general Do you smoke ?

Nah, I don't smoke.  Only ever smoked once and that was at a senior dinner held at my college president's house this past spring; smoked a cigar after dessert with some other students that the president was handing out, mostly out of curiosity.  Gotta say, I do see the appeal, especially for cigar smoking since it's not addictive unlike cigarettes, and it wasn't that bad honestly (although I was just a smidge sick afterwards, but that was probably because I'd had a few glasses of wine and a glass of cognac beforehand).  Still, except for rare occasions like that I don't ever plan on smoking regularly, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else, at least not as a healthy habit.  If you choose to smoke though that's your choice, and far be it from me to stop you.

I smoked once, but it tasted bloody awful, I do not recommend it.
But honestly, I think pipe smoking is the only kind of smoking that looks 'badass'..
Maybe it's a British thing

Have a nice cold pint, and wait for all this to blow over..

I'm a smoker who probably isn't quitting anytime soon. I know about all the negative health effects, often calling it the slowest form of suicide. I just don't care.

Accepting all the negative consequences, it was a personal choice to start smoking. There's nothing "cool" or "badass" about smoking, it just helps me get through the day in our fucked up society.

when you break it down its actually safer than other "Anti Depressants" as well as easier to obtain :P

Nicotine is a known anti depressant, and it also can act as a dietary supplement to some degree (it lowers cravings for food and such)

I do not smoke, nor do I ever intend to. I have a history of addiction, and death caused by smoking, in my family, so I'm going to hold off on smoking forever. The same will probably apply to drinking. However, I don't have to worry about this right now, because I am only seventeen.

I dont smoke and actualy I really dislike when people smoke close to me. I got headaches because of smoke, normaly im not kind of a, well Beyatch but it really annoys me when people smoke at my side. I hate when the smell of smoke gets into my cloths and even more when i realize even my hair smells like that.

I dont have problem with people smoking, everypony can decide what nails to set on their coffin but please if you know somepony around you dislike the smoke have a little conscience and smoke away from them.

I really dislike smoking. It smells very bad and I can't even begin telling you what that stuff does to your breath.

It's sad really but my dad constantly smokes. I've tried stopping him since I was 10 and he had tried multiple times like taking those patches that stop nicotine or smoking electronic cigarettes (which are way better) but he still smokes. I can't do anything else and I really don't want him to die from lung cancer...

I have always been against smoking myself, many of my friends do it, be it cigarettes of something else, but I have made it clear I will not and never will and they are fine with it.

I don't see how smoking is badass at all, and I most definitely cannot fathom the thought that doing something that you know is dangerous is badass. To me doing something that you know is dangerous is more careless and stupid. Badasses aren't defined careless and stupid, and if they do smoke, that isn't what makes them badass

BTW I have nothing against smokers, except for the ones that do it in public because I FREAKING HATE THE DAMN SMELL OF SMOKE

I don't smoke, be there cigarettes, cigars, marijuana, or anything you can roll up and puff. I also don't chew tobacco.

  1. The toxic fumes from the rolled-up marijuana leaves and cigarettes smell absolutely nasty. When I smell that stuff burning, even if I don't see it, I can tell right away what it is. It makes me cover my nose and mouth and gag.
  2. Even without tax, cigarettes are extremely expensive. Just over ten years ago, they used to cost around two dollars. Today, they cost anywhere from eight to fifteen dollars. Even if I did smoke (which I don't), why the hell would I want to spend so much money on a pack when I could go out and have a nice, fancy dinner for that same price or less instead?
  3. Smoking is proven to have long-lasting, harmful effects, all of which are preventable. The more you smoke, the more you risk getting very serious cancers like lung, throat, and esophageal cancer; as well as such effects like losing your voice and losing limbs. If you smoke and don't get sick from smoking-related diseases/cancer at any point in your life, consider yourself lucky.
  4. Chewing tobacco isn't a cigarette, but their effects are just as awful. Tobacco contains nicotine, an antidepressant and the main reason why smokers are so addicted, and you seriously risk the same cancers as smokers. For example, baseball legend Tony Gwynn chewed tobacco and had two bouts of mouth cancer from it.
  5. On a personal level, smoking has had such a terrible effect on my family.

My grandfather from my mom's side of the family was a lifelong smoker and smoked Pall Mall unfiltered cigarettes; his fatal lung cancer metastasized throughout his body.

My dad, who was a heavy smoker but has quit since 2001, has strong asthma and needs a nebulizer; and his mom died from lung cancer due to her heavy smoking.

My step-grandmother, who never smoked, was around heavy smokers throughout her lifetime and died from secondhand lung cancer.

My mom started smoking because of my dad, but has since quit and hasn't smoked in over thirteen years, but she now has to have her lungs checked periodically.

It's the preventable and serious risks and past history why I have such a HATRED for smoking and don't allow smoking-related products (unfiltered cigarettes, cigars, marijuana roll-ups, e-cigarettes, and chewing tobacco) in my house.

its badass because you need courage to do that everyone who smokes dies

That reason is just plain lousy. There's nothing "cool" or "badass" about smoking under any stretch of imagination. There's no good excuse why you — or any smoker on this forum, for that matter — should shove preventable, rolled-up poison in your mouth and greatly risk destroying your lungs, throat, esophagus, voice, and limbs. It's factually two hundred twenty percent cooler and brave not to smoke.

i prefer smoking a pipe to anything else, maybe it's cos i'm a bit of a steampunk myself, but it's just better than any alternative.

Here in Colorado, cigarette smoking is generally frowned upon (at least by my fellow high schoolers) due to the increasing abundance of weed. After all, why smoke cigarettes when you could just get high?

To answer your question, no I do not smoke, and nor to I consume weed in any fashion. Though many of my friends do weed, who'd no doubt otherwise be smoking cigarettes. (neither of these look badass in my opinion.)

no offense intended when i say this, but this is what i mean from an earlier post, so i'm going to use it as a partial example.

Firstly, Sorry for the losses and other affects.

It sounds like your family has a known history of lung cancer at this point, and while the smoking obviously instigated it and made things worse, did it truly CAUSE it? This is where things get obscured.

Even with the asthma (not doubting thats where its from though) can simply be gotten by living near a highway or other high vehicle traffic area, or some place with excessive exhaust/smoke fumes.

Usually if you get it, you were already at risk for it, and its a self taken risk to increase your chances of it by choosing to smoke.

My great grandfather died at 93, smoked pure pipe tobacco since he was 13 (about 3-4 pipes a day no less... oye!) and had the worst case of black lung from working the coal mines since the same age.

But it wasn't cancer that did him in. Surprisingly  nor was it the black lung, it was simply age.

Again, not condoning smoking, not really defending it, but evidence so far is obscure and publicly screwed with to the point the finger is being pointed often at a risk raiser, and not the factual CAUSE. But anything we do from drinking water, to breathing the air is a risk raiser for any number of possible outcomes.

Only difference, smoking is a choice.

They need to re-open the investigations and find factual causes, and stop bothering people with the risk raisers. After all, so far we've confirmed water and hot dogs raise the risk stomach and colon cancers too... wait i'm sorry, they said they cause it... except thats not true.

Sry again, i'm just a bit miffed people are so busy pointing fingers at the risk raisers and such, rather than focusing on finding the true causes and cures. they're allowing the money makers to make even more money off this stuff, and scam artists to profit as well.

lets find the true causes, find the cures, and stop fear mongering the people like these things are the sole reason these viruses even exist! a warning is one thing, but this in your face badgering is just terrible and so much money wasted that could've been put to a cure fund.

Cigarettes? Nope, don't smoke them. Kind of ashamed to admit it, but my main reason for this is that they are SOOOO expensive! Here in Boston, packs can be up to $10! I imagine having a habit would drain your finances pretty quickly. Since they are so addictive, I'd worry that trying even one would cause a habit and then, goodbye hard-earned cash! I'm a student at the moment with a (very) part time job and there are much better things to spend my money on! And yeah, they're also bad for your health, of course (as people have already pointed out).  I think the financial burden of being a heavy smoker is less discussed, however.

Now, marijuana on the other hand...(if someone else paid for it - I'm cheap that way!)

Alcohol I'm trying to cut back on too (mostly a social drinker) because of monetary reasons and, more importantly, because EMPTY CALORIES!!!

Jeez, smoking is horrible! It smells bad, kills you and others around you and makes people like me want to look away, hold my breath and walk around you when I see you smoking.

Smoking is badass? Dude... Just stop. Nothing about smoking is badass. It's retarded. You waste your money only to buy something that gives you temporary calm and slowly kills you.

... that being said, yes, I smoke. I prefer cigars to cigarettes, but I find myself smoking cigarettes a lot nowadays.

lmao this comment

Anyways, no. I have never tried to smoke and I never will. Why would I want to do something that hurts my body? cause it's not like I sit inside on a chair staring at the screen all days And honestly I think it's disgusting.

Smoking ain't badass. It turns your teeth yellow, gives you lung cancer, wastes a ton of money, and gives you bad breath. Nothing sexier than bad breath...

Last time i checked, its not badass to induce cancer on yourself. Quite frankly, still can't fathom why people in this day and age would even start smoking in the first place. Back in the day when smoking was common, people didn't know it was bad and so many people started smoking for the "cool" factor. But nowdays, Its well known fact that smoking is extremely harmful, addicting, makes you smell/look gross, and is expensive. There are no positives coming out of it.

I don't smoke and have no interest in doing so, but if i was forced to smoke something, I'd rather smoke marajuana than cigarettes. Supposedly marajuana isn't harmful to your lungs like cigarettes, isn't addicting the same way cigarettes are, allows you to experience a high, and imo actually looks a bit more "badass" because you're rebelling against the law, so there's more of a "risk" of a run in with the authorities. And that's quite a stretch, marajuana is just as stupid as cigarettes are, but i can atleast understand the appeal in it. All in all, smoking is stupid.

Yea, Marijuana is far from addicting. I've had it a few times, and the only side effects  were a serious case of the munchies, and laughing at everything.Marijuana actually has medicinal benefits. Which is why they prescribe it to certain patients for eye problems.
