Well I actually started reading some fanfics and I did come across a couple that where ok, I still haven't read a whole lot but I actually found that I kinda enjoyed this one, its a TwiShy Fanfic and involves them already being married just as a warning, but its not a dark thing, it's actually pretty good I think though, its called "Northern Lights" its not done yet, but so far it has been enjoyable for me to read .

I didn't read much fanfiction because i'm new to the fandom but from the few i read my favorite is : Vinyl and Octavia: University Days by DawnFade. I'm not a big fan of clopfics but i am a fan of shipping stories, this one was so sweet that i was like awwww all the time. I also read the extra part and i regret it but at least i know that is not something for me .

My favorite would have to be 'The Amazingly Awesome Tank the Tortoise by R. Dash'.  I think it gives Dashie some amazing characterization while staying true to the series and the ending is just spectacular!

 

Other favorites would have to be the Dear series (Dear Sweetie Belle, Dear Applebloom, etc).  While I don't exactly find that they work given the real timeline of the show per se (unless the mane 6 are like in their 30's).  I find that they are enjoyable to read and provide great alternate interpretations of the characters while still staying in a realm that it is believable.

 

I would highly recommend any of these to those who haven't read them yet!

I entirely agree with you on My Little Dashie I have different favorites for different subjects ( still looking for a good love story involving a human) but this story is one of the first in a long time to surpass my ego and shatter my heart but I was very happy when someone wrote a part two that made it all better

Thoughts: Surprisingly, this is not a brony in Equestria story even though bronydom is a thing in-universe. Our protagonist knows of the show because his cousins watch it but hasn't seen it himself, knowing he's been thrown into a cartoon but not having the advantage having seen it would provide. Also of note is the fact that this takes place before A Canterlot Wedding which is important to understand why the ponies of Vanhoover respond to him the way they do. As for the quality, I don't have much to say. It's a competent execution of the premise without any major faults (so far). If the description intrigues you, check it out.*

 

*This fan fiction can only be found here. But it doesn't matter. When I said it's without major faults so far, that has since changed. The story has gone far sideways of anything interesting and I don't think I can recommend it anymore.

Oh boy, where to start.

 

Life Scoots and Then you Die

Oh boy, an SS&E comedy. If you don't know, SS&E, or otherwise known as Shortskirtsandexplosions, wrote Background Pony, a famous fanfiction, and writes comedies that are...I...just read one of the fanficitons. SS&E's comedies are...crazy.

 

So, anyway, Luna constantly visits Scootaloo in her dreams forcing her to do the craziest things. And at the end, Scootaloo gets eaten by a sea serpent. Mere words cannot express this trainwreck of a story.

 

The Immortal Game (Ponies make War)

My all-time favorite fanficiton. Twilight and Rainbow Dash get mind controlled, and while Evil- Twilight (Known as Nithilus) attempts to take over the world. After an epic series, right when you think it is over, the author pulls a fast one on you and introduces the MAIN conflict. Yes, Twi and Rainbow Dash attempting to take over the world and transforming the elements into dark versions of themselves isn't even the main conflict. The mane 6 get into a bloody conflict with Celestia and Luna's father, and Rarity's father, who is a general in the army for Titan and Terra (Celestia and Luna's Mother and Father).

 

At one point, Discord gets into the fray.

 

Twilight Sparkle gets a Free Salad

From the author that brought you the Immortal Game, here is a trainwreck of a comedy that SS&E would be proud of.

 

Twilight Sparkle attempts to get a free salad, but goes in jail for attempting to steal a salad. She attempts to break out while proposing an allience to the leader of the frogs (Who is terror) and wearing a ninja catmare spysuit.

 

Oh, and Celestia makes the best quote ever at the end.

 

And it's over 10,000 words long. 10,000 words of getting a free salad.

I'm a fan of horrorfics, my favorite being cupcakes. rainbow factory was too much of a thriller than a horrorfic. i never got through patty cakes because it started going in a very wrong direction and i quit midway through. i wrote a horrorfic myself called stare, it's dedicated to fluttershy and there's a surprise twist at the end.

Some recommended fanfictions you've maybe possibly never heard of.

 

In descending order of awesome.

Very, oh-so 1. The Secret Life Of Rarity, complete with it's two sequels.

     The stories are extremely gory at times, that's why there's the gore label. I'm going to be honest, the premise isn't too interesting. The premise basically sums up to "What if Rarity was a serial killer?" This isn't just all violence, though. The insight into the mind of a serial killer makes this story a great read, as the twisted morals mixed with the visceral gore and Sweetie Belle's place in the story, makes it an engrossing and engaging story in my mind. The sequels might even be better than the original, though. The sequels have much, much less gore, and more philisophical. The sequels revolve around Sweetie Belle and her daughter, respectively, as they endure the fallout of Rarity's past.

Stories:

     The Secret Life of Rarity

     The Public Life of Sweetie Belle

     Broken Blossom

TL/DR:

     Rarity becomes the most engrossing serial killer since Jack the Ripper.

 

2. The TDverse (or non-bronyverse as TVTropes calls it).

     By the same writer as The Secret Life Of Rarity, this is possibly the best Human-Insert i've ever read. I'm serious. This could rival "Through The Eyes of Another Pony". The only difference between the former and the latter is that the latter is a brony. The former is an avid non-brony. You can imagine the hilarity that ensues as the story goes on.

     Just to give an idea of the kind of comedy in this story, one of the first things that happens after Equestria is introduced is Celestia getting punched in the FREAKING FACE. YEAH. THE FACE.

     No, I am NOT a brony, GET ME OUTTA EQUESTRIA!!!

     Wanderings of A Non-Brony

     Breaking of A Non-Brony (spinoff, darker)

     TD's Little Rarity (The best MLD-style of story i've read besides MLD)

TL/DR: One of the best self-inserts ever.

 

3. The newest addition to the list, A Puppet To Her Fame.

     I found this today on the FiMFiction front page, and holy balls this story is good. A blissfully sad story of Octavia's rise to stardom. There's only one chapter (albeit a long one), and the writing is truly phenomenal. The amount of cruelty in this chapter alone is just rediculous, and there are no words to describe the direction Kaidan has taken this otherwise happy show. It's still Equestria, but it's not a dark Equestria. It's only Octavia's life that's dark.

TL/DR: A dark story of Octavia's childhood and her rise to stardom.
