Dirigibles are awesome!

Steam aircraft are kicka**!!!!

This is an article from 1932.  History is insanely cool at times :P

In terms of what I've ever been in, I once took a ride in a helicopter over Mt. Rushmore when I was 14ish......It was really cool, but I'm scared of depths (not heights, that is a misnomer), so much so, I remember puking my brains out after the ride, and to this day, I never EVER want to get on a plane.......

should say, that I'm afraid of highs too...not too much...so even chopper and so on would I never do in reality

(Irony that my OC is a pegasi? XD)

I see where your coming from there.  Usually, the one thing I can't stand about flying, is my ears.  They pop so badly, it drives me nuts, lol

I just saw this trailer. I guess it's older than I thought but now that I know it exists I definitely wanna go see it.

Because flight is awesome in all forms. :D

And remember, Pegasi are the one true race because flight is their specialty.

Yeah.  Top Gun was a real exciting film including the Soundtrack.  Mighty Wings is by far, my favorite alongside Danger Zone.   I gotta say.....i really miss seeing the F-14 Tomcats.  Really fun to watch.

I can't believe no one has mentioned the SR-71 yet. It may not be the best plane, but it's definitely the fastest.

Yeah.....my favorite plane.  Not to mention......it comes in black, :D

There are much faster aircraft in existence! Though I think they are unmanned. And yes, I do mean aircraft and not a space shuttle or space probe.

I know faster aircraft exist. However, the ones that are faster (such as the X-15) aren't air breathing aircraft. Anything that is faster than the SR-71 is powered by rockets or some other experimental type of propulsion.

The blackbird is manned, jet-powered, and capable of takeoff/landing without assistance from some other vehicle. That said, I consider it to be the fastest aircraft in existance. It's the fastest conventional aircraft, at least.

Can't argue with that. One strange fact about the SR71: you have to be married to fly it (so you don't kill yourself or something). I saw a vid about it on YouTube explaining this stuff.

I should probably add helicopters and sky diving to the tags since they appear to be popular here as well!

I just had the opportunity to fly in one, mainly due to my uncle bringing me onboard. I was like.. 3, maybe 4 years old.

Probably another form of flying I do is GTA V flying. More specifically, on the fighter jet.

GTA5Jet.jpg

I am able to get it about 70% of the time unless the following happens:

-Tanks on the ground shoot me while I am attempting to get in the cockpit

-I fail to dodge a missile by enemy aircraft when airborne.

-The most annoying of them all: the "God Bullet". It comes out of nowhere even when you clearly see no aircraft behind you; it cannot be avoided; and can get you after a long way from the air base >_> .

Afffter I get the fighter jet, I like to blow up other players who are in the air with helicopters or small planes (I am a jerk!), collect bounties, fight enemy police choppers, or blow up people with stolen cars or who are walking.

Shit gets real when there is another fighter jet in the air, or when someone steals my arch nemesis chopper, The Buzzard. I'm able to kick ass in dog fights with other fighter jets, but the Buzzard is pretty difficult to destroy since you can basically only kill it when you're chasing after it (and then it has the chance to shoot you with oncoming missiles). It is not an easy target.

I'm skeptical. The U-2, RQ-4 and RQ-170 have many of the same ISR capabilities and fly sensitive missions, similar to what the Sled used to do (the fleet was decommissioned 20 years ago), and they have no requirement for their crewmembers to be married.

That said, I consider it to be the fastest aircraft in existance. It's the fastest conventional aircraft, at least.

The technical distinction is "fastest manned air-breathing aircraft". Other competitors in that speed field are manned rocket-planes, unmanned rocket-planes and unmanned air-breathing rocket-planes.

img-2377859-1-waverider-x51a-scramjet.jp

This is the X-51A "Waverider", a close cousin of the X-43 (which is the current record-holder for fastest air-breathing aircraft). It's top speed is more than Mach 6, but its qualification as an aircraft is dubious. Technologies of this sort tend to blur the lines between 'aircraft' and 'missile' due to payload qualifications involved. Its engine also doesn't work unless it's traveling trans-sonic speeds. It generates lift by riding its own shock cone.

The Space Shuttle can go so fast it makes the Blackbird look literally sluggish, but it doesn't qualify as a rocket-plane because it does not use its wings for lift during takeoff--they serve strictly for making the Shuttle a glider during landing.

I'm skeptical. The U-2, RQ-4 and RQ-170 have many of the same ISR capabilities and fly sensitive missions, similar to what the Sled used to do (the fleet was decommissioned 20 years ago), and they have no requirement for their crewmembers to be married.

If you were a Civillian contracted through the CIA to fly The Sled you had to be married. I suspect this would be for national security purposes, because, y'know, maybe the Missus would keep you honest or something. The USAF had no such requirements.

I can't recall a part of my youth that didn't have me enamored with aircraft in some way or another. Like how I fell in love with trains through steam, I loved planes through propellers. It started with some World War II classics like the B-17, Curtiss P-40, P-51 Mustang and who could ever forget the lovely lines of the Spitfire... But my interest grew and warped and went this way and that. I think I like every period of aviation succeeding the 1920s when things began to pick up speed (a-hyuk). Following a bit of interest from Chuck Yeager and the Bell X-1, I watched Tom Wolfe's The Right Stuff and that's when I fell in love with space travel as well. So , I'm with ya buddy.

I'm with ya buddy. SLS our way to LEO.

Though the Supermarine Spitfire, F-22 Raptor and numerous others are beautiful aircraft, I think one of my favorite looks has to be the Supermarine S6.B. Developed in 1927 for the Schneider Cup (Airspeed record with a twist: had to be a floatplane), it held the world airspeed record bar high at 430mph.

Supermarine_S.6B_ExCC.jpg

It was succeeded by the Macchi M.72 at 448 mph the next year. That speed record (Piston Power, ~450 mph in historical contestation with the Heinkel-100 and Hawker Tempest-V) stayed until it was beaten by Rare Bear in 1972.

<-- A username indicative of a love for flight.

That said, yes, I love to fly. I mostly love the velocity achieved from it, and the physical feeling of the wind surrounding you and embracing you.

I've been in airplanes, but it's not really any different from standing or sitting on a moving platform. I at least enjoy the feeling of actually taking off. It's tons of fun.

If you're interested in personal flight, the next best casual thing is to get one of those Oculus Rift thingamadoodles and try your hands at Rollercoaster Tycoon 3, assuming it'll run with it. You get to ride every single ride, including rollercoasters. Imagine the fun!
