Pony Romance: Why? Who?

I don't remember where I read this, but it was just a quick quote.

"I think I have a crush on Twilight Sparkle."

"Everyone in the fandom has a crush on Twilight at some point.

It's going to be okay."

I had a hunch that attractions to the mane six or other characters in the show was something natural.

I didn't have that hunch. Till I cross-examined it a bit with Jung's theory, then it made perfect sense!

Oh sorry. I didn't mean to beat a dead . . . tree.

I don't think you've beaten a dead...tree. The subject is still valuable and worth discussing. When I said "something we already know" I meant more at a subconscious level, psychologically, rather than a fact we keep forfront in our minds. It's one we'd realize if we spent some time thinking about why we might be attracted to the characters of the show, but not necessarily something that would jump forward instantly without that trigger.

So basically, this discussion is still valuable, worthwhile, and probably soothing to some people who might have felt conflicted, confused, or even disturbed by their attraction.

Eh, I find shipping just too strange to me no matter what level.

But thats just me!

Yeah I found it strange for the longest time, I actually thought it was something awful! But from what I've seen there's some really good art there!

But yeah cartoon ponies meant for little girls being in lesbian relationships is a VERY weird concept so I can see why you don't like it!

My hunch was that the people that were attracted to the mane six or other ponies where attracted to their human-like qualities.

I don't think it is, considering the male to female ratio. You're almost forced to ship yuri or ship Big Mac with everypony else.

I hope you're not saying that because you feel homosexuality is an inappropriate subject for children to discuss or see, because it isn't, anymore than heterosexuality is.

As for how I view shipping in general, I've never been bothered by it. I am an adult, therefore I view the show in a different way than a little kid might. I see beyond just what we see on screen, to the real nitty gritty details beneath the surface. There are plenty of things that would never be shown that probably exist in the world of Equestria, from the details of relationships, to the sorts of lifestyle activities the characters might choose to indulge in that would be inappropriate for little kids to see, and so on and so forth. Plus, the characters themselves are adults. Young adults, to be sure, but adults nevertheless. So I don't see them being in a relationship being a problem. The only popular shipping couple that has ever bothered to me to any real extent is Spike and Rarity, and that's because Rarity is an adult and Spike isn't. Fortunately the show has handled that so well that I'm not even worried about it apart from what the fanbase might do with it--I stay clear of anything to do with the pairing just in case.

Ahh! Great Point There!

I apologize for being closed minded! That's so unlike me!

What I meant by that was that it is "weird" according to normal standards and most people don't view it that way! I for one disagree on how children are raised on the subject of homosexuality. It is hidden from them like if it is bad or something! Which it isn't! It's a very beautiful thing! I mean how can I disagree I'm bisexual!

If I were to read my children a fairy tale, I think I would mix it up a bit. Perhaps the Princess rejects Prince Charming and marries a handmaiden and they live happily ever after! :P MUCH better story IMO!

Just like me! I'm very grateful you guys are actually on the same page as me. My first attempted catharcise at this was to include Fluttershy in a story arc for a Superhero Tabletop I was playing!

Where were you a month ago when I thought I was insane? :P

You're not the only one here who's had those kind of feelings for a character from the show. My infatuation for Rarity has beem quite confusing to me. It's died down a bit but I still have a rather big crush on Rarity.

Not because I like equine animals on that level but because her personality (and to some extent appearance) is something I would desire from a girl in real life.

Oh Rarity! I could break into sonnet about Rarity! In fact, I will!

~

Rarity

I can see you with such clarity

And I sing with regularity

Because I love you, Rarity

Nah I'm just kidding. But yeah Rarity. She places much emphasis on being a lady, that's a HUGE one in my book. Then there's being an entrepreneurial artist, she's cultured, she's classy, and she's capable. That one time with the diamond dogs demonstrated that not only can she handle herself in a dangerous situation, but she can do it through guile and charm instead of having to go amazon on the captors. Lastly she . . . is part of the reason I'm confused, because at SO many points her human physical qualities shine through. And that's when my brain goes into anthro translation mode for the human equivalent. Exhibit A:Posted Image:blink: Bad brain! Bad brain!

Never thought of it that way.

My mind never really let the idea of cartoon anthropomorphic ponies register as real-life female archtypes (in addition to my intentional and willing conditioning to avoid pornographic content in any form) which is why I've never much cared for shipping beyond Friendshipping.

Nothing wrong with friendshipping, not enough of it I say! My argument is that art imitates life, Lauren Faust wanted to create role models for little girls. So she created ideal, but still flawed, adult (or nearly adult) women. (They're just ponies because it's a cartoon.) Edited by Steelquill

Haha! I know exactly what you mean

Don't worry about it, just try to find a girl in real life who has a similar appearance and/or personality as her :P

Eeyup, most who feel this are attracted to their personalities and such. Nothing wrong with it.

I thought something was wrong with me when (A). Gilda made Fluttershy cry and I started swearing at the TV... and point B- When Discord turned almost all of the mane six into...well...depressive...bitches, and I screamed "NOOOOOOOO CHANGE THEM BACK!".

Maybe my parents are right, I might have a couple of screws up in my head loose. ;)

But yeah, aside from that, feeling a bit of emotion towards a character in any TV show is perfectly fine.

However, when it goes too far, you get Rule 34 and that's when it becomes problematic.

Edit: Don't you hate it when technological stuff confuses typing with emoticons...? >.>

Eeyup and eeyup. I'm probably the least tech savvy guy of my generation. Just to let you know, I was the exact same way on both accounts. I get angry for the Youtube clips when the mane 6 are "discorded" and people . . . . get turned on by it! When Fluttershy said "Mama's so proud!" I was on the verge of TEARS! A little bit of me died inside when Twilight turned grey and cried that tear. Needless to say, Discord's defeat was, for me . . .

Garrus: . . . satisfying. (Normally play Paragon, by the by.) My immediate reaction was "POUND HIM TO RUBBLE!!!"

That's what my former (former! not "ex") girlfriend says to me. She actually says somepony like Rarity would bring out the best in me. I trust her judgement and I know you're right, but that doesn't make being without someone an easier cross to bear across the sands of time. :( Sorry, I don't mean to sound like a downer, and if I've learned anything as a brony. It's that I'm NOT alone! B)

This guy isn't talking about shipping. He's talking about waifus. Having a waifu is perfectly normal.

On the Mass Effect thing, Ashley Williams is quite attractive. For some reason the Tali relationship in the game reminds me of this song:

This whole sexual attraction to pony is overrated. Some people take their addictions way too seriously.

I haven't really seen any posts pointing to sexual attraction (not that it would be wrong, it is just another human emotion), from what people are saying it sounds more like a personality attraction.

For me Rarity's personality is one I would love to find in a human, overly-dramatic, artistic, caring, and a little guileful.

Thank you for reassuring me. I am glad you see what I meant. I was afraid my previous post would start up a huge argument about the subject, but thankfully it didn't. (Incidentally, you're not the only bisexual here.)

In regards to the subject of homosexuality, I hope the show does eventually approach the subject in a reasonable manner. Hope, I say, but I'm not about to hold my breath either. It is controlled by Hasbro after all, and Hasbro probably won't ever allow the subject to be explored, even if the show might wish to do so. I think that if Lauren Faust still had firm direct control, and didn't have to go through Hasbro, she'd be willing to explore the subject. The same is probably true of many of the writers on the show.

I apologize if this post is treading off topic.

Aspects on my ideal lady indeed. I do admit there is a bit of "hints" my brain is giving me sometimes when Rarity poses . . . or upon reviewing Spike's flashback of Rarity's kiss. (Where were you for me that time, context?) But as I've stated, my brain treats attraction a bit wonky. (Having something close to Asperger's syndrome might have something to do with it.) Demisexuality: Basically I don't experience physical desire unless I'm actually interested in the person themselves. I'm not making this up, at least not the idea. http://www.asexualit...itle=Demisexual

So, as stated in my theory, since the mane 6 do a fantastic job of exemplifying feminine qualities they cause my brain to "take notice". I compare it to the reaction you get when the tomboy cleans herself up for an event and THAT'S when you "take notice." Oh Celestia I'm starting to creep myself out! Feel free to pump those shotguns.
