oh my god

i finally figured out why it's called Earthbound in the localization! spoilered because it might contain spoilers:

 

 

you need to defeat the cosmic entity of evil that is Giygas.

but the power you possess, it isn't enough.

instead, you, and 3 other kids, have to travel to 8 different locations of the world, to collect 8 melodies on 8 different sancturaties of the earth.

once you've done so, you need to face your inner fears and evil, by overcoming it inside your subconscious.

after you then know that you have no fears, you know you're ready to fight Giygas, by absorbing the powers of the 8 different sanctuaries.

once you've done that, you have received the power of the Earth, to stand against Giygas.

thus, you have become... Earthbound!

 

 

It's also because "Mother 2" sounds a little more ridiculous to westerners than it does in Japan. Also, mothers don't factor into the plot as much as it did Mother 1.

Mother 1 was also gonna be called Earthbound, and, even though i haven't completed it, seems to incorporate a similar plot (travel to 8 locations of the world, collect 8 melodies...).

 

this is all just bizarre speculation, at any rate, but it makes sense to me.

I believe there's a fanport or something of Mother 1 called Earthbound Zero. I've never actually played any of the games.

it's not a fanport, actually. it's a finished prototype of the game that was supposed to be released in North America! they got ahold of one when a guy showed up, claiming to hold a prototype of the cart. turns out, he was right, and some people on Starmen.net helped to get money to buy it, and they dumped a ROM of the game to the internet.

guh, i think that's enough of The 7th Saga for me now. got the Sky Rune, and Lejes and Olvan has the best equipment available for now.

check out this sega ROM called The Immortal. it's a dark fantasy dungeon crawler puzzle maze. prolly one of the most underrated games of it's time.
