Why do people call a season bad before it's over?

Only not, cause it's still going on. I don't know if it's a fandom thing or maybe it's just too many opinions, but I keep getting the whole "this season sucks." Or "gah,they totally ruined the Fluttershy episode.

 

Sure I get it, some episodes are hit and miss. That's fine, there are episodes I don't like watching(like all the spike episodes, mainly because they make him look dumb af all the time). But to call a whole season a failure is going a bit far.

 

I know I heavily criticise some episodes, but it doesn't stop me from watching. I just want to know why everyone calls a season dumb or bad and then turn around and recall it as the better season.

Well, thing all fandoms have in common, is that a new season underperforms, it's qualified as bad. Yeah, sure, this first half season was kinda underwhelming in general, but it was still good

Bleh, Zephyr Breeze, Smephyr Breeze. Flutter Brutter had the best and a much need portrayal of Fluttershy for the longest time, addressing one of my biggest issues with her for a while. Hell as a nice bonus it also had a great Rainbow Dash, which was also much needed after she got royally screwed in Newbie Dash. Those two are enough for the episode to be on my good list regardless of a shitty family member and 3rd act

 

I'll admit I haven't been liking this season much so far(praying that the second half is much better), but whether someone likes the season or not should be up to them and them alone. That said, when half the season is over, usually a good amount of episodes have passed for them to know where the season sits with them so far, especially when we have a season(S3) that only contain half of what one would normally contain

Somehow, /mlp/ is one of the most rational places this season when it comes to actually discussing the show (sadly they don't do that very much)

Derpibooru is weird... in that reading their S6 thread you would think they hate it but when they had a thread asking "how do you feel about the season so far" most of those same people.... were surprisingly positive.

See I disagree with you on the season as a whole but im 100% agreement on Flutter Brutter, I have no idea how I am seeing some people naming it as one of the worst episodes of THE ENTIRE SERIES just because they don't like a character that's not really meant to be liked. For me it was quite literally the first time I actually really CARED about Fluttershy and her story in freaking years, it was a completely positive surprise for me. It's easily in my top 3 of the season and in my top 3 Fluttershy episodes overall.

I wouldn't call this season amazing (so far, it would be in the middle of the road on how I would rank the seasons), but I wouldn't call this season horrible. Sure, there have been a couple of questionable moments so far this season, but some people really blow those out of proportions. Take Flutter Brutter for instance. Sure, Zephyr Breeze is quite the intolerant asshole, but that's one aspect of the episode. It's sort of like messing up one step in an otherwise good cooking of a recipe. Sure it's a problem that's jarring, but it shouldn't just instantly blow everything else good out of existence. It's no need to call it one of the worst episodes of the show. There were good moments in that episode, such as Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy's characterization and Fluttershy for once not forgetting everything she learned. 

 

Okay I used one example but hey, the other episodes have been mediocre at worst.

Still better than season 1... Season 1 I would consider to be the worst season, though at the same time I wouldn't consider it bad either.

 

Also, this season was the first to actually have a decent Spike episode.

OK, let me address some commonly things discussed that rates the season:

-The Crystalling: Sure, it's one of the most underwhelming season openers, but it was a good episode

-On your Marks, Gift for Maud Pie, and Applejack's Day Off aren't bad episodes, just mundane and pretty S1ish

-Saddle Row Review, Flutterbrutter, Newbie Dash and Spice Up your Life are high tier episodes this season

-Gauntlet of Fire is a contender of one of the top episodes in the show

 

Flutter Brutter and Newbie Dash are highly criticized episodes, Zephyr for the former, and the name calling for the latter. I think the criticism is highly misplaced  in both. The former, the episode made VERY clear you shouldn't take Zephyr's side, not to mention a highly needed Fluttershy showing her previous development which usually hits the reset button. The later.... to put it short: name calling is not only for her, Dashie didn't try to address the issue if it bothered her so much and instead she got in trouble in a poor attempt to get rid of it, they called her nickname with no ill intent shortly after, they've told her every Wonderbolt passed BEFORE the episode's end

There's been hit and miss, and I think this season has been a bit rockier than others, but I wouldn't say it's horrid.  Not at all.  I'm in the club that is critical of Newbie and Brutter, and I hate the existence of Flurry Heart for biased, personal reasons, but other than that, it's been fine.  Saddle Row and Spice were fantastic, as was The Goblet of Fire.     No, I still have high hopes for things to come.  Don't worry, mate; even when we're critical, we're not all gloom and doom.

Meh, people feel how they want. I've mostly enjoyed the season, aside from a few duds, but most of it hasn't been terrible in my opinion.

New incarnations of things will always get criticized in the present, if only because it's not identical to what attracted fans in the first place. I find it hard to believe the quality is so drastically different from previous seasons as some people are saying, but of course everyone is allowed their own opinion. Personally I've enjoyed S6 a lot

Yeah, I guess season 6 so far hasn't been really on tier with previous seasons, but hey, it's not like it's worst thing in the world, like how everyone acts like it is. Besides, we still have the second half of season 6 to watch before we can make a verdict. Also, after the disappointment season 3 was, i don't think anything during this season will come close to being as bad as that.

Only half of the season has aired so far, and I think that some judgement of the season is warranted based on it.

Personally I enjoyed it so far, but it hasn't been anything amazing or anything.

I am hoping that it picks up in the second half.

At this point, it's going to take a whole lot of quality episodes in the second half for my opinion on season 6 to improve. When season 5 went on hiatus last year, it had far less crap episodes and far more quality episodes under its belt. In my opinion, the crap has ultimately outweighed the quality this season. 

 

At least I do have some faith that it can be turned around.

Sure, it's always kinda bold to have bad episodes in seasons sometimes, but.. Like, I like the show for what it is. It would be weird to have a show going through seasons and seasons without having some "meh" episodes time and again. Please do tell me if anyone's ever stumbled through a LONG show that haven't had their badly written episodes? There always are some episodes.

Plus, some people might not think alike. I might find an episode slightly more boring than the other while someone else loves that specific episode. W/e.

Anyway, what I really wanted to say was: I love the show and no matter what episode it is, I won't be upset over how it was. I usually just enjoy having another, brand new episode of a show that I enjoy very much. Simple as cake.

I for one am loving this season so far. The only thing working against it is a lack of plot, which is ok with me because I'm happy to have a season were we can just enjoy the characters, plus it's a nice change of pace from the usual season format, which is probably what the show staff were going for. I am perfect fine with slice of life episodes. Sure, the season 6 premiere is a tad disappointing as it definitely fails to live up to most other two parters, and Applebuck season is a poor interpretation of Applejack's character, but I've enjoyed all the other episodes so far. The Gauntlet of Fire is easily my favourite of the season, and I do think we should get more exploration of Equestria since that's kind of what was promised, but at least the map is back. Sure, it's in line with what we got last season, but it's a great way to pair off different characters in the mane six. All in all, I enjoyed the first half of the season and am looking forward to the second.

This reaction from the fandom happens literally every season (I've been watching the show for only 1 year and I know this). People say it's underwhelming and that the "show is going through seasonal rot!!!", then they change their minds once the season actually ends. People just need to stop being so close minded and jumping to conclusions. Watch the whole season before having an overall opinion on the show's current state of quality, god dammit.

 

I admit season 6's first half has some meh episodes (Applejack's Day Off, The Crystalling, Gift of Maud Pie, etc) but people seem to forget all the good things a season does. No Second Prances, Flutter Brutter, Gauntlet of Fire, and Saddle Row Review were great episodes. No Second Prances was able to bring back a character we haven't seen in ages (Trixie obv), have great interactions with Starlight, have them both learn a good lesson, and develop both of them. Flutter Brutter showed tremendous character growth for Fluttershy, as well as finally showing her family. Gauntlet of Fire was easily one of the best Spike episodes in the series, which is a HUGE milestone. Saddle Row Review was possibly one of the funniest episodes in the show. The episodes have flaws but they were still good nonetheless.

 

My only big complaint about this season is that there's no real plot thread, but other than that it's been pretty good so far. Not the best and it could be better, but it's pretty good. Keep in mind that we still have 14 episodes left of the season, that's more episodes than we already got at this point. There's still a lot to go.

Losing confidence is natural. I may not agree that the season is bad, but I can understand why people give up on a season.
