  1. Don't worry. It's all imaginary.
  2. With a bit of interpretation Regulus's post can be used to find a second place in the chain where the same trick gets pulled, which I missed the first time around.
  3. Really, the fifth? This just applies the rule sqrt(a/b) == sqrt(a)/sqrt(b ), which I believe holds for all a and b where b is non-zero. I think the fifth equality looks sound. I'd say the 6th one is the bad equals sign. The sixth one implies that: sqrt(1) == 1 sqrt(-1) == i But actually: sqrt(1) == 1 or -1 sqrt(-1) == i or -i The "or" bits have been conveniently forgotten, and the rest of the chain just assumes the square roots are equivalent to 1 and i respectively.
  4. Most big chain stores won't sell you Linux-based computers because they're locked into exclusive deals with Microsoft and/or Apple. But it's relatively easy to download a copy of Linux (it's free!) and install it on whatever computer you have, either replacing your current operating system, or installed alongside it so you get a choice of which OS when you boot up the computer. In terms of how popular it is, it depends on what you're looking at. Desktop computers? Servers? Tablets? If you look at supercomputers - the really big number crunchers - Linux is pretty much the only game in town. Of the top 500 supercomputers in the world, 485 run Linux; 2 run Windows; none run Mac OS X. (What about the other 13? Well 12 run some version of Unix, and the last one is apparently "mixed".) On servers, you're looking at about an equal three-way split between Windows, Linux, and the "everything else" category. The "everything else" category is mostly Unix variants like FreeBSD, Solaris, and yes, a few Mac OS X. On desktops and laptops, Linux is a bit of a niche - about one or two percent of the market. Mostly used by fairly technical ponies like me. In the "embedded space" - i.e. the software that powers various things you might not even think of as computers, like TV set top boxes, medical equipment, factory machinery, etc - Linux has been steadily gaining usage, and has about a quarter of the market. In the past pretty much every manufacturer wrote their own custom OS for their own equipment, but they're starting to see the benefits of just customizing Linux instead. Amongst tablets and smartphones, Linux has almost 50% of the market. Surprised? Well, once you realise that Android is a heavily modified variant of Linux, it doesn't seem so surprising. Frankly I think the comic has it all wrong. Sweetie Belle seems more like the stereotypical Mac user. If one of the CMCs is a Linux user, I'd assume it would be Scootaloo, or perhaps Applebloom.
  5. They don't appear to eat with spoons but they use them for other things. Here's Pinkie Pie measuring out some vanilla to make cupcakes... And this looks like a spoon she's using to stir the mixture... And what's that being used to serve the punch?
  6. OK, here's a cute picture of Celestia as a foal. It's based on a picture I found on deviantart but I've edited out the cutie mark. (Her possibilities are, like, endless!)
  7. Cuddle. If it looked cuddly anyway. Tirek is a small equine creature, but he doesn't look cuddly. I wouldn't want to cuddle him.
  8. I voted Twilight, but Cadence is a close second.
  9. For the time being, I'll assume that alicorns are allowed.
  10. For the purposes of unicorn club, do alicorns count? If unicorn club excludes Twilight Sparkle just cos she grew some wings, then I can't count myself in.
  11. We've also not seen any marital sex, so I wouldn't read too much into the lack of extramarital sex. For that matter we've not seen any urination or defecation scenes. We've not seen any cello manufacturing scenes, yet we know they must make cellos. (Octavia plays one.)
  12. Bonfire night tonight. And I just saw a rainbow on the way home. Yay!

    1. Steelstallion

      Steelstallion

yay rainbow! before all of this happened i used to look at rainbows as light being refracted into the visable spectrum (nerd moment). Now i look at them as a symbol of Peace, Happiness, and Harmony!

  13. Cool, so it's like a hotel for monsters?
  14. You people really need to watch something like this Youtube video. The UK has a variety of very, very different regional accents, some of which are lovely and melodic, and some of which are... shall we say rather inelegant. If you want to hear a cute accent you should check out the BBC's adaptation of the Katie Morag books (there are some on Youtube). The girl who plays Katie Morag is from Glasgow, but nevertheless gets the Scottish Highlands and Islands accent pretty much spot on.
  15. My phone wallpaper is attached. I'll freely admit to being a fan of the show, but I don't have any particularly great desire to bang on about ponies to anybody that I don't think will be interested.
  16. This is one of those historical "facts" that everybody seems to "know", but is totally false. Catherine the Great was a pretty effective ruler, and quite openly had many lovers. Both these facts led to a certain amount of resentment amongst the aristocracy, who at the time tended to think that female monarchs should be quiet little women who deputized the running of the country to male advisers. In that kind of environment, ugly rumours can get started. The real truth is that she died in her bed, after having had a stroke on the toilet. (Strokes, heart attacks, and other infarctions suffered on the toilet are not uncommon.) Rather an embarrassing way to go, but not as bad as the rumours. ~ ~ ~ Although I don't think Flash and Twilight are likely to have a baby in the series, if they did, I think the obvious choice for baby names is: Celestia and Luna Two little alicorn foals, born a few years apart. Of course, during their infancy, some big villain would then come along, and to antagonize Twilight the villain would separate Twilight's dear foals from her by sending them back in time several thousand years,
  17. I really can't see them making much of the Twilight Sparkle / Flash Sentry relationship in FIM. Yes, we like MLP, but we're not really the primary target audience. The target audience is 2-11 year old girls, and adding a romantic relationship into the plot line is likely to alienate a large part of the younger end of that demographic. (And from a commercial perspective, the younger end is the more important to keep on board - they're likely to remain fans for longer.) Theoretically they could add the relationship, but gloss over it as "not really a big thing". But that would seem artificial to me. How can a romantic relationship of the story's protagonist not be a big thing when the whole plot of the show is based on relationships? In a potential EG3, sure! EG is aimed at an older audience, so they could go there. If they did, they wouldn't necessarily need to work the relationship into FIM too - the two Flash Sentrys are in fact different characters in different universes, and haven't been shown to have any knowledge of each others' existence.
  18. Look at the angle the purple one is posing her head at. And... she's... looking... at... me! Somebody save me!
  19. Any chance you could do one for this filly? (I haven't come up with a name for her yet.) She's called Vital Spark. She's super-brainy, cute as a barrel of kittens, and occasionally a bit of a prankster. I couldn't get the hair colour quite right in pony creator. It's intended to be a little like this but with blonde streaks. Thanks!
  20. Favourites: Welcome to the Show (Or the Rainboom parts of it anyway. While the shrieking makes sense in the plot of the film, it's a little unpleasant if you just want to listen to some music.), Under Our Spell, and Shake Your Tail. Least favourite: Awesome As I Wanna Be and Bad Counter Spell.
  21. This is just an outline of an idea. If I had loads of time on my hands I would write it as a fanfic, but alas that is not the case. Queen Crysalis journeys to Tartarus to free Tirek, and along the way discovers a severely weakened King Sombra. She explains her plan to them: the ponies have defeated them all by uniting with each other, but they should be able defeat the ponies by working together. Meanwhile in the human world, Fluttershy, Pinkie, Applejack, Rarity, and Rainbow Dash are preparing to go on holidays, each with their respective families. Sunset Shimmer doesn't have any family in the human world, so instead she's got a summer job working for Princess Celestia, doing various odd jobs around the school. (She'd done a good job rebuilding the ruined school after EG1.) Back in Equestria, Tirek, Sombra, Crysalis, and hundreds of changelings descend upon Twilight's castle. Before the ponies can use the magic of friendship against them, Tirek uses magic to imprison them all in cages, and send the cages to the ends of Equestria. They're too far apart to use the magic of friendship. However, Spike manages to deflect the beam of magic aimed at Pinkie, allowing her a few precious seconds to escape up a tower. She is pursued by Sombra. She finds herself in the room with the mirror, and with nowhere else to go flees through it. Sombra enters the room to find it empty. Pinkie emerges in the human world, panicking, and runs straight into Sunset Shimmer. Together they hatch a plan to get the human Fluttershy, Pinkie (can't have Too Many Pinkies, right?), Applejack, Rarity, and Rainbow Dash together to go to Equestria and defeat the evil alliance. The hardest part will be finding the human Twilight Sparkle and convincing her. Cue various scenes of them going to fetch the girls. To convince human Twilight Sparkle, they play a song together and become half-ponies. The girls line up and go through the portal, emerging in Equestria as ponies. Sunset Shimmer comes too. They find the land covered in swarms of changelings, but manage to defeat them and Queen Crysalis quite easily. The rainbow magic that radiates from Canterlot frees the real ponies, and they are swept back to Canterlot. Magically. Sunset Shimmer helps free Princesses Celestia and Luna from the cocoons they'd been imprisoned in, mending the relationship between Sunset and Celestia. Pinkie to camera: well, that took less time that I expected. [Audience looks at watches: hmmm... yes... it did. We were expecting at least another half hour to this film.] Twilight asks the inevitable question, "but where are Tirek and King Sombra?" Celestia: "But I thought you knew...?! They followed Pinkie through the mirror!" The humans, Sunset, and the Mane 6 go to Earth to find Tirek and Sombra preparing some kind of evil plot (I'm a little fuzzy on the details). The Mane 6 try to use the magic of friendship to defeat them, but it's not powerful enough in this world. The humans and sunset try to use rainbow magic, but that doesn't work either. But using both together (I'm guessing all standing in a line, ponies one side, humans the other, Sunset in the middle) works. Yay.
  22. EG1 certainly indicates that Sunset Shimmer was Celestia's protégé before Twilight Sparkle came along, suggesting she's older than Twilight. I don't think this is necessarily a plot hole. Rather that when you're jumping between two parallel universes, you cannot be assured that their timelines will correspond perfectly. Not only could one timeline be moving faster, but they might not even move at consistent speeds relative to each other. Consider the Chronicles of Narnia. In The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe the children spend decades in Narnia, but return to Earth of the same day they left. C.S. Lewis' Narnian timeline shows that year 1 in Narnia corresponds with 1900 on Earth, year 300 in Narnia with 1930 on Earth, and year 1000 in Narnia with 1940 on Earth. So between 1900 and 1930, 30 years of Earth time corresponded to 300 years of Narnian time (a 1:10 ratio), but between 1930 and 1940, 10 years of Earth time corresponded to 700 years of Narnian time (a 1:70 ratio). Frankly if you're jumping between universes, expecting timelines to match up is simply being unreasonable! You should just be thankful that the laws of physics are roughly the same in each universe.
