  1. Well at the moment I'm running: Windows 7 Professional (64 bit) Ubuntu (virtual machine), Debian Linux on my other computer and also the Debian (squeeze ARM build) on the raspberry PI) I think all systems have thier place and purpose. Mac OSX is also fantastic, though I don't use it much myself. I don't own a Mac but run a virtual machine running Lion. Linux is usually a pain to setup! Throughout the last 15 years I've run Mandrake (now called Mandrive), Red Hat, Suse, Slackware, Mint, Debian & Ubuntu and NOT ONE had an installation disc that didn't crash and burn horribly with my hardware (leaving me to fix+install manually for at least part)! BUT this is all part of the fun! once setup correctly, Linux will usually be very stable day-in, day-out and (most importantly) you learn throughout the process so when something does break, you usually have at least a fair idea how to fix it! The part I love most is the hacky scripting command prompts which you can usually do almost anything with. Downsides are that it isn't as fast as others and can seem daunting to new users. Windows XP and Windows 7 work fine 9/10ths of the time, are lightening quick and of course have the latest software and games. Downside is when it crashes you rarely have any idea as to why! Vista I never liked and was also a lot buggier and I've yet to be convinced that Windows 8 is the way forward! OSX on the Mac combines both speed and stability and is incredibly user friendly so very easy for people to pick up and use. I think cost might be the only.downside I can think of besides not all software being available right away on the Mac. It's great to see such a diverse range of different OS is use here!!
  2. I have thought this exact same thought ! and you know, I believe the answer may be quite simples! Other species are forced to seek an equilibrium with thier surroundings...if too many of one particular animal exist then its food supply becomes short for them and survival more difficult! Then another animal (further up the food chain!) would likely adapt and start eating the overgrown population one until balance is restored along the food chain. THEN ALONG COMES HUMANS! We industrialised our food production and begin transporting our food around the globe to where it is needed. We create 'society' as an invisible set of rules we all try to enforce which allows even our weakest to survive. As a result our population explodes and there is absolutely no force of nature (it seems!) that will keep us in check. The urban sprawl is really more of a habit we have got into over generations of populations exploding and us realising (unconciously) there are basically no consequences to our actions. I have even wondered if events like the Black Plague were necessary consequences of the system trying to correct itself. Of course the big fear now is that if we do not take care of our environment, our environment may take care of us and not in a good way! Maybe its important for us to remember that the Earth has been around an lot longer than we have and will certainly outlive us by several billion years
  3. I was really worried when I first heard about a possibility of a Twilight Alicorn - it seemed so inconsistant with the rest of the story (up to now, its been implied that Alicorns are a separate race). I have actually warmed to the idea over time...but if there is too little explanation...but even then I'm skeptical.
  4. All this talk of Lyra Heartstrings inspired me...and I wrote a tribute song for this amazing pony I call: 'I Love Strings'. I wanted to start out with an instrument that sounded something like her Lyra might do, a then have it explode into a sort of electro sound. As this is now the official Lyra Heartstrings fan club thread, I thought here would be a good place to share Hope you enjoy! (sorry the video was rather hurriedly put together!) I Love Strings - Tribute to Lyra Heartstrings Lyra is best pony!
  5. Just finished the first draft of a song dedicated to Lyra Heartstrings! https://soundcloud.com/thefraj2002/i-heart-strings I may tweak it a bit further yet ;)

Not bad. I'm confused as to why so few write songs that are no more then a minute and a half...

should put on the pony.fm site and have feld0 add you to the alpha testing.

  6. Wow, we get a little profile feed too! :grins: i wonder what this button does...

  7. At 30, I'm far too old to be enjoying ponies!,(just glad I'm not the only one this age here! hehe Yes, growing up and getting old sucks, but it does have a lot of benefits too. You earn your independence - at the cost of your freedom. You can do anything you like - with the hour or so you get before bed each day. You have plenty of money coming in, but end up with no cash to spend on things you want. etc etc All this causes stress and burn out working for The Man. And amongst all this, its easy to forget who you actually are! Stress has almost killed me on a number of occasions, and being here with you guys and enjoying MLP:FiM let's me reconnect with my younger self. It offers a temporary retreat from all the silly nonsense going on (out there) and let's me escape reality briefly. It works a lot better than the alcoholism hobby I was - and occasionally still do enjoy! Of course there are some genuine good points to getting older too! For me, the best part is how the world gets gradually less scary and eventually you learn to deal with most sutuations that would've upset you when you were younger (Only problem is now, the problems coming in tend to get bigger and meaner too!) But it definitely isn't all bad!
  8. Haha that's awesome! Lyra is a wonderful pony and I've been falling in love with her for the last 24 hours since adding her to my MLP:FiM game lol. I'm really glad someone started a thread for her - she really is an under appreciated pony. I have to say: I really like her mane! (too, of course!) A lovely minty colour and her little face is just so cute. Her tails pretty cool too! I wonder what her personality is like? Do we know? She looks like a happy, outgoing pony who is also kind and has a gentle spirit. I think Lyra is best pony
  9. When I was small, my mum was a Jevhovah's Witness, so I mingled with them for a few years. They are nice people, but one day I said I didn't want to be a part of this anymore - mainly due to their lack of trust and suspicion in technology and computers (As an aspiring programmer this didn't sit well with me!). I discovered Buddhism (SGI) and got involved with some great people there. I drifted out of practice more through lack of motivation than anything. In the last few years I've been openly using the label 'atheist'. I just wanted to give you an epic brohoof there Melancolic Memory! I recently discovered discordanism and a more recent 'parody' incarnation Church of the Subgenius, when I realised that the answer to life is simple dear friends - SLACK. I realised the reason I was unhappy was because those pink 'norms' had stolen all my original slack by asking me to get up each morning and go to work for THE MAN! Hehe also one of the leading speakers is Hal Robbins (Harry S Robins) - who's voice you guys will know as playing 'Doctor Kleiner' in Half Life video game series! I mean - who can resist a religion where I get to listen to him speaking on a regular basis? Lol Yet amongst the silliness, I also see a very valid argument that our world is order that was born out of chaos. Alan Turing did a lot of work in this area, showing how random patters in animal mutations can seem to start forming 'order'. Without this randomness in the universe, we would not be here. Just as light can only exist in dark, so Discord is a necessary part of the world because without it, harmony would be meaningless.
  10. Oooh ooh a tough one! For me, it would have to be one of the early pioneers who popularized electronic music, Jean Michel Jarre: Oxygene VIII It is a haunting sound, when I listen, I always see images of Earth, cycles of life, death, awareness of consciousness and it seems to say something about the nature of the human condition. OR I suggest " Requiem Dies Irae " part of: Mozarts Requiem in D Minor It sounds like a cataclysmic end of a system - perhaps an epic political revolution or something similar.
  11. Two times - both around 40 and 35 hours. Hehe the longest was almost 40 hours - on a flight back from St Paul Minneapolis airport to Manchester (UK) - storms were sweeping in from the south and most flights were cancelled - and I missed a connection in Chicago O'Hare International where I needed to change. After a brief (but friendly!) argument with one of the staff they were able to reroute my journey via London - had to wait another 12 hours for this though! Then get another flight from London Gatwick (An Awful awful airport! Lol) to Manchester. By the time the key turned in my front door it was about 40 hours since I had awoken at my hotel in St Paul! Also it was the middle of the day which was really starting to mess with my head BIG TIME! In my final year at University, I worked through the night to finish my dissertation (due in the next day) then I remembered there was an important task I needed to be on campus first thing for - by the time this was over it had been a little over 35 hours.
  12. Hehe well, English is my native language, and I can speak/read/write a little Japanese - though occasionally a bit broken I can usually make myself understood! Sometimes with funny results! Lol
  13. Provided they keep up the great quality of the writing and introducing new ideas - I can easily see MLP:FiM lasting as long as The Simpsons ..(which I make to be around 23 years at this point!) If there is ever a reason for the decline of the writing, as Aquila says I suspect it would come through external forces (board / marketing / commercial decisions) meddling with Lauren Fausts perfect recipe. If I think back to when The Simpsons were new - I knew i loved the show right away but could never have imagined just how long it would run, how it would shape the genre itself and how it would grow and develop. I really hope the same happens with MLP and that we'll be able to look back fondly at the early episodes with that same feeling.
  14. Firstly, you are certainly not too old to learn new skills! But yes there is a lot to it. If you already play an instrument, particularly one with a keyboard you will have a good starting point! Then there's all the electronic side of thing (compression+side chain, reverb, arpeggios, gates and stuff). A lot of this you can pick up from some good tutorials online. Even learning how to setup your first synth for dubstep as I did for the first time last weekend can be simple enough to stumble through, though getting good is another thing altogether. With enough patience and enthusiasm you stand a good chance. But it will take time!! A lot of time! (or extra hard work) However - I particularly wanted to help regarding you PC/Mac dilemma! A Mac is a great machine and you can run all PC software using either Bootcamp ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1461) or Parallels ( http://www.parallels.com/) . I'm not a mac user myself and not sure how much they cost. But I will bet you its a nice cheaper alternative to buying a whole new PC. But you will need some technical skill to set that up (also, be sure to check your system is up to spec, fast enough and also that you have enough space on your drives (bearing in mind your system will have a full installation of windows on it (usually start around 10Gb fresh and will balloon to much more as you use it!) Also, Ableton is one of the better music production tools used by professionals and is available for both Mac and PC. I suspect it will be more expensive than FL Studios but will certainly do everything you need. There is also Cubase (I think is also avaiable for Mac, but not certain) which I think may even be better still, though I've never used this one myself! But yes, there are a lot of options. if you need a PC for other reasons, this might still be a worthwhile investment. But I definitely recommend not getting it just for one program though. Good luck!

    movies/tv Twilight Zone

Twilight Zone original series FTW!! Epic brohoof Dusty - my housemate and I went on a Twilight Zone marathon a while back and it was an awesome journey ...but you're asking me to choose just ONE!? That's like asking Pinkie Pie to choose between two different parties! It just can't be done!! O_o But here are my top few favourites from the first (1958) series in order: I shot an arrow into the air (ep 15) What you need (ep 12) One for the angels (ep 2 A nice place to visit (ep 28) What does it for me is a story that casts human nature in a strange light and shows just how irrational and crazy we can be ! I think part of the appeal is the broad spectrum of sci fi too - everything from aliens to angels to seemingly mundane situations that turn out to be something else entirely!
  16. I was wondering about this myself the other weekend...a friend I hadn't seen in a while dropped by and I felt duty bound to help him experience ponies. I tried "Party of One" as like many others in this thread I felt it was a good one, quirky, funny and easy for anyone to enjoy. Sadly fellow bronies and pegasisters i failed and didn't convert him ;_; but he did seem to enjoy some PMVs I threw on later, especially the ones with original music as this friend also does a fair bit of music producing himself But yes I think: Party of One, Lesson Zero, Return of Harmony (if you have time!) Also I actually thought the first episode of season 1 was good to start with (though perhaps not as visually impressive) it does give a really nice overview of the universe and an introduction to each individual ponies personality.
  17. Hi Bruno I'm an older brother (6 years older) than my only younger brother and it makes me happy to hear you say that you still love your older brother ... even though you fight and argue sometimes! Both my brother and I are grown up now, but when we were living with my parents I gave him such a hard time. I would tease him about the childish tv shows he would watch and we used to fight a lot (over who's turn it is on the computer etc) and I would generally torment the hell out of him. But we did also enjoy some awesome times, played some great games and had fun. My brother now lives in China and it has been many years since I've seen him. I wish I could go back and tell him I love him. I wished I'd have been nicer, bought him nice things he couldn't afford ... been there to offer advice and help him deal with things. I guess in a way I was...but I could have been a much better bigger brother. You only get one family! Treat them well, and make sure you tell them you love them!!
  18. Pretty much any of the Quake I music tracks (all very awesome, and creeps me out to listen to!): Hehe, either that or Spieluhr by Rammstein also comes to mind:
  19. Dragons Breath / Dragon Lord - this game existed for a couple of months back in the 90's - the company that wrote it (Palace Software) went bankrupt very shortly after - so you could not buy it! (of course the Internet was not really suited to sharing it back then either!) There has never been a game like it before or since, it was available on the Atari ST and Amiga and it was FANTASTIC! Basically there are three magic alchemists who own and bread dragons - incubate their eggs, train them, cast magic spells, have them rescue princesses on a mission, conquer regions of the map, build cities, use them to demand tax from people and extend your control of the world! In this sense it was really an early forerunner to something like Pokemon or some sort of virtual pet - the dragons got sick, fought each other for control of territory and often died in battle! I cried more than once as a kid!! Lol You could have up to three players (human if you wished) which added a whole new dimension. This montage I put together myself, and I believe it is one of the only videos of it's kind on YouTube. TL:DR ... just take a look http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgpIEkTbphE
  20. Your dad's health is not your fault - he has been having problems since the 90's, long before any of this (and the cause of the heart condition would likely have been years before this!). If he wasn't stressed about MLP it sounds as though it would be something else he would be worrying about! So none of this is your fault. As everypony has said you are a great success in school and should be very proud of where you are today, so keep up the excellent work and always look to challenge yourself! The experience you have in C++/C# will go a long way if you decided to be a programmer! Python doubly so! Java too - (even though I don't agree with it myself!) hehe just kidding I've been in I.T. a few years and with these types of skills you can get a very well paid job where they treat you just right. Focus on your career and the next step - think about what will make you happy, develop your skills and all of this will matter less and less with time. Your dad doesn't understand MLP and it probably frightens him. From what you say, it sounds like he is worried about the effect it will have on you and your future. He shouldn't of course! But for now, I recommend not mentioning MLP around him until things change. But being happy in yourself is very important. I'm here for you too broham if ever you want to talk. just remember all your achievements and look to the future.
  21. Hehe about 30 seconds ago - I always hug my housemate before bed! I love hugs and get them wherever I can...usually with friends. I've always wanted to hug Fluttershy
  22. Hehe well, here we are at 20 replies and totally flameless! which is a good sign so far hehe so i thought is quickly share my take on this: Twilight - Agnostic/Athiest Fluttershy - Zen Buddhist Pinkie Pie - Church of the Subgenius Applejack - Evangelical Christian Rarity - Maybe Jewish or Athiest Rainbow Dash - Maybe either non practicing Christan / Athiest Also I wanted to say - the fact many are agreeing on some of these, despite there not being any direct mentions of religion in the show just how well developed the characters are!
  23. Wow! What a great episode! So many different things I loved about it after watching it again this morning... I'm really starting to love the Cutie Mark Crusaders and their wonderful little organisation. I have never really connected or felt for them quite as much as I did in this episode. Just how could anyone stand to see Applebloom upset? Or Sweetie Belle cry? My heart almost broke after their float had been trashed! Bab Seed covering her flank with her tail was just adorable and also quite a realistic reflex that has come from a lot of bullying! The song and video montage that went with it was very catchy and possibly one of my favourites in the show so far. Overall, the episode did an excellent job of exploring bullying in a complex way - quite ironic given the BronyState hack, but hey - also some interesting observations from everyone (RE: Dr Hooves / Pear Costume). I laughed out loud when I saw Pinkie Pie reading her mag on the sofa - it was just crying out to be turned into a macro! Fun times everyone!!! Lets hope many more to come!!
  24. I actually agree, it would make perfect sense for a magic unicorn type pony to be more vulnerable to both dark influences and even other magic attacks. My first thought was of Star Wars, that a Jedi's powers can be twisted and made to serve the dark side through undesirable impulses - greed, hate etc. (Someone who does not know the force can obviously not be turned to the dark side). For this reason, I think a magic unicorn type might be more prone to turning evil. Also, magic antagonists probably also give the story line a more unpredictable quality - we never know what kind of horrible powers could be unleashed!
  25. A really interesting question! At first I was going to say no, here is why: Being innocent on the surface allows MLP to deal with some emotionally complex dilemmas and social situations in way that everyone can understand. Many episodes have an underlying theme that can include some quite grown up topics such as racism (Bridle Gossip S01E09), and of course the viewer is challenged with all sorts of interesting inter-personal dilemmas and choices along the way. Then Again: By rewriting the shows content for adults only, it loses this ability to connect universally. However, the trade-off might be worth it if the adult version allowed the writers freedom to explore even more controversial and emotionally charged topics. I imagine keeping the humor - in an adult style similar to Friends, but with the show content dealing with some taboo subjects (such as gay marriage, family feuds, religion vs abortion etc etc). Of course, this would be a totally different kind of MLP show and not the one we all know and love! The downside would be a western misconception that cartoons are only for kids And this would make the adult version immediately less accessible to the adults it would target. But you never know, having experienced Simpsons, Family Guy etc etc, I suspect an adult version would likely acquire a fan base, but I reckon it would not be anything like it is now!
