Logically? Xylophone, or ---if they have a special pony pick--acoustic guitar and/or banjo.

 

Rarity: Piano or Keyboard (Can use magic to compensate)

 

Pinkie: Pie: Pinkie could care less about logic. One Pony band!!!

 

Logically, since they only have hooves, they may invent entirely new instruments that are just as amazing.

There is plenty of music in FIM. Each piece is wonderfully diverse. We all have different tastes, I bet the mane six do as well. I also bet that if they were to learn an instrument, each would be different from the other.

A lot of you are saying that Fluttershy should be the flute and Rarity should be the harp... I kinda thought that Fluttershy would be the harp.

 

I'm gonna be different with Applejack too and give her a mandolin.

 

I agree with Twilight with the piano, and Rainbow Dash with the electric guitar.

 

Rarity would be the violin. I love that instrument so much.

 

Pinkie Pie... yeah, gotta go with trombone on this one too.

 

Other characters:

Big Mac would be the banjo. It's perfect.

Cheerilee would be the recorder. XD

Zecora would be a harpsichord. Or the organ.

Derpy would be the tuba.
