Why is Princess Cadence so left out?

Lisa

Recommended Posts

Well, I've noticed 75% of the brony fandom follows either Princess Celestia, or Princess Luna. But, why not Princess Cadence?

Is it because Luna/Celestia have had more screen-time? Is it because Luna and Celestia control the moon/sun which is 'godlike'?

Please explain. I believe Cadence is equal to both of them, (on a more personal note, I think she has the best colour scheme. ;) )

why are the princes such as Blueblood and Shining Armour left out while the princesses get all the fanart and fanfictions and attention by the writers?

Maybe you should start a discussion thread about that, instead of posting it here. :P

And I think Shining Armor is a fantastic prince....not so much Blueblood though... xD

Well for many Luna has an edge, a panache and a darkness (princess of the night after all) that fans find attractive. People like a bad girl.

Celestia is Celestia meaning the god-like figure head and naturally draws a crowd. She's also subject to the those wacky (silly) Trollestia and Moleistia memes. People like that too.

Cadence, poor Cadence, suffers in many bronies eyes from PPPS or Pretty Pink Princess Syndrome. She's thought to be too stereotypical and too Disney Princess like. Also she is thought to have appeared, been created, as simply a way to sell toys. Plus her writing is considered weak.

(News flash to the Hasbro haters the whole show is about selling toys. All cartoons are. Heck all movies/TV/music are a way to make money. There is no art, just money.)

To begin with, I like Cadence mkay, she looks great, great colour scheme and she is just cute. Although, here is probably why, straight from Lauren Faust herself.. Q: So, I heard Princess Cadence was on the drawing board during S1. What was your original plan with her?
A: She was not thought up until Season 2. She was created in the story room for that episode. Want to ask a different question?

So as you can clearly see, she was possibly only made for that episode. That might be the reason, although I'm sure we will see more of her. She hasn't gotten more screentime then Luna and Luna needs more screentime.

So don't you worry, she will have more screentime in the future. Hopefully they will add more of Luna, Colgate and Derpy too.

I feel that Princess Cadence came out of nowhere in season 2, while Princess Celestia and Luna were the two main Princesses in the show and were known throughout the entire show. I'm sure that a lot of bronies like her just as much as Celestia and Luna, but it's just that she would need more story than being Twilight's babysitter and being a Princess.

The younger audiences may not care about back-stories on characters like Cadence or any background character but a lot of bronies do care, which is probably the reason why many bronies don't like Cadence as much.

I've never really seen that about Cadance myself, i.e. I've never really seen her as stereotypical, nor have I seen her as Disney like  I do like her, and even ship her with another pony, but I agree more needs to be done with here.

It's a shame that some think she was "created just to sell toys", the character may have been thought while the episode was being made (this is confirmed now), but the storyline was planned for a long time, and was algedly one that was based on an old idea of Lauren's, so simply creating the character while the episode is being made doesn't mean that she was just created to sell toys.  They could have just come up with the whole storyline around what was happening and just not decided on her character yet.  It happens.

Also, if you were joking, it's fine, but I do resent the whole "all about money" thing you say at the end of your post,  Art does exist, we don't just create for money, some of us do care about the art, and storytelling.  I am interested in art, but if I was able to make it a reality, and release my creations to the world, would I only care about money?  No, I'd care about my ideas being shown to the world, my story being told.  The same is true to many writers, singers, artists, whatever - they aren't all just in it for money, it kind of hurts that you think we are.

Also, while Hasbro themselves may only care about money, it's clear that the people who write My Little Pony (not just FIM) as a TV series care about the story and the entertainment for the viewers.

What do you get if you take the adventurous element, and good vs. evil storylines of Generation 1, reintroduce some abandoned storylines, that only happened with the toys, add the lessons of life elements from My Little Pony Tales, and the adorableness, and fantasy element from Generation 3, use the type of personalities of ponies used in all generations, and put them together using a true fan's perspective?

What I said about Cadence was my interpretation, paraphrasing, of how the community sees her. Not everybody shares that view. For myself I have no feelings about her and at the moment I'm leaning toward liking her.

As far as what I said about art I was too harsh, but I'm annoyed by people who point to Cadence and Princess Twilight as a scheme by Hasbro to just sell more toys and make more money. The whole show is about making money, but that does not mean that the art isn't there or the artists involved don't care. But to survive on TV, or in the movies, your show has to make money or it gets cancelled. I love art for arts sake but it's very hard to find when you're talking about commercial entertainment.

I've dedicated my life to being a naturalist and environmental educator and that is not a career one does for the money. I also wrote fanfic and enjoy some basic computer art. I love art. My beef is with people who attack certain aspects of the show for being money making schemes when the whole show is about that and the truth is that's OK.   Sorry if I upset you.

Keep in mind, Hasbro and the animation company for the show are working together to impress their target market - young girls. Yes, little girls fantasize over meeting their prince charming, but I'm sure they would prefer him to be human. So instead, the tactic is to go for the cute princess factor that makes kids want to say: "I want that because watching/playing with it makes me feel like a princess too!"

This is my interpretation from the business aspect of the brand. I'm sure there are other (better) reasons but this I thought I'd share laugh.png

Celestia and Luna have been on the show from the very beginning and are integral characters in the series, and have both been in and played active roles in multiple episodes. Cadence, on the other end, entered the scene very suddenly and without any pretext and has had very little involvement in the series. Also, compared to Celesia and Luna, her personality is a bit bland and she doesn't do much to stick out.

That bolded paragraph is EXACTLY my opinion.

Cadance has only been in 5 episodes. 5. And that brief cameo in the ~shudders~ Twilicorn episode.

Celestia has been in 24, and Luna in 8.

But Luna is still much more popular because she has been there since the beginning.

And she was one of the most popular villians.

It in part because she hasn't really developed that much as a character yet and because there are some people who think she a bit of a Mary Sue. My favorite princess is will most likely always be Luna because I find her the most interesting and relatable of the princesses but I do like Celestia and Candence as well. I think one good thing that may come out of twilicorn is that it presents opportunities for great character development for all of them which could bring Candence's popularity up a bit.

I see it more of a lack of character development. Luna & Celestia have been in the show since the beginning, and Cadence was only introduced in the Season 2 finale. Then, we started to see more of her in Season 3. I think when a character is left out, I think it is either their popularity or how they were introduced.

I think that one thing people are missing out on with this discussion is actually quite a basic, yet important fact.... Yin and yang, balance. Think about it, there is something appealing about two sisters that are opposites of each other. One representing the darkness and night the other the day and light.

The idea of there being deities that control those things has been around long before any organised religion, it speaks to something that is extremely instinctive to us. A goddess of love though is relatively new by comparison and never as the same strength of following.

Of course there is the screen time element and the fact that Cadance came out of left field.

Cadence was more or less a Hasbro decision, from what my understanding is. She came into this well-established series controlled by the two long-term alicorns everyone is familiar with, out of nowhere. While the studio and writers made her a character that's perfectly fine, it doesn't change the fact that more bronies are more familiar with Celestia and Luna, and often prefer them. That said, no, I've seen numerous people on here who like Cadence the best. I personally find her to be the least interesting of the princesses, though I have nothing against her.

Celestia is still Best Princess, though :3

@@Star_Gazer,

Hello there. We already happened to have a topic dedicated to discussing Cadence's relative lack of popularity compared to other princesses such as Celestia and Luna, so for convenience your topic has been merged with the older one.

Candence has two main problems as a character.

The biggest one is that the writers have not done much of anything with her. I think it's pretty clear that she was forced to be put on the show because Hasbro wanted a pink princess to have a wedding. It shows as she's pretty much just there to fill that role. However, t does look like they are setting something up with her having ties to the crystal empire based on her cutie mark. Though we have yet to see any of that, and the whole crystal empire adventure centered around Twilight anyway.

The second problem is that the fandom can't come up with anything for her either. Candace doesn't have any quirks like certain ponies, such as Celestia's moon banishment thing or Lyra wanting to be a human. Celestia and Luna are more interesting due to their demi-god status which peaks interest in their past. Candace did bring up curiosity about how Alicorns work due to her being a pegasus in the past, but that has more to do with the nature of the species rather than Candace herself.

tl;dr version: Candace is bland and boring. The writers need to flesh her out and give her some actual characteristics.

Well, let's look at Celestia and Luna.

Celestia- she's regal, wise, and near Godlike.  She carries herself with elegance and commands respect. But that the same time, there's a part of her that's a bit of a lighthearted jokester- whether it's tricking the Cakes with a cup of tea, or sitting back and enjoying the chaos of the usually stuffy Gala.

Luna-Also regal and wise like her sister, but a bit of a lost soul looking for redemption, trying to fit back into society and not quite knowing how. She's alsoquite the ham.  A rather large ham, in fact, what with the ROYAL CANTERLOT VOICE and all that.

Cadence?  She's... nice.

...Honestly, that's all I can come up with for her.

it's not just Celestia and Luna either.  Most of the characters have a flaw or personality quirk that makes them memorable.  Rainbow Dash is cocky and doesn't think things through, Rarity is a vain drama queen, Twilight's kind of a dork, Fluttershy is extremely timid, Applejack is stubborn, and Pinkie is... well, Pinkie.

And Cadence?

She's... nice.

Which can work if a character is super wholesome and innocent in a somewhat more cynical world, but not here. er personality is so undefined beyond that "niceness" that it's hard to care about her character.

... Because she was created for the purpose of "A Canterlot Wedding"?

Personally, I really like Cadence. She hovers between the number 2 and 3 spot of my "best princesses" list with Luna. Twili is at the top, of course.

Lateness factor, at least I think that's the major reason. If you think about it, she was Twilights babysitter, and clearly a beloved one

There is so much character history that can be extrapolated from just that simple fact. All of the Princesses have enough given to be developed into full blown characters. But Cadence arrived too late, people will always prefer the 'original'.

Personally I feel that's she's there when she doesn't need to be, like there's no real value to her character besides just existing, she doesn't strike me as the princess/ruler type either, I don't feel she really deserves to be a ruler, I feel that the writers could have made her something else.

I haven't read the other posts, so I'll just say my opinion.

Celestia is riding on Luna's wave. The fans simply ADORE Luna because of the whole socially awkward personality she had IN ONE EPISODE. In the others she seems normal enough, but the fans just stuck with it. And there is the Royal Canterlot Capslock Voice.

Most fics featuring Luna show her yelling around Equestria or talking with archaic mannerisms. It's her charm.

Celestia complements her. Day and Night. Perfect. (With Twilight in between?)

Poor Cadance is just... There.

Personal opinion: the Princesses are the second best thing of Equestria. I just love Celestia and Luna, but I have a place for Cadance and Twilight too. Not forgetting the princes: Shining Armor and Blueblood. Now Blueblood is a forgotten little prince. wink.png

I believe Cadence gets so much hate because she was just introduced all willy-nilly in Canterlot Wedding. She kinda just pops outta nowhere and bam there's a character that we must appreciate with absolutely no buildup whatsoever. And this would have been fine if Twilight would have not known her before. Don't you think that "the best foalsitter" Twilight had as a kid would have been mentioned at somepoint? i dunno. BronyCurious and AntonyC pretty much summed up how I feel about Cadence.
