Why does AppleJack own pigs?

This is a thought that occured to me a couple of days after watching the episode AppleJack's Day Off. In that episode we see she has pigs and chickens. The chickens make sense because you can get eggs from chickens. But pigs are the only farm animal that is only useful, at least to a farmer, after it is dead. So the question is If pigs are only good for eating why does AJ have a pen full of them?

Pigs are also excellent ways to clear new land. They eat *everything*, including the roots. So if your fields are being consumed with invasive weeds, you use pigs.

Joking aside, I'm not quite sure. I haven't seen Applejack's Day Off yet, but the pigs don't seem to talk (unlike the sheep and the cows) so maybe they're just cared for the same way that squirrels, birds and bunnies are.

 

The truffle hunting idea brought up by @@Nightmare Muffin actually seems like a really neat idea that's worth exploring in a fanfic.
