Say as a human you lived in Equestria for awhile. And typical HIE happens, thus a pony develops feelings for and asks you out.

What would be best way to turn down a pony?

Assuming you still want to the pony's friend and totally not break their heart. Remember you are talking to a being who can feel and cry like a human, so if you turn her or him too harshly, (Like callimg them a flithy an animal) they may hate you.

For me, personally it depends which asks. If it were say Twilight Sparkle, I would be over joyed that a loser like me could get such a fine woman... mare. But nonetheless, I'll have my Commander Shepard face on and get all Mass Effect with the sapient alien cartoon pony.

If it was a pony I wasn't interested in, I would be very polite and calm about it, tell them I wasn't after them, suggest they try somepony else and stay on as just friends.

Given the comparatively similar intellect and social/communication nuances, I'd think it'd be pretty much the same as turning down a human girl?

Though, you have the benefit of being able to blame species boundaries, and can more easily get away with the bit of telling them that they're attractive and someone would be lucky have them, just not you.

Regardless, the point is to reject them gently, and make it so it's not taken as their fault, or that they're not worthy of it/beneath you, or that you're holding back because you consider yourself to be beneath them.

Gentle, kind, and conclusive.

How To Turn Down A Pony for Eggheads

A very simple guide on how to turn down a pony without him/her having his/her feelings hurt

Vol. 1

Step 1: Tell her you are not interested in him/her

You need to be subtle on him/her because emotions are very hard to control, try to balance it a little so he/she would understand

Step 2: Console with him/her

Tell him/her that he/she should find a somepony else and tell him/her that there are plenty carrots in the land.

Step 3: Cheer him/her up

Always cheer them up and don't just let them out of your door while they are in a bad mood, invite him/her over for some snacks and talk about the situation more

Step 4: Find the right time to let her in the "Friendzone"

Obviously you still want to be friends with him/her, so find the right time to say that "We are still friends, right?" or "Are we still friends"?

mostly it's best to say it when he/she is happy or found somepony else

If these steps don't work, then she is playing the "emotional drag" card. This is where they do something emotional and you are just dragged in to it because it also affects you. Well this card is like a Joker card, UNBEATABLE! I say just repeat all these Steps until she has no cards to play.

There are someponies that are just really obsessive or that they just won't give up, so the only way to deal with that is simple! Just follow a few steps and you are ready to go!

Step 1: Go to Sugarcube Corner

Step 2: Ask for some hot coffee

Step 3: Splash it on his/her face

Now this is the meanest thing to do to somepony who loves you obsessively but if you want them off your tail for good, just do this

If these Steps don't work on him/her, just get a cab and fly to Greenland.

So... got any problems, troubles, conundrums, or any other sort of issues, major or minor, that I as a good friend could help you solve?

I'm struggling to think of a reason I would turn down a pretty ponygirl that was inexplicably interested in me lol.  I mean, my heart belongs to a certain pegasus pony, but I doubt she'd return my affections were I to find myself in the fictional Equestria.  Also, what's the harm in going on a date?  Perhaps her feelings for me would wane during the course of said date.  Maybe I'd realize that my feelings for her were greater than I initially thought.  Maybe...  I'm overthinking this.  I revert back to my original response: it's a pretty ponygirl.

Tell them you have herpes.

Best solution ever! Why didn't I think of that?

Tell them you have herpes.

That's gonna come back to bite you in the flank lol.  What if you want to date somepony else?  And the pony you turned down lets slip that you supposedly have herpes?  It's better to say you have an inoperable brain tumor (immune to magic), and you don't want to drag her into the whole ordeal.  Then, later on when you inexplicably get better...  "It's a miracle!!1!"

I didn't say it was full proof, only that it works.

I agree with Rainboom.  Being polite and calm would avoid breaking ones hurt........

Now.....to break off from my waifu, Spitfire..................well, it won't be a good one:

"I'm a traditional guy, and you're just way too... horny for me."

I would put a reaction gif here if I had the ability to.

Seriously, just turn them down like you would any human? Politely and compassionately as possible.

Unless I'm actively dating somepony else or pursuing them, I probably wouldn't. I hate upsetting anyone, and I'd be willing to give almost any mare a single date. Who knows? They might end up capturing my heart in the end after all. Most of the ponies in the show are rather pleasant to look at, and I think most of them have really great personalites.

If it was somepony who I didn't want to do that with, they'd have to either be really mean and cruel, or have really poor hygiene. In that case I would turn them down like I would any human with those traits.

Twilight is best pony.

Nowadays this would be pretty straightforward: "We can't date; I'm in a relationship with the love of my life Rainbow Angelbaby."

The best way is simple and not very complicated:

"I'm flattered, but I don't feel the same way. I'm really sorry."

Badabing, badaboom. They'd avoid you for a while, but friendship will still be there.

This is like asking, "what's the best way to turn down a billion dollars?"

I can't fathom a situation where I'd be turning down a personal small horse, unless it's Mrs. Cake.....or Twist.

"Your cutie mark is wrong. Sorry, I can't imagine being with a pony who has [X] as a special talent."

Equestria. The only place where it's practical to stereotype by personality.

Not even Diamond Tiara?

It's a bug and a feature!
