Could The Mane Six Be Defeated By The Power Of Self Respect?

The show focuses on the magic of friendship (which is love basically) and says that friendship is the most powerful type of magic. What if someone possessed the power of self repsect because technically you could classify it as magic because it makes you happy and comes from nowhere until you find it in you.

 

It's plausible in a way because the show misses the fact that LOVE itself can only be made if you HAD self respect

I think the only one of the mane 6 with any form of self-respect issues is Fluttershy

First, there's no better way to respect yourself than to look at who your friends are and be happy with them; when you can look at the people (ponies?) around and say "Damn. I'm glad to have them as friends " Like they seem to feel about each other, then you respect yourself in the sense of being happy with where you are in life and who's in your life.

 

So, that leads to the second problem; since friendship is such a great way to gain self-respect, friendship should be able to overpower it. Think about it; you gotta have ingredients to get self respect, and friendship is a major ingredient to that recipe. If you're missing an ingredient, especially one such as major as having other people you care about in your life, you won't be able to make the delicious meal that is self-respect, or, at least, not make it to its full potential

 

So, sappiness aside, no, I do not think Self-respect can overpower the mane 6/friendship.

Good point. I don't think Self-Respect could beat the Elements because I don't think a self-respecting person would WANT to defeat the Elements. As something of an "introvert" (to use the current buzzword), I am a bit miffed sometimes by the show pushing friendship as the biggest deal, when there is actually nothing wrong with wanting to be alone. But just as I do not like my life to revolve entirely around my friends, I understand that some people do want that and I respect it. I think if Friendship and Self-Respect joined forces it would be the most unstoppable magic in Equestria. Could make for a neat spin-off, actually.

We'll never really know which magic is stronger because they're all metaphors based on abstract ideas, so their worth is subjective. In a show about the worth of friendship, friendship is the most powerful magic, but only because the writers made that decision.

I think self-respect could be the seventh Element, as it is an integral part of friendship. Like RuPaul says: "If you can't love yourself, how the hell you gonna love someone else?"

Yeeeah no I'm gonna have to disagree on that. I consider myself a worthless piece of trash and yet I still love people unconditionally, even if I have a weird way of showing it. I think the whole "you need to love yourself before you can love others" thing is just a meaningless slogan that sounds good as long as you don't think too hard about it.

If one understands that they have the capacity to love, that means that they acknowledge a positive aspect of themself, which means that they do not entirely lack self-respect. Unless they don't see love as a positive thing.

However, I agree, the Mane 6 have self respect, but when it comes to self-confidence, Fluttershy does lack that and indeed that is on a different scale.

I'd have to say self respect is stronger than friendship. It can be easy to fall back on your friends for help, but to do things yourself, to have that conviction, that determination and courage to follow through with something, that takes great strength.

Scott Pilgrim anyone? well, who knows, maybe they´ll show that someday, since the closest thing they ever done that was in Daring Don´t. It´s a very important lesson in real life (I know by experience)

If there was an episode around this theme I would make it so the mane 6 have to face there alter ego's and a major seventh element pony. These pony's are called the X'S and they must be defeated to save equestria. Hint Hint..
