Have you used the Pony Creator? What do you think of it?

I quite like it, because I can't draw for shit. Music is my outlet, baby :P

Also, I don't know anybody who'd wanna draw anything for me, and I don't have the mponey to go asking professionals to do it, so...

*shrugs*

point me to an alternative if you can ;)

I think it's great for those poor bronies who can't draw an equine for bits like me. Unfortunately, Pony Maker gets abused from either overzealous bronies or from people just trying to make something as wacky as possible. When used by somebody that knows what they want and has restraint, it can be very effective:

I've never seen such an amout of awful things coming out of something, it is an abomination, a spawn of satan, a tool to make the horrible come to life, it should be damned to the deepest dungeon, to the highest mountain, to the most disgusting of slums.

I use Pony Creator a lot because I can't draw at all. I have a really hard time getting the ponies I draw to look like... well, ponies. However, this gives me a good starting point with which I can work later. I don't know much about what OCs others create with it ,I have seen some which I really disliked, but for me Pony Creator is immensely useful.

I rather like it. As stated, it's good for people who have no artistic ability to show people their OCs or simply just make avatars. Alternatively, it can help someone to envision and create their OC. Some people may be limited by their own imaginations, especially those who aren't particularly skilled in design, so Pony Maker, with all its options, can assist people in designing their characters by laying out all the options available to them.

I, personally, think that I do have some artistic ability, but that sort of ends at humans. Though the style is simplistic, I can't draw ponies. I suck hard at it. Just look at my profile pic. It looks like shit. So even if someone does have artistic ability, it doesn't mean that they'll be able to draw ponies, which is another good use for Pony Maker.

Additionally, some people may not want a picture that looks hand drawn. Some people want a pic done in vectors, but have no ability with vectors.

I think it would be good if you could change the angle, though. Having a character viewed only from the side. I feel like the maker would be a lot better if the images were in 3/4 position rather than in profile. It's a bit more natural-looking.

Additionally, some of the layers aren't prioritized correctly. (I don't know if those are actual terms, so sorry for my crappy explanation.) What I mean by that is that things that should go in front are put behind things that should go behind, sometimes. For example, my OC has wings and hair that goes over the left shoulder. However, when I choose this mane style, it puts the hair behind the other shoulder. So if I want it to look how I want, I have to edit it myself in a graphics program. My pony also has glasses, and the way they're done seems to make them go through the hair, and it looks a bit awkward.

I won't say that Pony Maker is, like, the best thing ever, because it does have its flaws. But for those of us who are unable to draw/render our OCs for whatever reason, it's a helpful resource.

Boring, lack of creativity, and two-dimensional. I would trash it if it was me, because you should make your own OC. It isn't supposed to be bound to such a small array of mane and tail styles, eyes, anything. Make one yourself from scratch.

Don't be a lazy bum.

Okay, I am going to consider what I say very carefully as my immediate reaction to reading that is best not written down.

Who are you to tell me how I do things? I cannot draw, I lack that ability. This is NOT from lack of trying, I took lessons and classes and I failed rather badly at them. I don't mope about it, but it is a very sore point for me as I am rather proud of my ideas and it frustrates the hell out of me that I cannot show them to people.

Don't be condensing and arrogant.

The Pony maker is a cute little toy and very helpful to those of us who cannot draw. I don't feel comfortable just asking folks to draw stuff for me (unless they offer) and was happy to use my Pony Creator OC as my avatar until SkullGal very kindly drew him for me. Thinking ill of people for using the Pony Creator is elitist, pure and simple.

I get why some folks hate it. I also agree that proper art is a hell of a lot better and some folks do create daft OC's. So what? Each to their own.

If you hate the damn thing, YOU AREN'T ONE OF THE PEOPLE WHO NEED IT!

Pony-Creator makes your OC's appearance 5x worse than a properly drawn out one regardless of the artist's skill.

I disagree with this. Compare:

I'm not even gonna try to defend my work. What I drew looks like crap. And I don't think I'm a bad artist. I just can't draw ponies for crap. These are the kind of people that Pony Creator was made for. Is it the best thing ever? No. But it sure it a hell of a lot better than what I tried to draw. Not any artist's work is gonna be better than Pony Creator.

Still has its flaws. One of the reason isn't just how people are using it, but it's limitations.

What if you wanted an OC with a mane or tail style not on the pony creator? Some OCs have two colored manes and tails, but some of them might be styled a different way than on the pony creator. Even more, what if that OC had a three, or even four, colored mane and tail?

The other things are features. It's a side view, so you can't show most of the body as intended, only 50%. What if your OC had one blind eye? (Yes, it's possible in OCs and real life.) Or heterochromia? Or he or she is wearing an eye patch?

Some OCs also have trademark clothing, be that a fedora or a tuxedo or a beret. The Pony Creator doesn't offer that.

So not only is it low on creativity, it also offers a poor example of the OCs true form. Along with people using it to make their Mary Sue dragon eyed broken horn tall alicorn OC.

You miss my point. The generator is there for people who cannot draw, just want to create a base to work from or folks who just want to monkey around with it. I have no problem with your opinion on the Pony Maker itself, but slagging off the people who use it gets my ire.

So what if people use it to create Sues? It might not be the best thing, but who are they hurting? When was the great Sue Ban and who enforces it?

If a Sue invites your opinion, get right into it by all means. If they don't, exactly what business is it of yours?

The whole point of it is to help people who cannot draw and/or cannot get someone else to do it.

I don't use it that often but I suppose it's okay.

I only use it to see which color schemes go well together.

I would only give it a 5/10 at the most.

The manes+tails available are kind of boring looking and the designs of the characters aren't the best either, but for what it is....it's okay.

It's just a typical overused OC creator. I understand that people can't draw, but I wish there was more options so we can end the cliche OCs that are all over the place.

Let's not forget that it can sometimes be a lazy excuse for people who are actually good at drawing.

I use it on occasion. I don't see why so many people hate it. Hate the player, not the game.

I've made a couple OCs with it, but it was mainly for threads like "What would the pony version of you look like" or other similar thread types on forums.Which is also why none of my OCs have names. Also why I don't have any sort of OC on my profile.

I use it because

1: I don't draw,I don't have the patience to draw.

2: It's not worth paying someone to draw an OC I made up that I'm just going to use for one or two threads, when that's all I create OCs for.  i.e.disposable OCs

3: I don't really RP.(on the rare occassion I do, if someone asks me)

It serves it's purpose....

I can't draw for crap; I have some decent sketches of my OC Pluse but I failed at her mane and her body shape though her head was fine. I don't think it's really fair to say that people cannot express their creativity through it for those of us who aren't good at visual art. If you want a really great work of your OC, then practice drawing until you're good enough or do a trace and colour it yourself. Most people don't care that much, though, because unless you're incredibly fond of your OC's there's no use for art. I'm personally more concerned about people that make them demon-killing immortals with super fast healing and an edgy backstory than some average or poor art.

So, overall, 6-7/10.

Ponies are not supposed to look like stick figures. Therefore, I am in favor. They could add bunches more options, and that would make it easier to allow for a wider variety in which to make the pony your own. Also, it's probably more aimed for the kiddos than for bronies. I think it's nice that it exists.

It's just a little toy for someone who knows at least a little how to draw. My short experience with it was limited to playing with manes and tails styles, and the color combinations. But I didn't use it for any of my drawings
Its main flaw is too many strange optional features like in e.g. nonpony horns, wings or eyes, wich give ability to create a real abomination.

It's fine for someone with lack of drawing skills to make quick visualization of their OC. But if someone is really unskilled in art, then shouldn't make any and submit it on internet. If someone want to learn how to draw then should try to hand trace images from this creator or from images of other artists. There's also so many free vector pony bases.

The more practical tool for artists would be a 3D pony creator (with only basic variables), to help with drawing some difficult and strange poses.

It can be useful to some extent. I use it sometimes, but it has a limited amount of manes and tails, and I want that to be original. For example, one of my Ocs was made on the pony creator, and it became my new oc. Because of the unoriginal hairstyle, though, I tweaked it when I drew it. My other oc was also made with the PC and I kept the mane, because I liked it. How much you like the pony creator just depends on how much time you want to spend on your oc. For me, the pony creator can be nice for the basic idea of my oc but I would tweak it a little before I made it my official oc. In all, I think it's a pretty good website for anyone who wants an idea of what they want their pony to look like.

On the flipside, it can be a bad website because it produces a lot of strange ocs, but is it really the website's fault? Some of the options are far from what a normal pony would look like, and as a result, bad OCs are often created using it. It can either look like this:

tumblr_muxqbk80Hd1rslj06o1_500.png

or this:

tumblr_muxqbk80Hd1rslj06o2_400.png

5 1/2 out of 10 or

7/10, because it depends.

It looks like cheap crap and it's overused. Really, if you want to ponify something, actually try drawing instead of using Ponymaker, or else it'll look like crap.

Really in all I hate it's designs

Not everyone is an artistic genius and I think it is very good for people who can't draw their own stuff. Who cares if you think its unoriginal or uncool, you should stop being so judgmental / stuck up and care about the pony, not their avatar. img-1932487-1-wink.png

My talent is creative writing, NOT graphics. I'll use the OC creator to get and idea of what I want. I'll rate the OC gen. a solid 5/10

Pony Creator's a neat little tool for those who aren't particularly stellar at drawing to bring their visions of their OCs to life, and to that end, I'm fine with it. It's those who abuse this tool and spam up their deviantart galleries with PC pics who irritate me, since sites like that are meant for art that YOU made, not a computer.

My only other complaints with PC would be the generic look of the bases (not to mention a very limited number of dynamic poses) and a tendency to promote the creation of over-the-top designs that many would consider - if I am to use the taboo term - Mary-Sue-ish.

Overall, I'd say to use it if you can't draw, but I'd still encourage those who can at least "kinda/sorta/somewhat" draw ponies to just hand-draw them instead of using PC - no matter how the drawing turns out, it always has, IMO, far more character than anything built off of generic bases. And @Clover Heart, your drawing is no exception. I see lots of character in your style, even if it isn't yet quite as polished as you'd like. :)

wow no love on this one...

Personally I find it fun to mess with the different styles of tails/manes/colors/bodies , just like I find it fun to mess with doll dress up sites(although it's been awhile since I've done it)

Eventually I'll get around to trying to draw the OC in my avatar but for now I don't see any reason why the pony creator version is bad. But honestly my drawing skills aren't that great. At best they are okay/medium.

Before this avatar I had a screenshot of Royal Ribbon but I figured an OC would be more personalized then a screenshot of a pony I like.

I think OC generators are useful for both people who can/not draw,

For those who don't draw much you can create an OC that covers the basics: size, pony type, gender type, basic coat & mane colour and even cutie mark. More than enough for someone to work off.

For those with talent. It's a great way to build a chassis to expand on from there, with more detail, more dynamic poses and other unique flourishes they can add as wanted or needed.
