A message to the brony community

Honestly, the problems we have here are pretty damn tame. As someone who's used the internet since I was like 12(and actively used forums and such since I was 13, and am 21 now) I can say aside from a few users that tend to get a little heated over certain issues this place is down right saintly compared to some of the other places I've been and still hang around in. At least our heated disagreements are somewhat civil and don't degrade into random cursing and name-calling.

 

The thing to remember is no-one is perfect and even the best of us can have bad days. We are all only human and can't do anymore than our best. 

I miss the tolerance...

I say it open, for I'm open about being a furry and I got to hear (since I changed my profile pic and my about me to be open about it) what exactly a Furry is doing on a Brony forum quite a few times...

I don't suppose that this is meant as an attack, but if i remember right there is this thing called (love and) tolerance. Of course I'm aware that not everyone wants to act after it, and it's no requirement to be a Brony.

But respect is a requirement, and if you disrespect people for liking other things... if its clopping (oh my, i said the evil word) or being a Furry or whatever... then you should change your mind. Or leave. Now.

 

You're not alone, I'm pretty much one myself but I've kinda fallen out where I don't get into things past being into the artwork and such because of all the drama and shit-storms.

We can all hope to be perfect but it isn't going to happen. We're humans, after all. Plus, it is the internet and the internet seems to bring out the worst in people. While love and tolerance doesn't hurt, the brony fandom is one of the worst fandoms to represent that. I have met kinder people in other fandoms. However, it all just varies on the person, some have good experiences while some have bad experiences in a certain fandom.

 

I haven't noticed anything extremely awful going on around here but I haven't really been paying attention either. Are we perfect or full of love and tolerance? Hell no. Are we as bad as some other fandoms? Just depends. Not everyone is going to be extremely nice either. There are just some bad apples here and there, that's all. I do understand where you're coming from though, and I commend you on that. The World could use some more kinder people.

Just because we're bronies, doesn't make us perfect.

We aren't suddenly perfect just because we're bronies. We aren't given the duty to be kind and tolerating to everyone. We're fans of a show, and that brings us together. But we still fight. We're still humans.

I think you could be missing the happiness though as well. If you take a step back, you could see the kind and loving things people are doing and saying to each other. One kind act can overrule a hundred bad ones. That is what I think.

Yeahh, I agree, I've never seen much of a problem on here with that, and for all I know, I did see you personally attack someone two separate times, but that could be the only two times you've ever done that.

 

Then, there this morning with the whole "Should AJ be killed off?" Drama...

 

...then the other night on forum games where my friend got jumped for pretty much no reason.

 

Yeahh...those are the only times I've ever seen something start getting personal. I've gotten into a couple arguments, but I tried my best to keep kind about it and not get personal, and I know none of the people I've gotten into arguments on here with got personal with me.

I'm going to leave out his name but I'm fairly sure you can guess whom I'm talking about. So there might be a lot more cases I am not aware of. These matters seem to go under the radar fairly often, as long as PMing exists.

 

Frankly, I was really shocked when I heard that. Sure, there has been kind of a gloomy atmosphere around here recently, but to a point where some ponies would lash out at someone? No. Just no. That kinda shit is unacceptable. Love and tolerate might've been used for trolling purposes, heck I've been there during those days myself, but I thought we all kept those words close to our heart, especially here on the forums. We're a family right? Family loves each other, no matter you're black, white, purple, gay, or just have a different opinion.

 

I've been pretty upset about it, too. To think someone would do such a thing, makes me sigh in disappointment. I'm not saying we should blindly tolerate just everyone. But there's no need to start a dispute over differences in opinions. We're all reasonable human beings. That doesn't mean we should become upset about someone's opinion, that means we can come to a compromise. Live and let live, so they say. Don't you go forgetting.

 

I'm not buying into the whole "different personalities" hocuspocus. The only way that works is when people let themselves to slip into a defensive/hostile state through the production of endogenous morphine. Sadly, I'm seeing that a bit too much nowadays at places where it shouldn't.

 

So c'mon people. Love and tolerate, right? No one says it isn't possible, so why don't we work on it a little?

Anyway, I mean, can't speak much for Hollywood Krueger over there, because I've seen him get hostile a couple of times, but it was only twice, and he really just didn't handle himself that well. Not saying he's a bad dude.

 

Then the whole thing this morning was pretty...disturbing on both ends...It was awful. Ughh. Wish I'd never replied to that topic.

 

Then the other night, some idiots ganged up on my friend on one of the forum games.

 

Those are really the only 4 times I've seen a problem like this. Koelath's 2, this morning, and the other night. Other than those 4 times, everyone's gotten along very, very well, it seems to me.

Just gonna put my two bits into this.

 

I know this fandom is more civil and gentle when it comes to disagreements, but people also need to keep in mind that the fandom also has a larger number of kind hearted people, who do not bode well with any kind of offensive activity, myself included. We all need to keep in mind that we are all human, and we will all be a bit mad or mean sometimes. But so long as we remember that some people are more heavily affected by insults and lashing out than others. Its just who we are, it does not mean anyone is weak or anyone is wrong.

 

The issue that such soft-hearted people face is that everyone leaves a negative thread with a sour after-taste. So it should not be so much the perfectionist "Love and Tolerate" as forgive and accept. So long as we all reconcile in the end, then there is nothing to worry about.

I came on this site not only because I love the show, but the fandom was absolutely nice to me unlike some people. So I joined, and was having the best time here until I stumbled across a few terrible people, then I got a taste of the fandom that gives us a terrible input.  I don't understand why most of us treat everyone like garbage...it's just stupid. Treat others the way you want to be treated. Do they really think acting like a stubburn a-hole is getting them anywhere near respect? They can guess again.

Well, as i was told by some other kind people in the fandom, these people are just simply looking for an output for their negative energy when they themselves are hammered by people outside the fandom. The people on this forum are generally nice, but I think its more of a section by section thing.

 

For example, people on Octavia's Hall are really generous and kind, whereas the Everfree Forest people and the ones in the Debate Corner can be fearsome and downright rude.

We have blunt people, we have jerks, and we have people who are all of the above and more, but they are the book-definition of 'minority', unlike, I may say, many places found out there on the Everfreenet. Those who don't end up getting themselves banned for being a twit usually don't cause too much trouble, and certainly not to a point where one should feel the need to make a topic addressing the entire community.

 

But eh, what do I know. I'm probably talking from a perspective where moderation needs to get involved, whereas you may be coming from a simpler point on why people feel the need to argue, blame and bitch at each other about everything. It's because the brony community gets reminded that they're supposed to not be hypocritical about their actions, so they feel obliged to at least appear as they agree with this point, but will forget about the thread in about 3-4 days, and continue to be hypocritical.
