Since i'm a gamer i prefer Windows. Hardly any problems at all, if any.

Mac OS if for those who produce music and such. And Linux i can't really give a buck xP

Windows is definitely the best platform for gamers, but that is only because of compatibility, windows computers can have some serious issues, I've been struggling with compatibility issues with my GPU driver and something changed in a windows update (no idea what got updated to cause the issue) but the issue actually gives me the occasional blue screen of death.

As for Macs being better for music production and graphics, that isn't entirely true, Mac were designed to do those and as such the software were designed for Macs, but most of the software is available for Windows anyway now and Windows PCs have much more power behind them. But i think its more down to personal preference, they have the same capability but if you prefer using a Mac then you will probably get better results using one, likewise if you prefer using Windows, you will probably get better results using a windows computer.

Mac OS X Snow Leopard. The OS is better than Windows, and it has a good amount of apps. Not to mention Quick Look and trackpads no Windows laptops offer.

There are some laptops with trackpads just as good as Mac laptops, and some with better: http://www.razerzone.com/blade

I personally don't like the trackpad on my MacBook Pro, while its nice and responsive, i just don't like the feel of it.

I'm a mac user. My mom doesn't like windows since all the windows I ever own died of natural causes in 6 months and all my macs died because of my clumsiness for a year. I would like to at least try PC gaming.

I more used to Macs and I can find things easier and when I get on a windows computer, I can't find anything. :/

I feel exactly the same way when im on a mac, i cant find anything at all but on windows i know where everything is, its just down to whatever you use the most i guess.

As for killing windows computers, i know what you mean, although mine dont just "die" i overclock the hell out of my computers, usually to the point of breaking them, i've overclocked this GPU so much that i keep hitting 105°C

Windows 7.

Way back in the day (12+ years ago) I was a Mac user. But then we had this iMac which was a huge mess, and was constantly having problems. My dad ordered an PC for a much cheaper price and we have never ever looked back.

I've never tried Linux. I've never seen any problem with my operating systems I have used, so never even thought about it.

I didn't try Linux until just over a year ago, i had to use Ubuntu for some college work, it was interesting but i don't think i will use it ever again >.<

We mainly used it to get around the college security so that we could look up NSFW stuff and take control of other people's computers, we had a laugh XD

My laptop has Windows Vista, however my desktop has Windows 7 on it. I'm starting to game on the computer more, and windows can handle the games. I despise Macs mainly for the Apple fanboys and people who think their immune to crashing, viruses, and are superior to PCs.

Windows FTW. :D

I'm a linux user. I moved over from windows to Ubuntu around the time Vista was released. I spent most of my time with Arch Linux (around a year and a half), but as of late, I've moved to Chakra linux which is a pure QT environment (well... besides the brilliant bundle system for gtk applications).

I started using Linux because of the instability I had on Windows and I stayed because I liked the terminal, the convienience of software repositories and the strong security. I only have windows 7 on my new PC for gaming, but other than that, my windows partition never sees the light of day.

I use Windows. Aside from essays that I have to write, I don't do that many creative computer projects, so I don't have to worry about having the best operating system for said projects. If that were the case, then I'd probably have a Mac, since I've heard they're very good for such projects.

Windows forever. Nothing a Mac can do that a PC can't do just as well, and usually at a cheaper price. Plenty a PC can do that a Mac can't, however. Viruses aren't an issue as long as you have good AV and aren't an idiot, and you avoid crashing the OS if you know what you're doing. Some games and other programs will crash, but that's generally due to a bug or something, which you just need a patch for.

Macs are overpriced crap. They're marketed for being good for music and video production and stuff, but all that really means is that they come with Garage Band and IMovie, niether of which are exactly top notch software, and both OS's have much better options for stuff like that.

Also, Macs lack of gaming capability isn't just because of compatibility issues. There's plenty of high-end gaming hardware that won't work with fancy Mac hardware. And what there is, well, you price up a gaming-ready PC and a gaming-ready Mac and tell me which you'd rather pay.

Apple has a great marketing team, but that's about it.

I was going to vote mac, but i mainly use windows, only for games, if i could somehow change it, i would make mac osx be compatible with games and all programs that windows is, cause IMO, mac osx is smoother and less buggy.

Windows. I have always used it and I always will. It's pretty straightforward and I never have any problems with it. Also, Windows can do anything a Mac can and more. Plus, I casually game on my computer so Windows is nice.

I've been a Windows user since Windows 98. So, yeah I use Windows since I mostly play games on my computer. I've never tried Mac OSx or Linux so I can't say anything about them.

I'm not trying to start an argument, I was merely stating facts. I didn't talk about Linux because my knowledge of Linux is basically "It's open source, an ubuntu boot disc is really convinient for reliably backing stuff up between upgrading/switching OS's, and gentoo is a bitch to install."

I have a question though. Doesn't a mac have the ability to become a windows using boot camp? Is there a disadvantage of using this kind of windows?

It still has mostly Mac hardware, so you still won't be able to run some windows software.

Right now, I use a Hackintosh powered by Mac OS 10.7. However, I would prefer to run FreeBSD. I could fill your ear with hundreds of hours of complaints and annoyances that I have with the Mac OS ecosystem. Really, the only thing that keeps me running Mac is that I need constant and easy access to certain programs that I just can't get outside of the Mac/Windows world:

  • Speech to text (I depend on it heavily due to a wrist injury - RSI)
  • Microsoft office suite
  • Hoards of pointless, esoteric statistics apps

Windows forever. Nothing a Mac can do that a PC can't do just as well, and usually at a cheaper price.

Windows can do anything a Mac can and more

Software development. In particular, the development of server-side applications in a variety of languages and using a variety of different libraries and server-side utilities. The thought of compiling the latest versions of Ruby, node.JS, and FFMPEG+patches on Windows fills me with dread. The process is nowhere near as nice as it is on Mac.

Basically, the core of Mac OS X consists of some very nifty things that were incorporated from FreeBSD and NetBSD and then tweaked/customized by Apple. The result is a programming environment that is basically UNIX-compliant. It's beautiful… Messy sometimes, but beautiful.

All of these things are wonderful:

I've played around with Cygwin for Windows in the past, but it really didn't come anywhere near to having a native *Nix environment. Virtualization takes me part of the way there, but, once again, it's hard to beat a native *Nix environment. Mac OS walks the line between offering the developer pleasantries of a native *Nix environment and still providing the ability to easily run some of the proprietary applications that I need on a daily basis.

I depend on and play around with a ridiculous variety of stuff. Right now, from macports alone, I have about 2000 packages installed. That count includes servers, programming languages, utilities, libraries and their dependencies… To install all of these things on Windows would be a brutally unpleasant experience.

I'm not the only one that feels this way. If you go to a developer conference that is not devoted to Windows systems programming, then you are going to see Macs all over the place. It just can't be helped, Mac OS is a fairly pleasant environment for developers. If I had more narrow software development interests or I just didn't do any software development, then I would definitely favor Windows.

As a matter of fact, I still keep a Windows partition around so I can play games every once in a while. I also use Windows to test Windows-only software development tools. I don't hate the Windows operating system, but I just find the Windows development environment to be highly unsatisfactory for those with broad software development interests.

None; DragonflyBSD.

Only a single BSD user…

It is official; Netcraft now confirms: *BSD is dying!! Abandon ship while you still can! </tiredoldantibsdtroll>

*ahem*

Hey there! A BSD user! I should've known that you were a BSD user. And DragonflyBSD as well… BSD is the operating system of the hacker elite, and DragonflyBSD is system developer nirvana. Lightweight threading, innovative new file system, kernel improvements, etc, etc… I'm salivating now just thinking about all these goodies…

I remember using FreeBSD on an old 486 back in the day. I kept that system around for comically long amount of time. Fun times, fun times… So, how is DragonflyBSD working for you as a desktop? Do you use any graphical user interface or are you a hard-core terminal, vim, screen guy? (Emacs is for newbs.)

And yeah... This is the nerdiest thing I have written on this site. ^_^

Disagreed, it's one of the coolest things you've written on this site ^_^

Dragonfly definitely is great -- I'm even planning on installing it onto an old desktop I have to make use of it as a server of sorts! As for the window manager, I simply compiled Awesome Window Manager for it, and that's what I'm using for it :) Vim definitely IS better than Emacs. :D I have arguments with people all over the place about that for the glory of text editing, of course!

As for working with FreeBSD on a 486-based computer.. wow, you've definitely been speaking geek for a lot longer than I have :) What'd you think of FreeBSD back then? I bet it was a lot different than how it is today.

Since March 2011 I use Windows because of moviemaking - The Sony Vegas didn´t work even through wine. Until then, I used Linux and I have to say it´s the best OS. No crushes, no viruses, no problem. The only con is what I already mentioned - You have to emulate all the games & other stuff, because of lack of linux verses.

I use Windows XP 99.9% of the time. It's what's on my computer, and I have no reason to change it because it work well. I will rarely use Linux, because I can boot it from a flash drive and use it to recover data from crashed hard drives.

Okay, "crap" is an opinion. Overpriced certainly isn't. The same specs will cost a lot more in a Mac than a PC.
