Is Rainbow Dash a hated character?

However, the reason rainbow dash is so hated upon is because she's considered the overrated of the mane 6.

 

She's been used everywhere all the time, and makes the others look bad or not as great as the others.

 

She's a cool character, if not, a bit overused at times.

I love RD! I would think that she's one of the most loved ponies in the show. She may be a bit marmite though; those who don't love her may hate her. I honestly don't know but I can't say she ever struck me as being hated.

I always thought that hating something due to it's popularity is incredibly silly and pretty sad. It really blinds them from what made that something well loved in the first place. Take Final Fantasy VII for example, especially in recent years fans have been bashing the game because it's too overrated, yet they fail to see the great story, behind it, one of the arguably saddest scenes in the game, great battle system, great characters, and etc. I may not like it as much as the other games but goddammit it's still awesome(plus it gave us freaking Zack). Same with Halo and CoD, people will often slam them because "people like them too much", and go as far as to label them the worst games ever, to which really pathetic at that point

IMO, rainbow dash has fallen HUGELY in how important/iconic she is. Pinkie pie and twilight VASTLY trump her now, she's not really that big anymore, and not nearly the iconic character of the series.

I don't understand what's cool or awesome about her. There is very few fictional characters that are boastful and actually cool. Dan Hibiki and Hercule Satan come to mind. Even in Arthurian Legends Sir Kay the boastful and asshole knight is nowhere near cool or awesome.

1. Whenever another pony's flaws a shown, the fandom understands them, when Dashie's flaws are shown the fandom hates on her, and deems episodes like that as bad episodes (Rarity also suffers from this, but not as much) 2. She is often called a tomboy, which isn't a very flattering term, and she is not one at all. 3. Whenever she's shipped with another female pony, she is singled out like she is the only one who this happens to. 4. My favorite episode ("The Cutie Mark Chronicles") is often used as fuel to hate her (this annoys me, obviously). 5. Fanfictions that star, or mostly feature her, such as "Cupcakes" or "My Little Dashie" seem to be universally hated (I adore MLD, Cupcakes I can take or leave)

 

Dashie is and always has been one of my favorite ponies on the show. I'll give my take on the points mentioned (bearing in mind that it's now three years after the OP...) below:

 

1. Dashie's first and foremost flaws are her boastfulness and arrogance. These traits can very easily lead to a very negative image in any character, perhaps more so than the flaws of the other Mane 6. Added to this is the inherent difficulty of writing these traits well for a predominantly young audience. The end result are episodes that feel rather anvilicious because of the exaggeration of the unfavorable traits to the point common sense goes out the window, in turn necessitating heavy-handed (hooved?) conclusions.

 

2. What's wrong with the phrase tomboy? If you mean that it perpetuates outdated gender roles, then I sort of see your point in calling it a 'negative' word, but the simple fact is that most people don't really consider it an insult or anything, but rather a value-neutral description. It's certainly not a sign that Dashie's being hated, just that she likes sports and the like and that she's pretty tough.

 

3. This one has to do with SJWs gleefully ignoring the massive, show-wide shipping and focusing on Rainbow because of her mane, thereby perpetuating the stereotypes they allegedly abhor.

 

4. I can't really comment on this one, seeing how I never knew that this episode was being used as flame fuel. I honestly don't even see why that would be, unless someone already disliked her and took that to its logical conclusion by making her more or less responsible for giving all the Mane 6 their cutie marks.

 

5. Cupcakes is infamous because of its gore and atrocious spelling and grammar. If Pinkie had murdered Twilight instead it would have the same reputation as a horrible fic as it does now. MLD is so cheesy and sugary sweet it goes past endearing and straight into narm for a lot of people, including me. I'm fairly certain there are tons of lesser known fanfics that feature her in a positive light.

 

All in all, I really don't think Dashie gets any more hate than any of the other Mane 6. People who like a certain pony tend to notice hate for that pony more than hate for other characters, simply because of their own affection for the character.

Any character will attract criticism from elements within their respective fandoms.  However, I haven't seen anything that suggests that there is some kind of systemic dislike of RD in the MLP fandom.  In fact, given her routine appearance high up in 'best pony' or 'best mane 6' polls and the amount of merchandise (official or otherwise) fan-art and fan-animations featuring her, it seems axiomatic that she is by far one of the most popular ponies.

She's fallen very much out of favor, nowadays Rainbow Dash really seems to bring out the worst of people in this fandom, you can't have any sort of discussion about the character without several people blowing blood vessels and acting like she murdered their dogs

Not my favourite character, but the way I see it, she's far from a hated character. She seems popular to me. Maybe some people have a problem with her tomboy personality but I'm pretty sure that's a minority

From the mane 6, she is my least favorite character, but that doesn't mean I hate her. I don't like it when she say: "I am so awesome!", but I generally don't like it when a person do this. I wouldn't say she is the most hated character, there are characters who get more dislike than her (but usually non of the main characters). Sometimes I think that her fame is a little bit overrated, but on the other side, everybody has his own opinion why he like or dislike a character.

I certainly don't. I may not relate to her as well as I can with other ponies, but she's not bad at all. And also, I always thought tomboy was a good thing.

 

She's a bit overconfident, sure, but she's still a good friend, and that's what's most important.

Okay, I'll toss in my two cents on this.

 

When I started watching the show, I saw RD as a bragging, self-centered egotist.  Growing up as I did, I often saw that same personality type in many of the bullies I had to deal with - it didn't help my opinion of her at all.  I held onto this intense dislike of her... until the pet competition.  I found the idea of her making animals compete to win her affection to be VERY self-centered, and felt kind of bad for the other animals who just wanted a friend.

 

Then, the way she reacted to Tank's selflessness made me stop: She really did that?  It was expected dramatically, of course... but personality-wise, it came as a total surprise to me.  It was actually seeing her at her low point, unable to fly and scared, that began to open my eyes to the possibility that there was more there than meets the eye.  I began to pay a bit more attention to her.

 

When she tried to stop Winter from coming just to have Tank stay with her was the one that finally got me to like her.  RD on her own tends to be a bit too abrasive for my tastes... but paired with Tank, her emotions really seem to come to the forefront more completely.

 

I USED to hate Rainbow Dash... but after seeing her emotions on her sleeve like that, I can't hate her anymore.  Heck, I don't WANT to.  I may not be able to identify with her in a typical fashion, but when she cries, I am right there with her.

 

My opinion of her is definitely 20% cooler now.

Boastful characters usually have to be crazy awesome to make them cool, in that they need to be over the top to make them work. But there are tons of them that are really well liked.

 

 

PinkiePie is defenitely increasing in popularity. I hear about more and more people loving her.

Honestly, Pinkie pie is the flagship character for the franchise, IMO, even far more than twilight.

 

She tends to be the one that hasbro uses the most for images and advertising and puts front and center on their images for MLP. IMO, I think its because she's bright pink, making her very marketable to the "traditional" girly toys side of things, while also being sponge bob style humorous which tends to have a very large demographic appeal.

Pinkie? Maybe in terms of merch in that she's kind of on all the merch banners or whatever you want to call them but in terms of having a solid fanbase I hardly ever see hardcore Pinkie Pie fans anymore, I see them even less than hard Applejack fans honestly. Hell even in terms of fanworks she now consistently gets less than Fluttershy and gets about as much or less than Rarity.

 

Pinkie is incredibly marketable because of her design but she's not especially popular compared to some other characters.

Amongst bronies maybe, but I think she probably has a much large fanbase amongst the target audience than she does with the bronies. (proportionally). They wouldn't make THAT much merch and plaster her front and center on so much advertising if she wasn't popular with the kids, it just wouldn't make sense, yeah?
