Griffons - where are they from?

Just like the title says. I recall Gilda was taking flight lessons with RD being brought up, but what about the Griffons who participated in the Equestria Games? Are griffons citizens of Equestria then?

They come from the Griffon Gorge possibly huh, doesn't look like what i had imagined...

Maybe that's just a Griffon settlement

Here's a map of Equestria:

Maybe not important but it's written "Grifrins" not "Griffons".

Hey, I didn't draw the map. I assume it's a mistake. :P

Or maybe Grifrins are another creature altogether?!

I'd guess Griffons comes from the Griffon Kingdom but also are citizens of Equestria, because, like you said, griffons participated in the Equestria Games :D

I'd guess that the Griffon Empire used to be their own separate empire before it was absorbed into Equestria by way of conquest or an economical matter :D

Hopefully season 5 will elaborate on the griffins more. I know a lot of people want to see Gilda return.

Well you see, after the disaster at Ionith in the 3rd era, the imperial forces were forced into a hasty retreat. Loosing their commanding general during the counter attack at Ionith, the Empire instead made a economic treaty with the land, with a few of its more prosperous members even becoming councilors to the Emperor.

The entire report on the expedition can be read here http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Report:_Disaster_at_Ionith

And that is why Griffins are part of the Solar empire.

They come from the FiM Akavar.

From a land over the show, according to the maps provided.

Equestria is an analogy to the US as the Griffon Kingdom is analogous to Europe. Just an idea.

I don't think so.  While there were Griffons competing in the Equestria Games, non were in the top box.  I think most of the Griffons we've seen are part of a settlement that is part of Equestria and the don't fall under the juristiction of the Griffon Kingdom.

That's a keen observation; It should be obvious that the griffons in the Equestria games must have represented a griffon settlement - they were a griffon-only team flying in an event in which cities or towns compete with one another. Maybe there's indeed a town from which Griffons considered Equestrian citizens hail.

They come from the East according to the map. Research shows that Griffin mythology goes all the way back to ancient Middle Eastern and North African civilizations. They are known for guarding precious items, so I could imagine them coming from a rich Middle Eastern-style country, similar to how Pegasus culture is modeled on Sparta and Rome.
