general media Matt Taylor's shirt. This has gone too far
Abia replied to Zekromic's topic in Media Discussion
It was a very inappropriate shirt to wear to a public meeting. He really should have thought it through. I seriously don't think it was okay for him to wear that shirt to such a public, official place, and I do think he should have known better. However, it's a fine shirt to have and I've nothing against him wearing it. I'd even be able to wear it myself. He just chose a very, very poor time to strut his stuff. I expect poor sensibility from him far more than I expect sexism. -
Oh boy, I actually logged on in time to enter one of these things. I'll try something, been drawing a lot of ponies lately, so this should be fun.

No. Sunset asked for Twilight's advice the same way a friend would ask another friend what a text their crush sent them means. They aren't teacher and student: Twilight views Sunset as her peer, and I don't think she would feel comfortable mentoring a peer. Remember that Sunset Shimmer also scoffed at Twilight's current knowledge in the first movie, which might also increase Twilight's feelings of inadequacy as a teacher. The only place she's really been comfortable teaching is Twilight Time, which is a vastly different circumstance. Twilight wouldn't do well, I think, if she were to partake in such a formal title. She's a friend to Sunset, not a teacher; she can ask Sunset for advice just as easily as Sunset could ask Twilight.

I don't think we can assume that Unicorns have a longer lifespan than Pegasi or Earth ponies. Star Swirl was supposedly around to mentor Clover the Clever when Equestria was first founded, and was still around to assist Luna and Celestia hundreds of years later, even becoming Celestia's apprentice at some point (this was mentioned in the show, yes?). If Star Swirl is born in 1260, he is also around in 3342, when Equestria is founded, because he was there to help Luna and Celestia. Smart Cookie was also mentioned in the princesses' diary in addition to Princess Platinum. All ponies in Hearth's Warming Eve appeared to be about the same age, with the exception of Platinum, Puddinghead, and Hurricane, who were likely a bit older than their advisors. Assuming this, we can assume that Platinum, Puddinghead, and Hurricane were born around the same time, before Clover the Clever, and were still alive hundreds of years later when Luna and Celestia were appointed leaders. A lot of this is based on assumptions, but I do think that all ponies have similar lifespans, with the exception of naturally born Alicorns. (I do think it was confirmed that Twilight would not outlive her friends, meaning either unnatural Alicorns do not have unlimited lifespans or the rest of the mane six would become Alicorns alongside her. I really, really hope it's the former.) I wonder if anyone's chalked up Granny Smith being present for the founding of Ponyville and Ponyville being founded "hundreds of years ago" to Granny Smith simply growing delirious with age?

It's beautiful. But the first Rarity one is cut off before the circle can round off on its own.

MLP Forums Banner Contest II Poll
Abia replied to SkyBound's topic in Photo Finish's Magics (Visual Art)
I voted for #6. It's adorable, and I like it. I also personally think it's one of the better made on the list. -
Need some quick advice about a homework assignment. Writing a "sequel" to The Most Dangerous Game. I'm pretty much done with writing, but it's extremely short (only a page long) and I don't know how it will be received or whether or not people will know what I am trying to say through it. It'd be very helpful if someone had some spare time and just took a look and tell me what you think the ending signifies, if you got anything at all out of it.

Are Horns the Source of unicorn/Alicorn magic, or the conduit?
Abia replied to Buck Testa's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
I think you're right-- Unicorns have a unique way to express their magic, but will still have magic even if they are unable to use their horns. Compare it to Twilight Sparkle effected by poison joke-- she still has magical ability, but has no use of her horn. She's unable to put her magic into action, but she still has her cutie mark and she's still the Element of Magic, even with her horn out of order. -

I'm curious as to how people would react if there was something like this directed at Diamond Tiara, or some other nearly universally hated character of the show. I personally don't think this is all that bad. It's not good, but calling someone a disgusting person based on something they drew on the Internet isn't all that great, either. ...I mean, the creator acknowledges that the behavior depicted in this comic is hurtful, and also shows that he cares for Derpy--"doing hurtful things to your waifu", a title usually reserved for characters for which you hold some affection. It's not pleasant to look at, but I also don't think it warrants labeling the creator as a fucked up person. edit: It's not exclusively Derpy: there are charts of these for almost every pony, including Twilight, Pinkie Pie, and some OCs.... But on a lighter note, here's this.

What brought you into the writing community? I have always been a writer, but did not consider writing or reading fan fiction until a short while after I first joined the MLP fandom. I read “Cupcakes”, and just kind of continued from there. What was your favorite fanfiction to read or write? For instance, was there one that stood out to you or had an impact on your life in some way? Nope! “Discord Punches Twilight In The Face” was obsession-worthy for a day or two, but no stories have critically affected my life either positively or negatively. Is there anything you particularly enjoy about the world of Equestria that makes it special? For example, are you as interested in stories that may take place in other universes? Are ponies special, or do you prefer to indulge in other universes as well? Ponies are special; I generally stray away from reading anthro or humanized pony stories, and have yet to write one. The idea of cutie marks and Equestrian society in itself are pretty fascinating. There’s so much to explore, and being able to write about such lovable characters makes it even better. What do you get out of the writing process; what motivates you to read or write stories pertaining to the show? Is it a form of escape, is it to sharpen your skills, or is it to share stories and experiences? Perhaps any combination of those, or perhaps something else? I write fan fictions to sharpen my own writing skills— I’d love to be able to write individual works at some point— and to contribute to the community. I read other stories, I watch the show, and I am inspired to create something that will be as enjoyable to someone else as the show is to me. How would you define if someone is a brony or a member of the fandom? Does reading or writing stories contribute to the fandom at large? Does a sense of identity stem from it? Are there any fics that you would say are an example of what it means to be a brony? I've often heard people say that about My Little Dashie. Would you agree? No. Being a brony has nothing to do with the fan fiction community. It’s a label… if you deem yourself a brony, you are one, but you can also be labelled as or called one by someone else. It’s not a sacred title or one to be preserved; there is no such thing as a “true” brony. I associate part of my identity with being a brony. It’s how I’ve met many of my closest friends and the one thing I can get truly excited and intelligent about when discussing. It’s the ultimate ice breaker, for me— other conversations are often difficult for me to maintain, but identifying myself as a brony enables me to meet people I might otherwise not be able to. Reading or writing does contribute to the fandom, but it would still be a fandom without it. How often do the themes of the stories you encounter blend or contrast with those from the show? For example, do you usually enjoy darker stories (like cupcakes), or those that could easily blend in with the slice-of-life style of the show? I enjoy both extremes of the spectrum and little of the middle. Things that could appear in the show are great whenever I’m missing the show or waiting a gap between seasons, but more mature things also offer interesting glimpses into the behind the scenes world of Equestria. While I have my preferences, I really love any fic where the characters act like themselves. Is there anything you'd like to say to someone who isn't part of the fandom, but may be curious? Wait… people are actually curious about this fandom? My Skype is motorpoweredmagpie.

Magical Mystery Cure: What if Twilight Sparkle had failed?
Abia replied to Abia's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
Very true. The canon scenario is definitely the quickest and clearest option. I interpreted part of "Magical Mystery Cure" as saying that the mane six would have been perpetually depressed had Twilight not made right their destinies. But it just seems like they would be able to regain some happiness; when we see the mane six, they're at the end. They're failing. And Twilight Sparkle was failing; she wouldn't have gotten back that "spark" without Celestia sending back the letters. She couldn't do it entirely on her own, or at least it would have taken much longer. In that time, what would the mane six have done? As two were already in the process of losing their business, and essentially their life's work, their lives would have either been ruined or slowly rectified. But yes, it would have taken much, much longer; Twilight's success is definitely the best option. @@Shadowking58, I don't think she would have, since this scenario relies on Twilight's failure. -
Male Ponies' Jobs/Roles and Gender Equality
Abia replied to Wishing Star's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
It’s a show directed mainly (originally) girls, so it’s only natural that’s what the main characters would be. If we’re discussing Equestrian society itself… A pony’s job is determined by their special talent and cutie mark. There’s little to do with gender. Big Mac works on the farm just as Applejack, Granny Smith, and Apple Bloom, and everyone else who’s lived in that barn did or still does. Shining Armor is the captain of the Royal Guard. Braeburn and Sheriff Silverstar are two males who have a huge part in managing Appleloosa. Mr. and Mrs. Cake are equals. Pipsqueak was a prominent and likable character, if only for one episode (plus his appearance in “Twilight Time”). Flim and Flam are far less repeatedly antagonistic than Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon. Featherweight is not only a male but a runty male, yet he became editor in chief of the school newspaper. Fancy Pants is one of the most widely liked and respected nobleponies in Canterlot. Trenderhoof is a famous travel writer and played no antagonistic role in the show. Hoity Toity’s right up there with Photo Finish and Sapphire Shores. Filthy Rich is filthy rich. Cheese Sandwich is a renowned party planner. Doctor Horse and Doctor Sneeze are both male doctors. And then there are the background, non/rarely-speaking ponies…Crescent Moon participated in the Young Flyers Competition. Plenty of male and female ponies worked in the Rainbow Weather Factory. Bill Neigh is a schoolteacher or mathematician or something. Ceasar looks wealthy. …there are plenty of well-off male characters in the show. Just because they don’t have a prominent role in the show doesn’t mean they have poor lives as Equestrians. -
What if: at midnight everyone on earth became unicorn ponies?
Abia replied to Silverhoof's topic in Sugarcube Corner
Would there be chaos? Yes. Chaos would be mostly confusion, however, and panic over the new forms. I expect that bronies, or those familiar with MLP, would be the leaders of society, as they are aware of the limits of their new magic and could help teach others about it. How long would it last? Likely no longer than a few days. It would not be calm after that, but I don't think it'd be Black Friday for much longer than two or three days. What would or would not change? Not much wouldn't change. We'd have to re-scale a lot of our furniture. There would likely be a few wars over such a change; I'd expect at least one person to take advantage of all the chaos. What would your magic be? Limited telekinesis. The ability to magically interact with small objects, the largest of which being the size of a bureau at maximum. What would your cutie mark be? based on YOU, not a character. I believe I'd still be a blank flank. Rumors have floated that Celestia sightings have been spotted in a country near yours. Cool. Would you seek her out? No. There have been rumors of Bigfoot sightings in a country near mine, but I'm not doing anything about them, either. If you were shy before, would you be more confident now? I don't think so. It wouldn't be anything like living in Equestria, which is something that probably would reduce my real life shyness. I'd be around the same people. There would be no reason to change. -

Why do people think Tirek was the final antagonist?
Abia replied to ggg-2's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
Tirek kind of felt like a final antagonist, even if he wasn't. He was definitely the most powerful of all FiM villains we've seen so far (though I don't think he's most magically powerful, his manipulative personality is useful to his motives). ...but I wouldn't trust the Villains wiki. No wiki is very reliable, and that one's no exception. -
I don’t feel like retyping or rephrasing my counterargument for her behavior towards Big Mac, so I’ll just quote it. Pinkie Pie did not sabotage Big Mac. She bragged about her victory, but she didn’t force Big Mac to enter the contest, nor did she set him up to lose. They both tried their hardest to win the contest, and the best turkey call won. Rarity lightly scolded Pinkie, and the mane six clearly showed their disapproval of Pinkie’s behavior at the end. Pinkie also immediately went to rectify her mistake as soon as Twilight said she’d hardly said Fluttershy was great. It’s important to consider Pinkie’s background when discussing her special talent. She grew up on a rock farm where emotion was never expressed. Even after Pinkie threw her first party and the Pie family smiled for the first time— and it was physically difficult for them to smile, if you’ll remember— the farm really didn’t express much emotion; just look at Maud, who stayed at the farm for years after Pinkie had left for Ponyville. It’s likely that Pinkie was still the overexcited one even after she introduced joy to her family, which is why— well after she’s left the farm, and hasn’t seen Maud for years— she was able to read Maud so well. This is the kind of emotional display she’s used to, and I’m willing to bet it’s something she partially expects from other ponies. Pinkie never technically learned any emotional display other than and some kind of other negative feeling. The smile comes naturally to her, as it is a natural behavior. It’s possible that is what she thinks of as a default, or even positive, emotion— it’s possible she never learned that a frown or crying was anything bad. By no means did she have the same emotional education as the other ponies. Even Twilight was more socially learned when she lived in Canterlot. Pinkie Pie clearly can’t read others as well as others can read others. She didn’t recognize that Cranky Doodle Donkey wanted nothing of her even after he very clearly verbally expressed it. She really only wanted to make him happy; it’s possible she did not realize that she was doing the opposite until the end of the episode. It’s a similar case for Fluttershy, but Fluttershy never did verbally express that Pinkie was upsetting her. Crying was bad, but it could be something Pinkie never learned about, or did not appreciate the real meaning of.

What do you think of the Pony.MOV series?
Abia replied to Unique Pinkie Pie's topic in Sugarcube Corner
My favorite would be MAGIC.MOV. I love Twilight Sparkle's character and voice in PONY.MOV, and Spike's little speech about "everypony" gets me every time. Least favorite would have to be DRESS.MOV. I just don't find it as funny as the others. PARTY.MOV is also not a favorite of mine, though I enjoyed it immensely the first time around. I like the whole series. To be honest, the pony panels would have to be my favorite of all things .MOV related. Spike's description of Bronies and the idea of a Wolf Puncher game is fantastic. Not to mention the quick "this isn't canon" explanation of Rainbow Dash's appearance.
