What are your thoughts on Equestria Daily?

I personally dislike EQD. Mostly because the heads of EQD are corrupted to the core. One of the pre-readers of EQD also writes fanfiction. And guess what, the day he posted his story on fimfiction, it was also on EQD. This one person has already been on EQD 17 times! And all the same day he posted the stories online, while there are people who wait months to get a reaction from EQD, to hear if they are on the site. And the worst part is that once they get a reaction back, the story can easily be declined because the pre-readers didn't enjoy the story.

 

Another good example of this is about two stories that happened at the same time. One story was about a brony bullied into attempted suicide, and the other one was about a group of bronies harrasing a 17 year old boy on a level reaching federal crime. EQD had posts about the first story for weeks. And the other story? Didn't get one post and was written of as drama.

I think it's okay, as long as elitist bullshit doesn't start taking over.

I mainly check them so I know when the latest episodes are planned to air.

Since I joined the fandom in the middle of Season 4, and I was watching the series on Netflix. When Season 4 Ended I was in the middle of Season 2.

So, Season 5 is going to be the first season that I get to watch when it airs, and that makes me really excited.

I don't have any cable service, so I'll be watching the episodes live streamed online as they air, but, I will still watch the episodes when they air, with commercials, so I'm okay with that.

That's why I check EQD, so I know when they air and then I find out what streams will be streaming the Season 5 episodes as they air.

Nothing special. There are some pretty cool things here to there like the handmade stuff and the fanmade videos, but it isn't a website I like to regularly visit. The community is a little annoying for my tastes, however, especially that guy (i don't know his username) who gushes over Trixie every single post. -3-

OP: It's good to get the latest pony news on though I'm not sure how their pre readers work for fanfics since the fan fic me and my sister wrote was submitted a bit a go and they still haven't gotten back to us on that.

I've been going to EqD since it was BRAND spanking new and I continue to, and will continue to, no matter how much 'bad press' it gets.  The fact of the matter is it DOES do a great job of collecting and sharing all the most relevant pony news as well as a lot of great art, music, stories, videos etc. created by the community.  It's not SUPPOSED to be the ultimate repository of ALL content created by the community; Derpibooru is that for art, FIMfiction for fanfics, etc.. it's just there to post news, and they just happen to be nice enough to still post some of the best content out there for your enjoyment so you don't miss it, as a carry-over from the early days when literally *everything* created by the community was posted when it was still small.

 

I think people just expect too much of it, more than it can give.  It's just a few people running a news site about ponies, even as huge as it is now, and people get their pants all in a tangle whenever they realize that they don't post "MY art/fics/music/whatever" or "MY FRIENDS' art/fics/music/whatever".  It's NOT MEANT to post EVERYTHING.  You could argue all day and night "but, but, they post things that are crappier than the thing I submitted!" but that's completely subjective, and it would be crazy if they truly let *everything, everyone submitted* up there.  Like I said, there are VERY POPULAR sites dedicated to every type of fan-content for MLP out there, full of people more directly interested in that specific kind of thing you to that are chomping at the bit to read your new fanfic or listen to your new song or gaze at your new art.  Be thankful that EqD still put *any* non-news content up there as by this point they certainly don't HAVE to.

 

I will say that some of the mods there over the years have kind of gotten on my nerves here and there and can be a bit too 'it's all about me!'; People would usually accuse Sethisto of this but I'll be honest, for some reason Seth has NEVER gotten on my nerves, his Trixie-loving and silliness have always come off as, for some reason, quite charming to me, and I give the guy mad props forever for having the gumption to start the site to begin with and keep rolling with it all this time as head admin no matter how crazy things get.  But for some odd reason Cereal Velocity would always grind my gears a bit, even though he didn't do anything drastically different from Seth, his 'personal posts' seemed somehow more obnoxious to me and his Rarity-obsessing just didn't feel ... well-handled or well-presented most the time even though I love Rarity even more than Trixie; I feel like he just had more of a penchant for posting COMPLETELY non-news posts and filling the feed with pointless junk whereas Seth would at least 'tie' the Trixie thing to relevant news posts and his 'joke posts' tended to be genuine new content that he simply had no words to describe.  But meh, that's all in the past; there've been some others but it's all roughly the same kind of thing I said there.  And I'm only talking out-front stuff on the site itself; behind-the-scenes drama stuff is nothing I have interest in.

 

And besides, if you want an alternate, 'cleaner' news site, besides this one, there's Derpy Hooves News, Horse News for you ruder and cruder fans, and this one other REALLY GOOD ONE with great articles that I completely forgot the name of and will have to get back with later.

So, Equestria Daily, bronydom's most popular news site created to "centralize" the fandom. For reasons not very clear to me, I've noticed a lot of disdain to that particular site particularly here or anywhere else for that matter, but still a bit more animosity to a news site than I expected. What are your opinions or thoughts on the site?

I think it's a fun site, keeps you updated on many things. Gotten a few times on EQD and it's pretty fun to see your stuff there. Then it's also just a lot of content I'm not sure I'd be able to follow if I didn't go on there frequentely. Just so much content the fandom produces, so yeah I like it.

I do use it to keep up with the pony news and stuff. It is great for being up to date with what's going on in the fandom. If I have problems with it, it's their comments system gets really harsher (especially if it's and article about Equestria Girls) and some of the critics for episodes I've seen in the comments aren't really that good at it. Oh, and their rules on what fanfics they'll except on the site is too harsh.

Well, 4Chan might be godawful place to be where people wouldn't even spare a single brain cell before going onto a nonstop tirade about how much things they don't like suck and therefore must be purged from the planet, but at least they're honest that they are all being horrible, horrible human beings

 

People in EQD comment section... Not only they retain the same level of hostility, they have the gall to ask you to thank them for graciously parting you the infinite wisdom that is their silly rant on how your OTP sucks harder than black hole with a vacuum. I sincerely hope things have changed for the better since the last time I've been there, but I wouldn't hope for too much.

It's a good general news site to got to if you want pony news and information relating to the fandom in general and their art lists and comics are good. Also the fact it's where I get my news for merchandise is good as well.

 

My problems with that site is that it's actually a den of hateful comments on there where they will argue and hate you because they don't like your opinion regardless of how well made it is, especially Equestria Girls where there are many people who vocally hate it on there, thus if you ever see a really negative news happening (such as Alicorn Twilight and EQG reveal), the comments will go apeshit in the most extreme that will make any arguments that happen here look like a drizzle in comparison. As chikorita said as well, the way they accept fanfics is infamously harsh in the fandom and many fanfic writers have voiced criticisms of it and how the judges are often accused of being biased for their own circle of accepted writers and any new and awesome but came from relatively new writer will generally not be accepted, even if it is sfw.

 

Other news sites I've found I would recommend would be Derpy Hooves Network as while it may not be a totally MLP website (they do other cartoons and are also another haven for Littlest Pet Shop fans) nor do they update especially frequently, but I feel that they're EQD if it never became as big as it did in the fandom and decided to grow in other areas to compensate.

 

Horse News while it is attached to 4chan's /mlp/, they're surprisingly pretty well behaved if you accept the caustic behavior and other posts of the like they do, even more so than EQD's own comment board I believe. Another thing I also like is that they will report deeper stuff in the fandom and are generally among the fastest at reporting major news and rumors in the fandom due to their irregular scheduling and having alot of informers thanks to being part of /mlp/.

 

Both of those sites are also noted for not being afraid to criticize an episode or movie if it's bad, unlike EQD which you should never use as a basis for how good an episode or movie is as they're possibly scrutinized by DHX and Hasbro enough that they'll only mark positive stuff and try to write away whatever flaw, no matter how big and small as being not as bad or nonexistent just so they can keep DHX and Hasbro in their good graces, which isn't totally bad but it's definitely not a place for reviews unless it's from individual reviewers where you can check their other work.

 

tl;dr version. Use EQD for general pony news and art materials for you to enjoy in the fandom. Avoid the comment sections and don't use the site for any reviews of the episode or your fanfics unless you're a really famous fanfic writer in the fandom and have friends with the panel judges on EQD.

I only use it to find awesome artists(music) in the fandom and to keep updated on all things pony.

 

Sometimes the comments can be funny but...meh. I like the atmosphere of this site way more.

I honestly find it rather useless in the sense that it is a news source for pony related things. One quick stop on any of the funko.,4DE, IDW, or Hasbro media pages tells me pretty much all I need to know about the up comming pony stuffs, and does so in a far more professional mannor. I just find it on the same level as kotaku(albiet not quite yet as bad). And that is an entierly useless and forced center for media that can not only be found elsewhere, but they do not report any original stories or events. Everything is taken from the mouth of hasbro, and posted there itself. Why not just go straight to the source?

And that is of course just talking about the news side of the site, and forgoing its 4chan lite comments section that at times make youtube look like a breeding ground for intelligent and well informed discussion.

The best thing about them is they update really fast whenever some sort of pony news comes up, so if you check it periodically you'll have a pretty good idea of what pony stuff is going on at the moment.

 

Personally I always just view the articles tagged as "News" there, because that will give you all the official stuff going on without having to wade through a bunch of fan fics.

I didn't even know there was a comments section so I think if you ignore the comments section it'll become a pretty cool site. (Although only once a day, I'm never on more than 10 minutes a day if I decide to go on.)

 

Also it's much easier to find quality fanfiction IMO. It's hard finding something that isn't Dark, Sad or Romance on pretty much every site, but for some reason I can find my Comedy really easily.

I mean, it's not surprising. The website is SUPER popular with pretty much every type of brony able to comment on a whim. In that kind of high-volume scenario, the comments section is as bad as the worst person (which can be pretty bad).

@, just letting you know that I've merged your thread with an older one for sharing opinions on EQD . Helps to keep the discussion in one place and all that.

 

Pretty much what Andaasonsan said above. EQD's very useful for finding news about the show and other fandom fiascos quickly because so many fans are hardwired to ping them as soon as anything halfway interesting happens, and the site updates frequently. They also showcase some pretty good art, videos and music if you're interested in finding good fanmade content without having to keep up with several more specialized sites, though I've heard mixed things from people who've tried to submit things to them. Which is somewhat understandable, considering just how many pictures and stories they must get, but I can also understand how it'd be very frustrating to be rejected for seemingly trivial reasons after putting a lot of work into something.

 

But yeah, I'd never use it as a community. Seems to me there's too much focus on getting attention and upvotes and not enough quality discussion of anything.  And I tend to disagree with the consensus opinions over there when they do discuss something .

Not a big fan. It's great for pony news and seeing fan content, but some of the users over there are awful, rivaling IGN/Gamespot's(only Facebook, Youtube and Yahoo beat them in sheer stupidity). 

 

Also, Seth's continuous boner for Trixie can get annoying
