If My Little Pony: FiM looked like G1, would you still watch it?

I think art is important. FIM's visual style and animation makes quite the difference. G1 looked horrible.

I have nothing against Gen.1 but I could not stand the animation, part of what attracted me to Gen. 4 was the designs of the characters. They are just much more pleasant to look at then the Gen. 1 was, as well as the animation seems like it would be much more restricting and would not work with the style of slapstick comedy that Gen.4 uses.

While I do very much prefer G4's animation, I watch it for the storyline and characters, not the animation. G1's animation wasn't even bad, it's just a different style. So yes, I would still watch it

i 100% agreed and might i add that a show shouldn't be called great for graphics or sounds but for story the same way dexter laboratory is better than regular show though regular show has better sound and graphics its story is nowhere near as funny as dexter laboratory which is why dexter's laboratory is a better show than regular show

I don't know. The lush and adorable designs of FiM is one of the bigger contributors as to why like the show. I'd still like it if it used the G1 style as long as it has the same characters, but I'd find it a lot less appealing

I would, yes. But, if the show had looked that way from the start on generation 4, I'll say admittedly my attraction to how curious I was of the show would have been less. In any case, becoming a brony wouldn't have been as easy. I only saw them at the time, I didn't know the plot. So, that may have stopped me a little. But currently if that happened I wouldn't be particularly happy but I'd still watch it for the other things.

I can't say for sure, since I didn't find the show for myself, a friend recommended it to me. So it would depend more on his reaction to G1 ponies than mine. I think he'd still get into it though. He liked the show for the meme.

I like the current generation because it has a lot of talented people working on it who truly CARE about their work. It actually has some substance to it-unlike a lot of "manufactured" mainstream "popular" shows out there these days- which I just find ironic and funny considering this show is BASED OFF A TOY and is surprisingly good!

 

ANYWAY

 

I never liked the G1 show animation because of its slow motion and low frame rate appearance and the "clunky" looking characters. G4 is much snappier and better looking. I've used flash a little in the past for animating and understand and can appreciate the effort that is put into this show. PRETTY MUCH ALL new cartoons use flash now. Look at the more popular cartoons and look how crappy they look in comparison. The thing that BUGS me the most is that CARTOONS SHOULD BE GETTING BETTER LOOKING. In flash when you create something you can save and reuse it!! This makes things easier than the traditional way of animating. INSTEAD the people making the newer shows are either extremely lazy or the companies producing could be just cheap and it shows BIG TIME. MLP does a GREAT job at keeping the characters from looking "flat" by putting A LOT of extra effort in making character models for MANY angles and animating joints, not by just falling back on stretching and skewing. I also really like how dynamic the characters are in terms of facial expression. That's something I really like- it helps make the show more believable i guess? It helps the story out by making you less aware of it's medium. One of my favorite "animated characters" is Gromit from Wallace and Gromit. He never says a word- but he never has to.

 

 

In terms of audio- I don't think the voice acting could be any better in this show. I can't stand the higher (obviously strained) squeaky type voices common in kids shows- especially older shows. That's why I like that the show actually casted children for the cutie mark crusaders. Most of the songs in G4 aren't too obnoxious either which is good. The voice acting in G1 is rather dull and annoying like the animation.

 

I also think the writing is very good for the show. The characters are developed well. I also like how the characters aren't stupid and that the show doesn't rely on "stupid" humor. Another aspect I like is that the Mane 6 are older. The conclusion I've come too is that they are late teens-early 20's in age but between 12(Pinkie)-20(Rarity) mentally. This is actually close to what Faust has said too.

 

 

The writing alone wouldn't keep me interested in the show if it sounded and looked like the G1-G3 versions. If a cartoon is too stupid- or sounds/looks too annoying/crappy I won't continue watching it.

I would. I think that G4 ponies are cuter, but I would still like the show if the models were all that changed. Though I have heard some good things about G1. So yes, I would still watch it.

 

Celestia would probably look like a real horse....

One of the things that made me fall for FiM was not only Twilight Sparkle, but how beautiful the land is, along with the theme song.

I think I would look it too, but I really prefer the actual style.

I think back then the G1 style was not ugly, it was just he way how cartoons was then. That‘s maybe one would now feel weird about the style. 

If the story is good, one may become to like something, even if the visual part is not one’s favourite. I see this with comics, some style I didn’t like that much, but when I started reading the comic, I still could love it.

Would I watch FiM if it was done in G1 art style?  Maybe.  I have nothing against G1, of course.  The thing is, I honestly don't think you'd have near the quality you'd have today.  A lot of what makes the show what it is happens to be the art style, specifically the facial expressions and animations.  I believe the character's faces play a huge role in selling the voice acting and making the characters feel more genuine.  I don't think you'd ever be able to pull it off in G1.

 

Of course if there were fans out there willing to recreate some episodes in g1 style, just to prove me wrong...I'd like to see that.

G1 is awesome. So if the show looked like it, and there would still be a crazy fanbase for it, count me in! 

But, if the show looked like the MLP the Movie 2017, then I would like it. Why? Design. G1 has great and cute looking design. The Movie doesn't, it is modified to take ideas from FIM, and ruined it with weird unneeded stuff, and odd facial expressions that didn't feel cute to me.

Does MLP need to be cute? No, but I wouldn't be here if it wasn't. But it also needs to look cool, else it is not interesting to a grown up man like myself
