Are you for or against hacker group Anonymous

What are your guys opinion on the hacker group Anonymous? They are a hacktavist group (without any real leader (in fact, they don't have a leader at all)), they fight for the freedom of information, and for the freedom of the information (of any kind) getting on the Internet for everyone to see...So what is your opinion?

Sorry guys, this is the best I can come up with as a random question, it has been three years since I talked to anybody on any forum...

Indifferent. Seems the group has been tied to good and bad things.

Apparently anonymous took over some EA forums a few years ago. It was amusing, to say the least.

Early work, meh. Some of it was funny at the time (the raids on sites), then I got more mature and realized those people shouldn't have been attacked (at least, some of them).

Now, I just don't really give a crap about them.

I don't know, their actions and behaviour is confusing, sometimes they do good, other times they cause harm, to the portions of the public they seem to support. The problem with Anonymous is the lack of central oversight, which means anyone can use Anonymous to go after the very people, who defend rights or uphold the law, the next big problem is the lack of neutrality, sometimes they attack only right wing, or only left wing sites, instead of both at the same time, it appears that there is a preference to support one, when the time is convenient, moreover, they seem to be more of a nuisance to the public, instead of the government or big business.

Anonymous is not a group. There are simply groups and individuals that use the name as a cover for their acts to make themselves more influential. One Anonymous "member" might be a 13-year-old using a voice changer on Call of Duty. One Anonymous "member" might be a bored Google employee that wants to hack into Scientology's computer networks. Another Anonymous "member" might be a serious civil rights activist that wants to see some positive change in the world.

The idea of having a name that you can pick up and put down to gain influence kind of reminds me of the Gray Cowl of Nocturnal from the Elder Scrolls games. Have your personal identity stripped to gain infamy and anonymity that you can use to load off your doing on an enigmatic legend.

In short, Anonymous does not exist. It is merely a mask to be put on by anyone to hide their identity.

I don't know...ANY information. That can be pretty dangerous, but it can be used for good. I'm not sure.

My thoughts in a nutshell. Anonymous is simply that, anonymous. You have no discernable identity. You could be anyone, anywhere in the world. It protects you from action against others... This is a double edged sword. Anonymity prevents the good guys from being picked out by tyrannical people... However, it also makes it harder for the bad guys to be picked out too.

The biggest thing they're doing right now seems to be searching for and exposing dark government secrets to expose the NWO (New World Order) and the corruption of the global elites. They're clearly being conspiracy theorists right now, but maybe they're being accurate about the truth. I'm not very active in politics, so don't trust my opinions about things

I have 1 criticism about them though; they preach that the media is a brainwashing machine and yet they have many Youtube channels preaching against the NWO. It's borderline brainwashing. I can't recall their exact explanation, but they claim that everyone but the elites are slaves, working to pay taxes to a corrupt government that steals people's money or something. I really need to relisten to their theory again

Given their past history of hackivsim for freedom and protection of people, I consider them a good movement (is this at all the best choice of words to describe what they are?)

So that means I mustn't let my recipe for cheese dogs get into the wrong hands.  :-o

Lest the cheese dog revolution be upon us.

It's hard to form a coherent opinion of a group which itself has no coherency.  As you mentioned yourself, they have no structure, no organisation, no membership, no leadership and no accountability.  It's like a franchise operation with no actual license holder.  It's a bit like asking what I think about bullets, I'm not really for or against bullets, however, I may be for or against the specific purpose for which any individual bullet is being used.

I'm leaning towards being in favor of them. Having a group that doesn't answer to any government or criminal organization use their power to affect change is inspiring.

If you want more, there is a documentary about it.

The problem with this is, due the anonymous nature of the group you have absolutely no idea who or what is behind any of the actions being carried out in their name.  I'm pretty sure you'll find plenty of CIA, NSA, GCHQ, FSB etc. in there along with everyone else.

A more accurate description of anonymous then would be as a tool, to be used by and against others.

Essentially yes, it's no different to a ski mask.  Anyone can wear a ski mask, the ski mask itself is meaningless beyond being an item behind which you can hide.  What is important is the actions you carry out whilst hiding behind your ski mask,  some people might hide behind the mask to fight crime (yay!), others might hide behind the mask to mug old ladies for the change in their purse (boo!).

Good or bad though, it is encouraging that it's not something that can be controlled by one group or organization. You may have the few members which have their ties, but for the most part it takes a group consensus by members across the globe to take effect. It is 'power to the people.' What is done with that power being any good or bad is up to interpretation.

Tacitly against. They have zero accountability to their actions. They also appeal to rebels and anarchists. To oversimplify: I'm lawful they're chaotic.

nice try Anonymous

as for my opinion i think they're idiotic for the most part however their heart is in the right place similar to 4chan they're chaotic trolls but they will fight for the good of people and turn to vigilantism to catch criminals

an example is when iran was killing gays Anon hacked the controls to one of Iran's nuclear power plants and shut them off for like 10 seconds and said "you keep killing gay's and we'll make the plant explode" the killings stopped almost immediately for a while
