technology The greatest invention of the 20th century?

So, exactly what it says on the tin. Discuss!

I think it's nuclear bomb. The thing that put an end to large-scale military conflicts occurring every generation or so. And also played an important role in development of nuclear reactors. Which give most energy per unit of capital cost and of harm to nature yet (maybe with the exception of hydroelectric power).

20th Century? not 21st? K then. The computer, PC, really the internet in general. Without the invention of all of that things would be MUCH different today. Much of our society is based around the internet and technology like the computer, like our phones and tablets. It all started with the Computer and then the personal computer. All evolving to what we know today.

The Internet. It allows the circulation of faulty information and gives the ignorant the ability to be heard. Brilliant invention!

I'd say the modern computer would have to be the greatest invention.

Um, the internet? That invention changed the way the world works. We live in an instant world because of it, the information age where xenobytes of data is at our fingertips.

Number two would have to be the nuclear bomb, because that also changed our world forever. The irony here is, the internet infrastructure is able to withstand all out nuclear war.

I have to agree with the internet and the nuke. The internet has evolved out technology tenfold in just a few years.

The nuclear bomb, as devastating as it is, can end a conflict in an instant and has also lead to scientific advancements like nuclea renergy.

Internet. As you other peeps are saying, it just... revolutionized modern society, lol. And I love it.

The A-bomb? Bleh. I concur on it being one of the "greatest" inventions due to its own effects on history and society and all that. But not because of the terrible damage it does... Lol. >.>

The internet by far is the greatest invention of the 20th century. The atomic bomb isn't what I consider a great invention. (Being a pacifist...) I think it's done more harm then good.

The Dry-Cell Battery Whoop, jumped the gun, that was 1886. But still, you've got to admit that efficient portable electricity has changed the world almost as much as the Printing Press (1442) or electricity itself (1600).

I would say the development of the Airplane has increased the speed of globalization so much that it catalyzed modern progress as much as gunpowder accelerated warfare.

However, it is sad to know that one of the Wright Brothers was still alive, when he (and his Brothers') invention went from this

The Internet. Followed by the telephone, the computer, the radio, the TV, the automobile, and the airplane.

Try imagining a life without any of those. The 20th century was an extraordinary century for inventions and technology, and these inventions have dramatically changed the way we live.

The nuke, Hydrogen bomb, and the internet. But those are already mentioned, so some more unconventional ones:

Penicillin and antibacterials

Insulin

AC

Telephone

Cars

Either the internet or the nuclear bomb - the internet has completely changed the lives of most people in the West, and made it much, much easier to transfer any kind of data. The nuclear bomb is capable of wiping out our population, if anyone for some reason should want to do that.

I do think the car and it's predecessors was an important invention too - it made it much easier for regular people to travel far. Not as big as the other two, though.

I frequently edit my new posts to fix grammatical errors or to reword stuff, so sorry if I make it look like I'm forging my messages to change the meaning of anyone's replies or something.

the v-2 rocket, the nuclear bomb has its transcending beauty when detonated but leaves destruction. the v-2 rocket dose lead to destruction but it was the predecessor to the rocket that took us to the moon without the genius of in braun that would have not happened and we would have a different world.

There are just too many important inventions just to pick one, I think one of the most significant would be the IC or integrated circuit, changed the world of electronics forever and made the complex things we have today possible to do in such small packages, computers are also some of the most significant, i mean everything you imagine doing today is run by a computer. The Internet is also important as well since it totally changed out way of getting information and communication too,

The invention of modern toilet paper will always be, in my mind, one of the greatest inventions of any time period and also one of the most...comfortable...

That thing we are all using to talk to each other right now and eventual hivemind: The internet!

Aw, the radio is just three years out. (1897) That was a pretty big deal.

The internet, by a longshot. It has completely reinvented the way people communicate, and the potential audience creators can reach without some kind of producer/publisher.

That's really all there is to say on the matter.

The Internet. It allows the circulation of faulty information and gives the ignorant the ability to be heard.

And how things were different when there was no Internet? Faulty information and the ignorant ones didn't appear on the 'net out of nowhere.

Penicillin and antibacterials

It's actually the most ironic invention. It has severely hampered natural selection within the human population, effectively making it to become weaker with every generation, ever increasing the cost of all sorts of health-related problems for society. Not to mention people just having to live with these problems.
