I would say no, Despite the ending of the episode being phenomenal and Diomand's solo song was heartwarming, the episode entirely wasn't good because of the cliche reason behind DT's attitude, and the minor issues not fully being satisfying. Also it wasn't well paced like the other episodes and too rushed because of the mini problems being smashed together

So, here's a question. If they hadn't had starlight sneaking around this season, or if they did her return episode in the middle of the season,

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNND it wasn't for the fact that it was precisely the fifth anniversary  of FiM, yes, Magical Mystery Cure: CMC edition would have worked just fine as the S5 finale

I say no. As much as I liked the episode, it shouldn't be a finale simply because it didn't feature the mane six. The CMC are cute but they aren't the focus of the show, so it would have been an odd episode for a season finale.

Honestly, I feel like this episode was handled about as well as "Magical Mystery Cure," which is, if you ask me, not very well at all. Another musical episode that goes way too light on plot and character to really count as a full episode. That said, the ending did get me to cry profusely. I think that it could work as a season finale just because, as others have said here, there is a definite feeling of finality to it, and I'm not sure how they can follow something this big, even if the rest of the episode was so rushed. But I suppose all we can really do at this point is just trust that the studio have a plan for the actual finale that will fit better, even though I feel like they've kind of written themselves into a corner ever since season three.

Totally!

I mean if you think about it the season three finale was very, very similar to this episode.

If you think about it:

  • There were a large amount of musical numbers.
  • There was a significant problem to be solved.
  • The way the problem was solved helped cause the dynamic change in the series.
  • There was a dynamic change in the series, that's big enough to cause butthurt fans.

I personally loved the episode, and the character development for DT was unexpected. The epiphany that the CMC discovered about their selves was also unexpected too me.

Provided that they wrapped up Starlight Glimmer arc in the penultimate episode, yes I would have been very much ok with this as a finale for Season 5. @Dark Qiviut created a topic that asked if we would prefer a slice of life finale to this season instead of 'epic big bad' type of episode and I completely am of the mind that I really really want a simple finale again. This would have actually fit the bill as both epic, and slice of life. It permanently alters the status quo but still retains an intimate look at interpersonal relationship with some great morals too boot. Plus I have a feeling that while I may enjoy the upcoming finale, it will not top Lost Mark. Closing out a season with a CMC episode would be pretty ballsy too.

Anyways, weighing in myself: I would have accepted it as a finale for this season, and ONLY this season. Specifically, this episode would work as a finale for this season because of the cutie mark theme. I feel that this episode syncs up well with what cutie marks mean, and thus works as an ending piece to the season.

If it was any other season BUT this season, I'd emphatically say NO, as I want a huge, giant adventure episode for a finale, and I would be dissapointed if there wasn't a big magical girl adventure episode (because I'm really, REALLY starved for the big adventure episodes in this show and wish we'd get more XD). But for this one, yes, I'd have loved it as a finale.

No, just because we waited far too long to end on episode 18. >_>

That said, I loved the episode.

Well, I would assume in a case of this being a finale, it'd have been shown at the end, not in the middle ;p
